  • 00:01

    Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn!

  • 00:15

    The stars are right.

  • 00:17

Ancient doom stirs in the depths, plotting, planning, preparing for his return.

  • 00:25

Unknowable and ancient, he desires, but one thing.

  • 00:29

To make a video on cosmic horror and get that sweet sweet YouTube ad revenue.

  • 00:36

Cosmic horror, or also commonly called Lovecraftian Horror is a genre of horror popularized by

  • 00:42

    the works of HP Lovecraft.

  • 00:44

As Halloween draws near it presents a prime opportunity to explore this genre and to give

  • 00:49

thanks to the Great Old Ones for not devouring mankind until my check clears and I’ve had

  • 00:54

some time to enjoy my YouTube success.

  • 00:56

So let us dive into the forbidden knowledge of how to write Cosmic Horror and then go

  • 01:01

    mad from the revelation.

  • 01:03

We should start at the top by constructing our own pantheon of eldritch god like beings.

  • 01:08

Given the alien nature of many of members of Lovecraft’s pantheon, this means that

  • 01:13

a writer can come up all manner of strange and creative all powerful cosmic entities

  • 01:17

to populate their very own mythos.

  • 01:19

    A universe of possibilities exists.

  • 01:22

What name shall I call my version of Lovercraft’s Great Old Ones?

  • 01:26

    I know.

  • 01:27

I call them the Great Old Ones.

  • 01:28

I’m sure a one to one copy won’t dilute the horror too much.

  • 01:32

Not enough creativity to come up with new eldritch gods?

  • 01:34

Too lazy to even copy Lovecraft’s pantheon?

  • 01:38

    That’s 100% fine.

  • 01:40

Just leave the cast of ancient gods vaguely defined and eternally in the background of

  • 01:44

    the story.

  • 01:45

Oh they are there being dark and unknowable.

  • 01:47

I assure you because the characters refer to them all the time as though they are a

  • 01:51

    great threat.

  • 01:52

    Will they ever show up?

  • 01:53

I mean, if the book sells enough for a sequel maybe?

  • 01:57

Otherwise I’m not putting effort into that!

  • 01:58

Besides, the ancient gods can’t show up because the world would end along with any

  • 02:02

    series potential.

  • 02:03

Instead, we should now shift our focus to the servitors of the ancient deities.

  • 02:08

    That’s right.

  • 02:09

    It’s my favorite part!

  • 02:10

    Designing monsters!

  • 02:12

Unlike a lot of genres, Cosmic Horror writers are free to dive deep into their imaginations

  • 02:17

and create truly twisted and alien creatures.

  • 02:20

    Wow.

  • 02:21

This creature sure looks cool in my imagination, but um… how do I describe it?

  • 02:26

    Crap.

  • 02:27

That’s kind of hard and I’ve got a better idea.

  • 02:30

You see, I don’t have give my monsters cool descriptions because it is so alien that it

  • 02:35

    is indescribable.

  • 02:37

The main characters can’t get a good look at it because I don’t want to write descriptive

  • 02:40

prose... uh I mean it would drive them mad to look upon it!

  • 02:45

If a writer does want to try their hand at describing their very own ancient horror then

  • 02:49

just combine one or more tentacles, mouths, and/or eyes.

  • 02:53

    Make it semi formless too.

  • 02:54

Basically just make varying sizes of wannabe Shoggoths.

  • 02:58

That’s the standard issue cosmic horror monster or some of the things I found under

  • 03:02

the sink in my old apartment.

  • 03:04

But how do these monsters cross over onto Earth?

  • 03:07

Minus the odd cosmic weak point in the veil that separates our world from the beyond,

  • 03:12

one method is through a book of DOOM or as I like to call them the Not Necronomicon.

  • 03:19

These books are usually authored by mad men of one variety or another and contain terrible,

  • 03:24

ancient, and forbidden knowledge and I am assuming they get poor reviews on Amazon as

  • 03:28

    well.

  • 03:29

The Not Necronomicon frequently ends up in the hands of dangerous and mysterious cults

  • 03:34

who use the rites and rituals within to summon horrible horrific horrors to harry and hound

  • 03:38

    helpless humans.

  • 03:39

You know, I always wondered what the cults got out of this?

  • 03:42

I mean, most of these ancient entities are planning to end the world and its not like

  • 03:46

the average eldritch god typically offers a good retirement package or anything.

  • 03:50

I guess the cultists are just insane, but not so insane that they can’t manage the

  • 03:54

logistics necessary for nightly human sacrifices while maintaining a huge informant network

  • 03:59

and infiltrating the regional government so their activities continued ignored.

