  • 00:05

Are there two sides to people?

  • 00:07

    Something good, something bad?

  • 00:09

    Light, dark?

  • 00:11

In the original Star Wars trilogy the force is used as a way to describe a general spirituality,

  • 00:16

something akin to our own universe; billions of people rallying around something invisible,

  • 00:21

something internally experienced, believed to be part of life.

  • 00:24

The force is not just sci-fi hokum, it resonates with people, allowing them at least a playful

  • 00:29

version of spirituality to think on, but is there anything more to the force?

  • 00:33

  • 00:34

  • 00:35

And can we learn anything about life from the way the force intertwines with the characters

  • 00:38

in the events of Star Wars?

  • 00:41

Let’s start with what the force is.

  • 00:45

“The force is what gives a Jedi his power.

  • 00:49

It’s an energy field created by all living things.

  • 00:53

It surrounds us and penetrates us.

  • 00:56

    It binds the galaxy together.”

  • 00:58

“Life creates it, makes it grow.

  • 01:05

Its energy surrounds us and binds us.

  • 01:09

Luminous beings are we, not this crude matter.

  • 01:14

You must feel the Force around you; here, between you, me, the tree, the rock, everywhere,

  • 01:26

    yes.”

  • 01:27

According to George Lucas, the force was a way of awakening a certain kind of spirituality

  • 01:30

in those who went to see the movie.

  • 01:32

a combination of all world religions, a way of speaking about certain religious concepts

  • 01:37

like: the existence of God and the nature of good and evil.

  • 01:41

The force can be viewed as a stand in for the concept of God, George used the word “force”

  • 01:45

because of what cinematographer Roman Kroitor said in the short film, 21-87

  • 01:50

“Many people feel that in the contemplation of nature and in communication with other

  • 02:00

living things, they become aware of some kind of force, or something, behind this apparent

  • 02:13

mask which we see in front of us, and they call it God."

  • 02:24

    The force has a way

  • 02:37

and a counter to that way: there’s the light side, which is the path for a Jedi, a path

  • 02:41

    of selflessness.

  • 02:43

But also the dark side which is a path of selfishness.

  • 02:46

The balance of the force takes place within a person when they are neither too selfish

  • 02:50

    nor too selfless.

  • 03:00

This echoes a Hebrew proverb written by King Solomon, “So don’t be too good or too

  • 03:05

    wise!

  • 03:06

    Why destroy yourself?

  • 03:08

On the other hand, don’t be too wicked either.

  • 03:10

    Don’t be a fool!

  • 03:11

    Why die before your time?”

  • 03:13

But if one were to actually follow the way of the force they would find that they would

  • 03:17

avoid the extremes of both the light side and the dark, as is echoed in the conclusion

  • 03:22

to the proverb, “Pay attention to these instructions, for anyone who fears God will

  • 03:26

    avoid both extremes.”

  • 03:28

The balance of the force also echos the middle way in buddhism which advocates avoiding the

  • 03:33

    extremes in life as well.

  • 03:38

The path of the light side is exemplified by Luke and the path of the dark side by Darth

  • 03:42

    Vader, Luke’s father.

  • 03:43

The original Star Wars trilogy deals with the relationship between father and son.

  • 03:47

Lucas studied Joseph Campbell’s work on what is referred to as the monomyth, a look

  • 03:51

at the common themes and motifs running through histories’ different mythologies that descend

  • 03:56

from man’s own experiences, as a reference point to discuss the psychological dilemmas

  • 04:00

of people throughout history and the potential solutions

  • 04:13

    to those dilemmas.

  • 04:24

Star Wars is a museum piece for the psychology of our ancestors focusing, primarily, on our

  • 04:29

relationship to the generations that came before us and the influence they have on our

  • 04:33

    own lives.

  • 04:54

Lucas attended college and began his first forays into filmmaking during the counterculture

  • 04:58

revolution of the sixties which was a rebellion against the corrupt authoritarian structures

  • 05:03

that presided over America at the time.

  • 05:06

This mirrors the Greek myth of the Olympians, the young generation of gods led by Zeus,

  • 05:10

battling the older generation of gods, the Titans led by the evil tyrant Cronus, for

  • 05:15

who would have dominion over the universe.

  • 05:17

History repeating itself, the strength of the monomyth being played out.

