  • 00:00

At this point in my Youtube knife video art career I’ve talked my fair share of shit,

  • 00:05

made a lot of videos and I still can’t stop with bad purchasing decisions.

  • 00:09

And at this point in 2019, you might want list of my favorite knives.

  • 00:13

It’s not about what works well for others, it’s about what I like and I half assed-ly

  • 00:17

attempt to explain why I like it.

  • 00:20

When I look for an every day carry my ideal knife needs to hit a few areas.

  • 00:25

    1.

  • 00:26

the blade is over 3 inches- but not much larger than 4.

  • 00:30

Second it needs it needs to be around 4 ounces or less in weight.

  • 00:34

Third it needs to Have a decent sized ergonomic grip around 3.5 inches.. and maybe lastly

  • 00:41

    a pocket clip.

  • 00:43

If a knife is great or cool or compliments my patchy beard as manly, I will bend my rules…

  • 00:51

but what you’ll find here are my favorite general purpose blades.

  • 00:55

Sorry there aren’t any super budget knives here, but I don’t want knife guys to think

  • 01:04

I’m poor or that I feed my children properly.

  • 01:06

So what are 10 pocket knives I can’t give up and why, unless they’re confiscated.

  • 01:11

I don’t know if these are in any particular order, they might be, but they also might

  • 01:15

    not be.

  • 01:16

I’m kind of a disorganized mess.

  • 01:17

First up the knife that started it, all.

  • 01:18

    1.

  • 01:19

    The Spyderco Endura 4.

  • 01:20

A lot has changed in the steel and knife world since 2012 when I bought this.

  • 01:24

Before getting a mans pocket knife I had a Leatherman PST multitool in my pocket or on

  • 01:28

my belt in my bid to stay celibate into my early 20’s.

  • 01:33

I bought the PST for film school, which was my worst spending decision of all time until

  • 01:37

nearly 2 decades later I spent $455 on a pocket knife.

  • 01:39

But I bought the Endura to compliment my multitool, by that I mean I wanted a larger blade.

  • 01:46

The blade of the Endura is made from a flat ground VG-10.

  • 01:49

While VG-10 is still a decent steel, a lot knife bros would rather fart in it’s general

  • 01:57

    direction.

  • 01:58

If a person wanted a good knife… and maybe wasn’t concerned about fancy new locks that

  • 02:02

are fun to fidget with or more modern super steels, but they wanted something well built,

  • 02:08

reliable, and easy to sharpen on Spydercos Sharpmaker system, this would be a great knife.

  • 02:14

I think it’s well worth the $70 now that they charge for it.

  • 02:18

The Endura 4 is very light, thin in the pocket, has a large comfortable handle, and comes

  • 02:23

very very sharp out of the box.

  • 02:24

Check out the full Endura 4 review I did, for more information.

  • 02:28

    2.

  • 02:29

    The Benchmade Fact.

  • 02:30

Early Last year Benchmade sent me one of their Facts to do a review on.

  • 02:32

They liked that video so much they haven’t returned any of my DMs since I posted my review.

  • 02:38

For standard humans being ghosted by a hot piece of tail makes you real sad, for influencers

  • 02:44

it’s like that but with corporations instead of people.

  • 02:50

The Benchmade Fact, I wouldn’t call some sort of hard use military style knife, although

  • 02:55

it plays one in dress up.

  • 02:57

It has a long handle, a needle like thin pointy blade, and a fast one handed deployment and

  • 03:02

    closing.

  • 03:03

It doesn’t feel big in the pocket, and I think it looks cool as shit.

  • 03:07

The s30v steel was the standard super steel for a while, I mean now people don’t think

  • 03:11

so, but it still works for me.

  • 03:14

What does it do well, that other knives don’t?

  • 03:17

    Hmm?

  • 03:18

I think the pointy tip works well for removing threads from tags on clothing.

  • 03:23

So that seems a great reason.

