  • 00:00

    This is nuts

  • 00:02

Bangkok is a city that I think is vastly misunderstood.

  • 00:06

To many travellers, it’s a dirty, sleazy place that doesn’t leave the best of impressions.

  • 00:14

And honestly if you spend too much time in a touristy area like the Khoa San Road.

  • 00:19

    It’s easy to see why.

  • 00:21

It’s kind of symbolic of everything that’s crazy and wrong about Thailand.

  • 00:27

    Cocktails in buckets.

  • 00:29

    Ping pong shows.

  • 00:30

    All the good stuff.

  • 00:31

Yet this is the place where most young travellers find themselves spending a lot of their time.

  • 00:37

It’s a shame because I think it forms a lot of peoples opinions about the entire city.

  • 00:43

To me its like watching the first 10 minutes of a film or TV show and deciding: nah it’s

  • 00:48

    all rubbish.

  • 00:49

I just think that’s a shame because to me Bangkok is so much more than a bad one day

  • 00:56

experience at the start of a holiday.

  • 00:59

So in this film I want to show you the best of the best, every single eason why this is

  • 01:05

one of my favourite cities in the whole world.

  • 01:08

My name is Ryan and this is 10 reasons why I love Bangkok.

  • 01:16

Instead of heading towards the main tourist sights of the city, I recommend starting your

  • 01:20

    day a little differently.

  • 01:23

This is the Khlom Lat Mayom floating market which is probably one of my favourite spots

  • 01:27

for food in the whole of Bangkok.

  • 01:32

What sets this place apart from the many floating markets around Bangkok is it’s strong emphasis

  • 01:37

on delicious food over tacky souvenirs.

  • 01:41

if there's one thing you have to try, it's the salt baked snakehead fish.

  • 01:48

the signature dish of the whole market.

  • 01:54

    Really good, so fresh!

  • 01:59

For me Khlom Lat Mayom is an unmissable foodie experience.

  • 02:05

And it also ties in nicely to entry number 2.

  • 02:08

Bangkok has a seemingly endless web of canals and waterways stretching all over town.

  • 02:15

So to miss seeing this side of the city would be an absolute crime.

  • 02:23

Whether you take one of the many private boat experiences or just hop on to the public water

  • 02:28

    buses.

  • 02:29

Sure it’s dirty like a lot of city rivers but the waterways of Bangkok are absolutely

  • 02:35

teeming with local life and a surprising ammount of nature too.

  • 02:41

My favourite route around the river actually leaves directly from the pier at the Khlom

  • 02:46

    Lat Mayom market.

  • 02:47

You can join a group tour boat for 100 baht per person or you can get an entire boat to yourself

  • 02:52

    for 400 baht.

  • 02:56

The tour lasts an hour and a half, taking you past floating villages, temples and in

  • 03:02

    our case.

  • 03:03

    a miracle dog.

  • 03:06

You can choose from about three places to stop on your boat trip.

  • 03:09

The most popular being one of these orchid farms.

  • 03:15

Such a different vibe from in the city which is only half an hour drive away.

  • 03:19

And it’s actually a surprisingly efficient way to get around because the car traffic

  • 03:24

on the roads is absolutely mental. Bangkok is well known for it’s affordable accommodation

  • 03:32

options, but you still might be surprised by just how far your money can go.

  • 03:45

    This is the Marriot Surawongse.

  • 03:48

A brand new 5 star hotel that basically blew my mind.

  • 03:53

In most of Europe or the states, this kind of accommodation is pretty much unattainable

  • 03:59

    for anybody on a budget.

  • 04:02

And while it definitely isnt dirt cheap.

  • 04:05

You can bag yourself a one bedroom residential apartment for 6000 baht and I don’t think

  • 04:11

I’ve ever set foot in somewhere so luxurious.

  • 04:14

This is the most insane hotel room I have ever been in in my whole life! The equivalent

  • 04:22

quality in Europe or most other places around the world is going to cost you a hell of a

  • 04:28

    lot more.

  • 04:29

So if you are looking for somewhere to treat yourself it doesn’t get much better than

  • 04:33

    Bangkok.

  • 04:35

    And speaking of treating yourself.

  • 04:40

The Chatuchak weekend market is an insanely big labyrinth of stalls.

  • 04:45

When you pass over it on the skytrain, it looks like a town in of itself.

  • 04:51

Seriously if you don’t get lost here, you’re probably doing it wrong.I highly recommend

  • 04:59

coming here and bartering with all of the stall owners to grab a few bargains.

  • 05:04

But whilst Chatuchak market is popular tourist destination, there’s actually a bit of a

  • 05:10

hidden gem just across the road that not many people know about.