  • 05:21

In the Star Wars saga the Empire represents the evil tyranny of an older generation led

  • 05:25

by the emperor and his apprentice Darth Vader and the rebellion represents the idealistic,

  • 05:31

righteous fortitude of the younger generation with Luke eventually joining and becoming

  • 05:35

    one of its leading forces.

  • 05:36

While the galaxy is fighting to see who will come out on top, the evil empire or the noble

  • 05:41

rebellion, Luke’s own journey is unfolding, a journey to becoming a Jedi like his father

  • 05:46

    was.

  • 05:47

In the beginning of Star Wars, Luke has no discernable beliefs and is essentially wasting

  • 05:52

his physical and spiritual existence on frivolity and dreams.

  • 05:59

Then Luke is introduced to the force by Obi Wan Kenobi and later taught by the Jedi master,

  • 06:03

    Yoda.

  • 06:04

All of his training and experiences culminates into him becoming a powerful Jedi who is able

  • 06:08

to harness the light side of the force.

  • 06:10

Vader’s journey starts out much like Luke’s, but instead of finding spiritual enlightenment,

  • 06:15

we find spiritual death; a descent into the dark side of the force.

  • 06:18

He abandons the goodness of the light side of the force for the selfishness and lust

  • 06:22

for power that makes up the dark side.

  • 06:24

In other words he sells his soul and his humanity for what the dark side of the force has to

  • 06:29

    offer.

  • 06:30

His body metamorphosizes into something mechanical, and the darkness completely surrounds him,

  • 06:35

like his black suit; lost and cut off from experiencing the light in the universe both

  • 06:39

    physically and spiritually.

  • 06:41

Vader’s fall parallels the story of Faust who sells his soul to the demon Mephistopheles

  • 06:47

for the pleasures of the world.

  • 06:48

Faust, after attaining some pleasure, ends up getting taken to hell.

  • 06:52

Vader’s hell is his utter loss of humanity and isolation, via the suit and what his choices

  • 06:58

    have brought him.

  • 06:59

The main conflict in the original Star Wars trilogy is can Luke overcome the struggles

  • 07:03

and temptations that his father went through to join the dark side and become a Jedi or

  • 07:08

will he fall into the same traps and essentially become a mirror of his father following in

  • 07:14

his footsteps and inheriting his curses.

  • 07:40

A common theme in religion is wickedness leads to hell or a state of suffering, righteousness

  • 07:53

leads to heaven or a state of bliss; buddhists would articulate this sentiment as oneness

  • 07:58

with the universe leads to nirvana which is a state where people are free from a sense

  • 08:02

of self that binds them to the world and the suffering therein.

  • 08:06

Samsara, on the other hand is a state of mental suffering by which people are bound to this

  • 08:10

world and are stuck in a cycle of reincarnation until they can reach enlightenment and, thus,

  • 08:16

escape the world and therefore the suffering.

  • 08:19

The light side of the force can be seen as a parallel to nirvana and samsara can be regarded

  • 08:24

as a parallel to the dark side.

  • 08:26

The light side is about selflessness which is derived from a lack of ego or a passiveness

  • 08:31

    and adherence to the force.

  • 08:33

The Jedi at one with the force lets the force move through them, unimpeded, letting go of

  • 08:38

thoughts that could interfere with the truth stemming from the force and what the force

  • 08:42

    can do through them.

  • 08:52

A Jedi is disciplined, level headed, at peace, compassionate, merciful, loving and faithful

  • 08:59

to what is true despite what they see.

  • 09:09

The dark side is about selfishness which is derived from greed and wantonness.

  • 09:14

Once one starts down the path to the dark side, or the life of want and desire, they

  • 09:19

are always wanting more causing them to do heinous acts in order to obtain pleasure and

  • 09:24

    possessions.

  • 09:25

This pleasure leads to a fear of others taking away what they have possessed which puts them

  • 09:29

in a state of mind where they are lashing out at others before they can be hurt themselves

  • 09:35

using anger, hatred and murder as methods to procure and maintain power over others.

  • 09:40

“Yes, a Jedi’s strength flows from the Force.

  • 09:41

But beware of the dark side.

  • 09:45

Anger, fear, aggression; the dark side of the Force are they.

