  • 00:00

Listening is one of the hardest parts of learning English, it can make you nervous because you

  • 00:06

    can't understand what's being said.

  • 00:09

How do you become a fluent listener of English?

  • 00:13

    Let's find out.

  • 00:20

Before we look at how to become a fluent listener of English, make sure you click that subscribe

  • 00:25

button for brand new videos every single week.

  • 00:29

So in today's lesson, we're going to learn how to listen in English.

  • 00:35

I'll teach you how to become a fluent listener, how to improve your concentration, and also

  • 00:43

how to use a podcast to improve your English language listening skills.

  • 00:50

So how do you listen in English effectively?

  • 00:54

According to science, there are two different ways that we actually listen.

  • 01:00

The first way that we listen is when we hear the features of the language, you actually

  • 01:07

listen by hearing the sounds, the words, the phrases, and the sentences of English, the

  • 01:16

vocabulary, the grammar, and the pronunciation.

  • 01:21

This is called bottom up listening.

  • 01:24

This is where you're listening to all the different parts of the language.

  • 01:28

But there's another way that you listen as well.

  • 01:32

This second way that we listen is called top down listening.

  • 01:36

And this is where you bring all of your understanding of the world, all of your background knowledge

  • 01:43

to the listening, for example, you draw upon your past experiences, and your memories,

  • 01:50

and your understanding of the topic that you're listening to.

  • 01:55

So the first way that we listen is pure listening from the language itself.

  • 02:00

The second way that we listen is using all of our background knowledge about the topic.

  • 02:07

So how do you become a fluent listener of English?

  • 02:12

So firstly, you need to have a broad vocabulary, a big vocabulary, you need to understand lots

  • 02:19

    of different words.

  • 02:21

And you also need to understand the grammar or the rules around these words, you need

  • 02:28

to understand 9 out of every 10 words that are spoken in order to understand what the

  • 02:35

    person is saying.

  • 02:37

Now, listening is very different to reading.

  • 02:41

When you're reading, you're reading the written language.

  • 02:44

But when you're listening, you're hearing the spoken language.

  • 02:49

When somebody speaks, they speak very differently to when they write.

  • 02:55

    Speaking is very messy.

  • 02:57

And there are all these different parts of spoken English.

  • 03:01

So listening is very different to reading.

  • 03:04

You might be a good reader, but you might not be a good listener, because spoken English

  • 03:10

    has all those different parts.

  • 03:13

Now, how do you become an automatic listener?

  • 03:17

How do you become a fluent listener in English?

  • 03:20

Now, when you begin learning English, you're probably going to translate everything you

  • 03:26

    hear into your first language.

  • 03:29

So when the speaker says something, you will hear it, and then translate it into your first

  • 03:35

    language.

  • 03:37

As you become better and better at English, the less and less you will translate what's

  • 03:42

being said, and the more what you hear will be automatic.

  • 03:48

So to become a fluent listener, you need to translate less and less, you need to understand

  • 03:55

    what's being said automatically.

  • 03:57

And you do this by exposing yourself to more and more listening, more and more content.

  • 04:05

But how do you improve your concentration when listening?

  • 04:09

Listening can also be difficult because our minds wander, we can't concentrate, we can't

  • 04:16

    keep paying attention.

  • 04:17

There are two reasons why you will lose concentration.

  • 04:21

The first reason is that your mind will wander, you'll start to think about lunch or you'll

  • 04:27

start to think about what your boyfriend or girlfriend said to you last night.

  • 04:32

The second reason you will lose concentration is because the content, what you're listening

  • 04:38

    to, is too difficult.

  • 04:41

    You simply cannot follow it.

  • 04:43

I've got something really exciting to talk to you about that is going to help you to

  • 04:48