  • 03:25

For medium to light use every day carry, this is a great choice, but kind of expensive at

  • 03:32

    $178.

  • 03:33

    3.

  • 03:34

    The Laconico Keen.

  • 03:35

(La-conico) Every collection needs one beautiful purple knife.

  • 03:38

It’s the color of opulence, taste, and of kings.

  • 03:42

If you don’t agree that purple is the most Lucious, fanciful color- then it comes in

  • 03:45

a few other boring ones too.

  • 03:47

I mean that is if you could get it- it’s a massdrop knife- and it might roll around

  • 03:51

again soon, but in the meantime sign up for massdrop- so you can test out that email filter

  • 03:57

    you just set up.

  • 03:58

At a hair over 4 ounces, with a s35vn blade, and titanium handle- it checks all the feature

  • 04:04

boxes for high MSRP loving knifesnobs falthough at only $140 it means that it’s still relatively

  • 04:11

affordable for an occasional use piece of man jewelry.

  • 04:16

It uses a flipper for deployment, so it’s fun

  • 04:23

to fidget with and I guess uhh use if it comes to that.

  • 04:29

    4.

  • 04:31

    The Spyderco Para Military 2.

  • 04:33

Now I’d by lying if I said I still carry the Endura often.

  • 04:36

There’s nothing wrong with the Endura, other than it’s what poorer people would buy.

  • 04:41

Like not that poor, you still have to be in a place where you could rationalize purchasing

  • 04:45

a pocket knife that costs more than the nicest of framing hammers, but you get it.

  • 04:49

The Para Military improves on the Endura by having a more tactical name, using a finer

  • 04:54

blade steel, meaning more theoretical uses per sharpens, and a easier to open and close

  • 04:59

    one handed compression lock.

  • 05:01

Compression locks are only on Spydercos, and considering locking mechanisms are one of

  • 05:08

the only things you can still patent in the knife design world, that’s huge.

  • 05:13

    Especially for patent lawyers.

  • 05:14

Plus the handle is nice and comfortable, it comes in all sorts of limited edition handle

  • 05:19

colors, and blade steels- the Para Military 2 is probably Spydercos best knife.

  • 05:24

If you need something a little smaller, look into the Para 3, which is just a more compact,

  • 05:29

proportioned version of the Para Military 2.

  • 05:32

Both knives have options starting in the $140 range.

  • 05:35

    5.

  • 05:36

Ok let’s get my last Spyderco in the list out of the way.

  • 05:40

    The $170 Caribbean.

  • 05:42

It’s bigger than the Para Military 2, has like it or hate it looks, and has that compression

  • 05:48

lock that has come to be a favorite locking mechanism on a folding knife for me.

  • 05:52

One of the unique features of the Caribbean other than being a larger knife than the PM2

  • 05:57

and only a hair heavier, is it’s blade.

  • 05:59

A rust free steel known as LC200N.

  • 06:02

    Not stainless, rust free.

  • 06:04

If your knife is wet a lot, and you have rust problems, this is the knife for you.

  • 06:13

Despite it’s large size, it has a slim profile in the pocket, and feels like a much smaller

  • 06:17

    knife than it is.

  • 06:18

    6.

  • 06:19

Ok let’s head up the MSRP scale a bit for the Hawk Knives M.U.D.D.

  • 06:24

    Auto.

  • 06:26

The MUDD has seen several revisions and variations over the years.

  • 06:30

All still expensive on the secondary market.

  • 06:32

Zero Tolerance had a MUDD manual that’s been discontinued, and Hawk Knives has made

  • 06:37

manual versions of the MUDD over the years too.

  • 06:41

The current version, that you have to sign up for the email list to purchase, is manufactured

  • 06:45

in the USA by OEM manufacturer named Millit.

  • 06:54

A few times a year a new batch comes up for sale, and sells out fairly quick.

  • 06:58

So when the email shows, up you have to be fast.