  • 09:55

Easily they flow, quick to join you in a fight.

  • 10:04

If once you start down the dark, forever will it dominate your destiny, consume you it will,

  • 10:21

    as it did Obi-Wan’s apprentice.”

  • 10:27

    “Vader”

  • 10:28

Luke’s path to becoming a Jedi and learning the ways of the force parallels the path to

  • 10:34

spiritual enlightenment that takes place in Buddhism away from attachment and Samsara

  • 10:39

and into Nirvana, aka, oneness with the universe or more specifically the eightfold path as

  • 10:46

    laid down by Buddha.

  • 10:48

The eightfold path consists of right view, right thought, right speech, right conduct,

  • 10:53

right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness and right concentration.

  • 10:57

In looking at Luke’s journey through the lens of these paths we can examine where he

  • 11:01

starts out in the first Star Wars and the Empire Strikes Back and see how he changes

  • 11:06

into an enlightened Jedi by the end of Return of the Jedi.

  • 11:09

Luke starts out in both a literally and spiritually arid place, a farm boy on a desert planet

  • 11:14

living to hang out with his friends, work for his uncle and dream about a brighter future.

  • 11:19

At this point Luke is faithless and ignorant on matters of the force until he happens upon

  • 11:24

Obi Wan who introduces him to the force and entices him to learn its ways.

  • 11:29

Right view means that one is perceiving the true nature of reality without illusion or

  • 11:34

    pretense.

  • 11:35

Obi Wan teaches Luke to reach out with his feelings and let the force flow through him

  • 11:39

or in other words to view life through what the force informs him is real and not with

  • 11:44

    his own senses.

  • 11:48

Right thinking also implies right attitude, simply meaning that one must align themselves

  • 11:53

with the truth about reality in order to think and feel correctly.

  • 11:57

Luke in his attachment to his aunt and uncle feels hopeless about his future and fear about

  • 12:01

    leaving them.

  • 12:02

He then loses this attachment when they die.

  • 12:04

In the Empire Strikes Back Luke’s attachment to his friends causes him to fear their death

  • 12:09

and abandon his training to save them and recklessly take on Vader despite warnings

  • 12:14

that he is not efficient enough in the ways of the force and, so, due to his negative

  • 12:18

thoughts and feelings stemming from his attachment to his friends he almost dies.

  • 12:23

Right speech means that one is practicing clear, truthful and non harmful speech.

  • 12:28

Luke starts out in a negative state of mind which follows with a negative way

  • 12:41

    of speaking.

  • 12:46

Right conduct means one is living peacefully and in harmony with others.

  • 12:50

At the beginning of Luke’s journey he is at odds with his uncle and aunt, then Han

  • 12:54

and in Empire Yoda and Vader.

  • 12:56

The last one may seem like a reasonable exception, Vader is evil and murderous, but right conduct

  • 13:02

implies living in harmony with everyone regardless if they are your enemy or not.

  • 13:07

This sentiment by Buddha is echoed by a similar sentiment from Jesus, “Love your enemies,

  • 13:12

do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat

  • 13:16

    you.”

  • 13:17

But instead of embracing this precept, Luke faces Vader in combat.

  • 13:21

Right livelihood has to do with the non exploitation of others.

  • 13:24

In the first Star Wars Luke convinces Han that he should rescue Leah for a reward, exploiting

  • 13:31

his need for money in order to save her.

  • 13:33

Right effort is when one gains control over their thoughts by trading mindsets based in

  • 13:37

Samsara with mindsets based out of Nirvana.

  • 13:40

In Luke’s case Yoda teaches him that he should give up what he had learned in life

  • 13:45

before learning the ways of the force and let the force flow through him so he can utilize

  • 13:50

    its power.

  • 13:51

“You must unlearn what you have learned” Luke considers the feat of pulling his ship

  • 13:56

out of the swamp on Dagobah to be “impossible”, but Yoda reminds him that the force has no

  • 14:02

bounds and size does not matter.

  • 14:13

Luke in his perception of what is impossible renders himself and the power of the force

  • 14:18

    as useless.

  • 14:19

Right mindfulness has to do with developing an awareness of ourselves, our thoughts and

  • 14:23

feelings, other people, things and reality itself and right concentration is when one

  • 14:29

is utterly focused and immersed in the right ways of the paths, practicing and meditating

  • 14:34

on the statutes that stem from nirvana.

