  • 00:01

    Coming up!

  • 00:02

The Blue World team drifts along an underground river, hoping to reach the exit!

  • 00:09

Welcome to Jonathan Bird’s Blue World!

  • 00:25

Drift diving is a type of diving where you jump into moving water and go with the flow.

  • 00:31

In the ocean, this usually means that a boat follows you and picks you up where ever you

  • 00:37

    decide to surface.

  • 00:38

It’s a lot of fun and super easy, because you don’t have to swim hard, and you don’t

  • 00:44

need to worry about getting back to where you started.

  • 00:48

Cave diving is almost never done this way because you can’t surface except where you

  • 00:53

    started.

  • 00:55

So cave divers usually try not to get involved in high current situations.

  • 01:01

But as with all things, there are exceptions.

  • 01:08

Cameraman Todd, Cameraman Zach, and I have come to central Florida in search of a famous

  • 01:15

    cave drift dive.

  • 01:18

We stop at our favorite dive shop to rent some scuba tanks and get air fills.

  • 01:25

Then it’s off to Manatee Springs State Park, where they do have manatees, but that’s

  • 01:34

    not why we’re here.

  • 01:36

We start with a quick tour of the area.

  • 01:40

Since Zach has done this dive before, he explains how it will work.

  • 01:45

Manatee Springs is a place where an underground river flows out of the ground and joins into

  • 01:51

    the Suwannee River.

  • 01:53

So the state park has a huge submerged cave system underneath it, emerging at both Manatee

  • 02:01

Spring and a spring called Catfish Hotel.

  • 02:05

Catfish hotel is covered in duckweed and looks like a little pond.

  • 02:10

We’re going to make sure that it’s clear, that there’s nothing obstructing the entrance

  • 02:13

here then we’re to go off into the woods, we’re going to find Friedman’s Sink, and

  • 02:17

we’re going to drift down and we’re going to meet ZP back here.

  • 02:20

We talk a walk into the woods to find Friedman’s Sink.

  • 02:24

That does not look like something that’s diveable.

  • 02:29

That looks like a puddle in the woods!

  • 02:31

It is a puddle in the woods!

  • 02:36

But it’s a diveable puddle in the woods.

  • 02:39

    Wow!

  • 02:40

    That’s crazy!

  • 02:42

Where’s the part where you go in?

  • 02:45

    Right there!

  • 02:47

Today, we’re going to do a cave drift dive.

  • 02:51

Where we’re going to go in here and we’re going to come out downstream at the Catfish

  • 02:57

    hotel!

  • 02:58

Once we swim down into the current of the underground river, we won’t have enough

  • 03:03

air to get back to where we started at Friedman Sink, so we have to drift all the way to the

  • 03:10

    next exit.

  • 03:11

There is one emergency exit called Sue’s Spring before Catfish Hotel if we have a problem.

  • 03:18

This type of dive is generally not considered proper cave diving protocol.

  • 03:22

The only reason we are doing it is because hundreds of cave divers have done it before

  • 03:29

and proved that it’s short enough to make the distance with no problem.

  • 03:33

I’m super excited, but also a bit nervous as we start gearing up.

  • 03:48

    [Singing a sea shanty]

  • 04:22

Looking straight down, I can’t believe there is a hole into a cave at the bottom of this

  • 04:27

    little puddle in the woods.

  • 04:32

Zach knows the way, so we let him lead.

  • 04:35

Of course the minute we move, we kick up all kinds of sediment.

  • 04:43

    Hey Everybody!

  • 04:52

    Have you subscribed?

  • 05:01

Todd and I follow Zach down the hole and emerge into the cave, with strong current passing

  • 05:17

    by.

  • 05:18

It’s also filled with particulate matter.

  • 05:21

I was definitely expecting better visibility.

  • 05:35

Once we have gotten our buoyancy dialed in, we start swimming gently with the current.

  • 05:40

Fortunately, the current is doing most of the work.

  • 05:45

Zach keeps his primary light on the guideline.

  • 05:49

In this visibility, we have to work extra hard not to lose sight of it.

  • 05:59

It’s a very disconcerting feeling knowing that after a few minutes of drifting, we probably

  • 06:08

would not be able to get back to Friedman sink if we had to--against the current.

  • 06:49

Soon we have travelled 700 feet, which is the halfway point between Friedman Sink and

  • 06:54

    the next possible exit.

  • 07:01

In larger sections of the cave, the current gets slower and the pace feels a little more

  • 07:06

    relaxed.

  • 07:07

But I can’t stop thinking about how far the next exit will be.

  • 07:29

In a smaller, low section, the water moves faster and we don’t really even need to

  • 07:53

    kick.

  • 08:01

Zach points out the line that will take us up to a small possible exit, known as Sue’s

  • 08:06

    Spring.

  • 08:07

But since we are doing fine and have plenty of air, we will keep going towards the Catfish

  • 08:13

    Hotel.

  • 08:39

Finally we reach a section of the cave that begins to angle upwards.

  • 08:43

We’re approaching the end of the line.

  • 08:53

Finally we enter the cavern zone, and we can see daylight.

  • 09:48

Catfish Hotel might be known for its large population of catfish, but we’re not finding

  • 09:53

    very many.

  • 09:56

The holes in the rocks are supposed to have catfish in them.

  • 09:59

I guess there’s a vacancy at the hotel.

  • 10:03

I hunt around under a ledge and find a few hiding.

  • 10:25

Hunting for catfish is a good way to do a little decompression stop.

  • 10:29

Since the dive was almost 90 feet, I will need some time to decompress before surfacing.

  • 10:45

Zach has found a little turtle hanging out.

  • 10:54

The surface of the spring is covered in algae and duckweed, which makes for a dramatic underwater

  • 11:07

    view.

  • 11:08

I’m thinking that if I surface through all this stuff, my gear will be covered in algae.

  • 11:31

We head over to the swim platform and I use my regulator to clear out a spot to surface.

  • 11:59

Man, that was a wild ride!

  • 12:11

    That was fun!

  • 12:12

It goes against all my training, but it was fun!

  • 12:16

The drift from Friedman Sink to Catfish Hotel is an exhilarating, but extremely unusual,

  • 12:23

    cave dive.

  • 12:24

This practice goes against standard cave training and is only undertaken here because of the

  • 12:29

short distance, multiple exit points and long history.

  • 12:34

This is one of the only dives of its type in the world, and it’s a thrill every cave

  • 12:39

    diver should experience.