  • 07:03

At $390 it isn’t a knife for everyone- and my best justification as to why I like the

  • 07:08

knife so much is it’s one of my favorite designs.

  • 07:11

I mean it’s also made from pretty premium materials, has a great blade steel that’s

  • 07:15

    M390-ish in performance called 20CV.

  • 07:17

Fit and finish is excellent- every surface has been chamfered, tumbled and rounded so

  • 07:22

it feels nice and comfortable in the hand.

  • 07:25

I don’t really like many autos, especially standard folding out the side varieties.

  • 07:30

It fits most of my qualifications for an every day carry… the main negatives are it’s

  • 07:35

a little on the heavier side for my tastes at 4.5 ounces, and side autos aren’t the

  • 07:39

    easiest to close one handed

  • 07:41

    7.

  • 07:43

Ok next up is another Benchmade.

  • 07:45

Now over the years I’ve reviewed quite a few Benchmades, and while it might could be

  • 07:50

argued that there are better Benchmades for pocket carry, like the 940, the Bugout, the

  • 07:55

Freek, the Griptilian, My favorite weekend carry Benchmade is the full Sized Crooked

  • 08:01

    River.

  • 08:02

It’s a big ass knife, and boy is it pretty.

  • 08:08

A rational person might rightly point out that the Mini Crooked River is probably a

  • 08:12

better choice for an every day knife- but the full size just feels right.

  • 08:17

It has classic lines and profiles, inspired by knives like the Buck 110.

  • 08:23

I don’t like the Buck 110 much other than it’s classic looks.

  • 08:26

mainly because the 110 is a handle heavy knife, it’s hard to close one handed, you have

  • 08:31

to carry it on your belt or sideways with your keys in the bottom of your pockets- but

  • 08:36

I get why some people like your Uncle Randy like it.

  • 08:40

The full sized crooked river isn’t that heavier either- in fact it’s nearly 2 ounces

  • 08:44

lighter than the smaller buck 110.

  • 08:46

It’s comfortable to hold- even though it might be a bit slippery, and it’s super

  • 08:50

easy to open and close one handed.

  • 08:52

Is it worth the $190 for the made in USA beast?

  • 08:55

    Sure.

  • 08:56

    Everything’s worth something to someone.

  • 08:58

    8.

  • 08:59

I’m going to cheat a little with this one.

  • 09:02

If you need a basic tool, that’s useful and not some pocket vanity bullshit like most

  • 09:06

of this list just buy a Leatherman Wave.

  • 09:09

It has a 25 year, if you break something on it, we fix it warranty.

  • 09:15

And is arguably more useful that a pocket knife just by itself.

  • 09:19

You can even get a pocket clip for it, if you don’t want to carry it on your belt.

  • 09:23

I owned and used a Leatherman Tool for years before I bought any dedicated pocket knives-

  • 09:28

and a multitool is a useful camping tool, work tool, and every day carry tool.

  • 09:35

I own nearly all the current production weatherman tools, even the Charge TTi- and this is the

  • 09:45

    most well rounded for me.

  • 09:46

I did a review of this and nearly all other knives here- so be sure to check this and

  • 09:51

    those out.

  • 09:52

    9.

  • 09:53

    The GEC Bull Buster.

  • 09:54

Based on the classic Sodbuster knife pattern, mainly you’re missing modern things like

  • 09:58

a lock, a pocket clip, and s stainless steel blade.

  • 10:02

Which is no big deal since those only became popular features on pocket knives in the 80’s.

  • 10:08

Before the 1980s adding a pocket clip to a knife was a pretty much impossible engineering

  • 10:14

    challenging.

  • 10:15

Think the miracle of flight, except some bullshit I just made up.

  • 10:18

However, the disadvantages to carrying modern knives are the lectures from Uncle Randys

  • 10:22

telling you that pocket clips and locks are for soft modern beta males.