  • 14:39

Where Luke was focusing on negative emotions and thoughts from the beginning of the series

  • 14:43

and resisting the ways of the force he has grown considerably at the start of Return

  • 14:47

    of the Jedi.

  • 14:50

To start Luke selflessly rescues Han at his own peril letting the force flow through him

  • 14:55

and utilizing it with skill and ease.

  • 14:57

He is only able to do this by having his view on reality be in line with the force. After

  • 15:03

he visits Yoda who tells him that he must confront Vader in order to become a Jedi he

  • 15:07

joins up with a rebel team that includes Han and Leia to take down a shield generator for

  • 15:12

the new death star on Endor.

  • 15:13

When Luke senses that he might be endangering the mission by

  • 15:16

coming along he is apprehensive, he does not wish to exploit others in order to get close

  • 15:20

    to Vader.

  • 15:21

On Endor Luke turns himself over to vader in order to convince his father to give into

  • 15:26

the good that is still in him.

  • 15:28

From here on Luke is tested to see if he can withstand the temptations of turning to the

  • 15:31

dark side and following in his father’s footsteps.

  • 15:35

Up until this point Luke has demonstrated that he is at harmony and at peace with his

  • 15:40

friends and the force, but as he is tested cracks in his demeanor start to appear.

  • 15:45

The Emperor and his father tempt him to the dark side through using the attachments that

  • 15:49

he still has to the world to spur on fear, anger, hatred and promises of power and possession.

  • 15:56

First he lashes out in hatred and anger at the Emperor for his plan to end the rebellion.

  • 16:01

Second he begins to battle Vader out of anger until he stops himself.

  • 16:04

Then after he refuses to fight for a moment, Vader uses Luke’s attachment to Leia, Luke’s

  • 16:09

sister, threatening that if he doesn’t join the dark side then maybe she will.

  • 16:12

Following this threat Luke strikes out at Vader in a fit of rage and chops off his hand.

  • 16:17

This leads the audience to the climax of Luke’s entire arc as a character, he sees his mechanical

  • 16:22

hand that was given to him after it was lopped off by his father and realizes that he is

  • 16:26

heading down the same path as him.

  • 16:28

He throws away his lightsaber and states that he will never join the dark side.

  • 16:32

Here we see the culmination and fruition of the right paths that Luke was tested on.

  • 16:36

He gives up the cause of his anger, which was rooted in his attachment to his sister,

  • 16:40

and even permits his own death by throwing away his method of defense; he is free to

  • 16:44

die and free from attachment to this world and is, therefore, truly enlightened or, in

  • 16:49

the case of the movies, at one with the light side of the force.

  • 16:56

    Two paths in Star Wars.

  • 17:01

Dark or Light, bad or good, empire or rebellion.

  • 17:04

The big, bad empire spans across the galaxy in Star Wars just like the corrupt governments

  • 17:09

and soulless corporations that spread their influence across our world, tyrannically ruling

  • 17:14

and imposing their special interests on everyone regardless of the way it negatively affects

  • 17:19

    people.

  • 17:20

We live in a world ruled over by the equivalent of a dark force that manifests when people

  • 17:24

desire power over their own lives and the lives of others which makes them turn into

  • 17:29

soulless machinations of who they were, like Vader.

  • 17:32

We can spend our lives on the farm under the dominion of the empire, living a dull, monotonous

  • 17:37

life as nothing more than a drone to work and dream about what could be better

  • 17:41

“All his life as he looked away… to the future, to the horizon.

  • 17:53

Never his mind on where he was.

  • 17:56

    Hmm?

  • 17:57

    What he was doing.

  • 18:00

    Hmph.

  • 18:01

    Adventure.

  • 18:02

    Heh.

  • 18:03

    Excitement.

  • 18:04

    Heh.

  • 18:05

A Jedi craves not these things.

  • 18:07

    You are reckless.”

  • 18:09

or we can start our own spiritual journey towards enlightenment, overcoming the negative

  • 18:14

influences of our family lineage and becoming a person at peace and one with the universe

  • 18:19

who is an ambassador for good, an upholder of faith for what is true and a promoter of

  • 18:24

    compassion, love and mercy.