  • 04:03

These cultists should be presented as faceless drones so they can be used as cheap disposable

  • 04:07

bag guys for the main characters to fight.

  • 04:09

I mean, we wouldn’t want to dig into how real life cults work because that crap is

  • 04:12

a 1000 times more terrifying than any story I have ever read.

  • 04:16

    Yikes.

  • 04:17

Let’s move on to something more pleasant in our Lovecraft ripoff checklist.

  • 04:21

    Let’s see what’s next?

  • 04:24

I better copy everything Lovecraft did in his works and make no alterations to any aspect

  • 04:28

    of his writing and…

  • 04:29

    Yeah.

  • 04:30

Gonna sweep that one under the rug there.

  • 04:34

Maybe taking everything from Lovecraft wasn’t such a good idea.

  • 04:37

    That’s fine.

  • 04:38

The best thing about Cosmic Horror is that it fits great into most science fiction or

  • 04:42

    fantasy settings.

  • 04:44

    Mostly.

  • 04:45

There is the small chance that suddenly adding cosmic horror into a fairly pedestrian, upbeat

  • 04:50

fantasy or science fiction story without any foreshadowing might completely ruin the light

  • 04:55

    tone.

  • 04:56

I mean, watching your typical upbeat, plucky fantasy party suddenly get ripped limb from

  • 04:59

limb by horrors from beyond time and space at the plot’s halfway point with the only

  • 05:03

survivors being driven mad will certainly leave an impression on the reader.

  • 05:07

Should I have a dark undercurrent run through the first part of the story while laying clues

  • 05:11

for the reader to speculate at the universe’s darker nature before eviscerating my main

  • 05:15

    characters?

  • 05:16

    Of course not.

  • 05:17

We want to maximize the impact of the cosmic horror and probably the impact of our book

  • 05:22

as it is thrown across the room by our reader.

  • 05:24

    Hmm.

  • 05:25

Why our book is leaving an impact, it’s not exactly the impact I wanted.

  • 05:28

Perhaps I should consider the core elements that make cosmic horror so effective?

  • 05:33

Is it the impossible architecture of the strange and alien civilizations that inhabit the cosmos

  • 05:38

or their mysterious obelisks engraved with ancient runic writing?

  • 05:42

It is strange and sinister, maybe even unsettling, but doesn’t quite instill the horror that

  • 05:46

    I am aiming for.

  • 05:48

Maybe the real horror of Cosmic Horror is fear of the unknown, that the vast universe

  • 05:54

is full of that which can never be fully understood without taking a terrible toll.

  • 05:59

Maybe it isn’t the visceral fear of dripping fangs, but the misshapen otherness of the

  • 06:04

shuffling horrors in the dark whose alien mind and intentions are truly unfathomable.

  • 06:09

That the universe is an empty void, uncaring of our very existence and so vast that our

  • 06:16

eyes can only see faint the outlines of the true horrors lurking in the dark.

  • 06:21

    Nah.

  • 06:22

    That can’t be it.

  • 06:24

All I know is that I am tired of this.

  • 06:26

No more hiding in the dark!

  • 06:27

I’m sick of being pushed around by ancient cosmic entities!

  • 06:31

Grab a weapon and a torch.

  • 06:32

We are going to face those eldritch horrors!

  • 06:34

    That’s right.

  • 06:35

    This isn’t cosmic horror anymore.

  • 06:37

    This is Lovecraft Light!

  • 06:39

The monsters in the dark can be beaten, they can be pushed back!

  • 06:44

Maybe the universe is cold and pitiless, but we will face it none the less because in this

  • 06:48

universe, we have something far stronger than ancient unknowable alien gods on our side,

  • 06:53

    authorial bias!

  • 06:54

    That’s right.

  • 06:56

Just cherry pick the parts of cosmic horror you like and ditch the rest.

  • 06:59

Finding a balance and reinterpreting the elements of Lovecraftian horror can produce some amazing

  • 07:04

fiction, which is why you should keep chipping away at it until all that is left is a couple

  • 07:08

of strange monsters for the heroes to fight.

  • 07:11

Just water down the horror until the only fear left is that the ancient abomination

  • 07:15

won’t drop any good loot after its killed by the main characters.

  • 07:18

    Eh.

  • 07:19

I guess that wouldn’t really ever happen.

  • 07:22

Human beings are mere insects compared to the eldritch gods much like how humans are

  • 07:26

    to ants.

  • 07:27

By the way, did you know that 20 to 50 humans a year are killed by ants.

  • 07:31

Isn’t that an interesting statistic, Cthulhu?