  • 10:28

No exaggeration unfortunately, however you can rest easy knowing that people are so sick

  • 10:36

of Uncle Randys whining and perceptions on what make men- men, that now the only place

  • 10:41

an Uncle Randy will think people still value his opinion is on the internet.

  • 10:43

The GEC Sodbuster is one of only 2 affordable production Sodbuster styles still made in

  • 10:49

    the US.

  • 10:50

It has a rust curious carbon steel blade, that builds character as you use it.

  • 10:54

Wiping down and oiling your blade might not prevent discoloration- but it’ll keep any

  • 10:59

    serious rust at bay.

  • 11:01

This particular variation has a polished green micarta handle, which is smooth and comfortable.

  • 11:06

It comes sorta sharp- like a lot of old knives too.

  • 11:09

It costs only about $65, and if you’re a cheap asshole just buy a $30 case sodbuster,

  • 11:15

which is only slightly less refined- and has a plastic handle.

  • 11:18

    10.

  • 11:19

    Ok we’re getting there.

  • 11:20

I’m gonna make the second to last knife on here, something a little more outside the

  • 11:23

box of my taste in knives.

  • 11:27

    The HEAdesigns Poison.

  • 11:29

This smallish titanium flipper, and the similar model the antidote are fun compact fidget

  • 11:34

    friendly knives.

  • 11:35

I don’t normally like tanto grinds for the cutting edge on blades, but I just like the

  • 11:40

design so much that I let it slide.

  • 11:42

It’s lightweight, the blade rockets out when you hit the tab, and it sports a decent

  • 11:46

    s35vn stainless steel.

  • 11:48

At $280 it ain’t cheap, although I paid a little under $200 for mine.

  • 11:53

Which brings me to the final knife.

  • 11:54

Seriously just look at it closed.

  • 11:55

Ok you don’t have to like it, that’s why this is my list.

  • 11:56

    11.

  • 11:57

11 is an appropriate number for the Chris Reeve Sebenza 21.

  • 12:00

Chris Reeve knives are often regarded as the finest production knives, by internet knife

  • 12:05

    experts everywhere.

  • 12:09

Apparantly one of the best selling knives too, if reddit knife swap is any indication.

  • 12:19

This is because they’re made out of premium materials in the USA, and have an incredible

  • 12:24

    attention to detail.

  • 12:25

This limited edition Knifeart.com exclusive cost me a cool $455 at the time, which was

  • 12:31

a bit above the standard run of the mill $400 sebenza.

  • 12:35

It’s half carbon fiber construction keeps the weight under 4 ounces.

  • 12:41

And if I’m spending this much on a knife it better be under 4 ounces, or I better love

  • 12:45

    the design.

  • 12:46

It’s a very comfortable, solid knife.

  • 12:48

It’s durable, and comes in a real nice box.

  • 12:51

Now it’s true you’ll be less likely to find an uneven blade grind, or off centered

  • 12:56

blade, than say a USA made bench made or spyderco- but the sebenza is kind of a slow deploying

  • 13:03

    knife.

  • 13:04

It’s not something that necessarily performs better than say a Benchmade Bugout, but it’s

  • 13:08

    titanium ok!

  • 13:11

I whooped up on the Bugout a similar amount, and believe it or not the bugout held up a

  • 13:22

    bit better.

  • 13:23

Also it is possible to google sebenza never grind, and off centered blade and get results.

  • 13:30

    Shh… don’t tell anyone.

  • 13:32

Buying this knife taught me that spending a great amount on a production knife is often

  • 13:38

more about branding and an intangible reputation, than performance.

  • 13:43

If you absolutely love the design the knife is probably worth it- if you are just curious

  • 13:48

and you own a few $100-$200 production knives that you’re really happy with- don’t expect

  • 13:53

the sebenza to change your life.

  • 13:55

Anyway, so like- subscribe, watch all the full reviews for these knives linked below