  • 05:18

Just a short walk away from the Chatuchak market is another area called the Flea Market

  • 05:22

which when the sun goes down is a bit of a hidden gem.

  • 05:27

This is the Camp Flea Market.

  • 05:29

A little slice of hipster Shoreditch or Brooklyn in the middle of Bangkok.

  • 05:38

It’s very chilled out and very instagramable, I mean there’s a bloody plane parked on

  • 05:43

    top of it.

  • 05:44

It’s a pretty small area filled with some cool cafes and vintage stores filled with

  • 05:50

antiques that nobody would ever buy.But to really appreciate it you need to come in the

  • 05:55

evening when all of the stores open up and there is a really cool atmosphere.

  • 06:00

There’s Food, there’s drinks, all with a local hipster flavour. But maybe this isnt

  • 06:07

really your scene and maybe you prefer something a bit more luxurious.

  • 06:13

Seeing the blade runner-esque skyline with a cocktail in hand is a Bangkok essential.

  • 06:19

There are plenty of rooftop bars all over the city.

  • 06:23

The Marriot Surawongse has a really great one that doesn’t get too crowded.

  • 06:29

But the best and the highest view over Bangkok is at the skybar.

  • 06:36

Now the drinks are insanely expensive but you can still climb up to the rooftop for

  • 06:41

free and grab a few pictures.

  • 06:43

It really is the best view over the skyline especially at night.

  • 06:52

We've already talked about Bangkok as a great budget shopping destination, but what about

  • 06:57

    the higher end?

  • 06:59

Icon Siam is the newest mall on the Bangkok scene and it’s without a doubt the most

  • 07:04

    impressive yet.

  • 07:06

There are free shuttle boats from various stops long the river and drop you right outside.

  • 07:12

With it’s light shows and fountains it looks more like some sort of space palace than shopping

  • 07:18

    mall.

  • 07:21

    This place is crazy.

  • 07:23

It even puts Dubai to shame.

  • 07:26

All of the biggest luxury brands are here but the most fun to be found is down in the

  • 07:32

    food court.

  • 07:33

Where you can find some surprisingly cheap things to eat, which I definitely didn’t

  • 07:37

expect from somewhere selling Prada on the floor above.

  • 07:40

The entire basement has been designed to resemble traditional Thai markets and the food is really

  • 07:46

    good.

  • 07:47

There’s even some indoor floating market stalls which gives the whole place the feel

  • 07:52

of Vegas hotel which is quite a bit of fun.

  • 07:55

You can grab 2 or 3 dishes for under 100 baht which is a great deal.

  • 08:01

I feel like I’d need a whole 20 minute video just to explore this place, it is absolutely

  • 08:06

    insane.

  • 08:12

Even after you’ve seen the Grand Palace and a lot of the most famous temples of the

  • 08:15

    city.

  • 08:16

There is always going to be more to see here.

  • 08:20

Wat Arun or the Temple of Dawn is definitely one of the more well known attractions on

  • 08:24

this list but I think it offers something different to a lot of other temples of the

  • 08:29

    city.

  • 08:30

For a start, It only costs 50 baht to get in and what I particularly like about it is

  • 08:35

all of the little details once you get up close to it.

  • 08:39

Another more unusual temple that I had never seen before is the Golden Mount.

  • 08:44

It’s a buddhist temple that also features some amazing views over the city.

  • 08:50

Now, the climb up to the top is a little surreal because it kind of has the vibe of a Disneyland

  • 08:55

    queue.

  • 08:59

But once you get up to the top it all opens up and you get some amazing views of the city.

  • 09:08

To finish off this list I want to show you around what is undoubtably Bangkok’s coolest

  • 09:13

    suburb.

  • 09:16

Bangkok has 50 different districts and I’m currently way out of the city centre in Wattaya

  • 09:21

district in an area called Ari.

  • 09:25

Ari is close to the Chatuchak area but far removed from the busier areas of the city.

  • 09:31

A hipster hub of coffee shops, restaurants and great shopping.

  • 09:36

The surrounding area also has some amazing long term accommodation options.

  • 09:42

Welcome to our £20 a night apartment in an area called Bang Sue.

  • 09:47

    Stop laughing.

  • 09:48

It’s a really nice very small little condo set up that’s perfect for one or two people.

  • 09:54

And it includes access to this amazing pool and the gym as well.

  • 09:59

It is a little way out of the main centre of the city which you can see on the horizon

  • 10:04

    over there.

  • 10:05

But we are a less than 5 minutes walk from an MRT station which means we can get to any

  • 10:09

part of the city we want in no time at all.

  • 10:11

And that was the 10 reasons why I love Bangkok.
