  • 00:08

    All aboard the Steampunk train.

  • 00:10

    Destination: fame and fortune!

  • 00:13

Steampunk has yet to have a true breakout success, but that simply means that there

  • 00:16

is a vacuum for the opportunistic writer to fill, like a gaseous substance of some kind.

  • 00:22

    Hmm.

  • 00:23

Steampunk is great to write because we can finally flex our descriptive muscles and play

  • 00:27

dress up with our characters and setting.

  • 00:29

As a visual aesthetic for our world, Steampunk is a great way to flavor a setting and can

  • 00:33

open the vast possibilities human imagination, ingenuity, inventiveness, and other words

  • 00:38

    that start with I.

  • 00:40

Now just let me put on my steampunk goggles and there!

  • 00:43

Now we are ready for a deep dive into the Steampunk genre!

  • 00:47

Now the first thing we should start with in our steampunk setting is the plot and more

  • 00:51

    importantly the characters.

  • 00:52

We should put a lot of effort into characteriza… oh wow that steam engine sure looks cool!

  • 00:57

It wouldn’t be steampunk without the steam!

  • 00:59

One surefire way to let the audience know that this is indeed a steampunk setting is

  • 01:03

by sticking hissing steam valves everywhere!

  • 01:06

Steam powered engines, steam powered ships, steam powered airships, steam powered rifles,

  • 01:11

steam powered zombies, steam powered robots, steam powered top hats, steam powered steam.

  • 01:16

In addition to hissing steam valves, we also need lots of cogs and gears.

  • 01:20

Just haphazardly paste those on everything.

  • 01:22

Who cares if they serve no function as long as they look cool.

  • 01:26

    Not too many gears though.

  • 01:27

Otherwise the story turns into clock punk.

  • 01:29

Now the central conceit of steampunk is why technology never advanced beyond steam.

  • 01:34

Apparently big steam keeps the poor defenseless oil companies down.

  • 01:37

Who will stick up for the little guy?

  • 01:39

Can’t let our tech be fueled by oil, otherwise the story turns into Diesel Punk.

  • 01:44

Or just don’t bother to justify the tech at all.

  • 01:47

    Internal combustion?

  • 01:48

    Preposterous.

  • 01:49

You can’t power things with explosions.

  • 01:50

I’m sure lugging around that huge boiler to power steampunk gear won’t get heavy

  • 01:54

and that wood and coal will easily scale to fuel ever growing industry and infrastructure.

  • 01:58

I guess we could say that everything is fueled by some kind of miracle substance.

  • 02:02

    I’ll call it contrivium.

  • 02:05

This special substance can cover any plot hole no matter how large and exempts a writer

  • 02:08

    from all research.

  • 02:10

It might as well be magical technology.

  • 02:12

But not too much magic tech, otherwise the story turns into Gaslight Fantasy.

  • 02:15

    Wait a minute.

  • 02:16

Wasn’t I working on something else important?

  • 02:19

    Oh yes.

  • 02:20

    Characters.

  • 02:21

I almost forgot to focus on creating believable, engaging, and wonderful characters to really

  • 02:24

hook the audience into the story.

  • 02:26

I should really dig into how the divergent technology of the setting would affect society

  • 02:29

and how that would shape the character’s... oh wait!

  • 02:32

I should set the story in the Victorian Age!

  • 02:34

We can dress our characters up in cool Victorian dresses and suits and then tack on some steampunk

  • 02:39

gear just like all of those amazing cosplayers at the conventions.

  • 02:42

    Don’t forget the goggles!

  • 02:44

    Those are essential.

  • 02:45

A monocle is a viable alternative, but not for the main character.

  • 02:49

In fiction only snobbish, rich dudes and evil military officers wear monocles.

  • 02:53

Now that we have dressed up our characters, we can finally work on fleshing them out.

  • 02:57

It is really important that we give them a variety of character traits that fit with…

  • 03:01

    oh no.

  • 03:02

    I spotted a problem.

  • 03:03

Turns out that the actual Victorian Era had a lot of, shall we say ‘unpleasant realities’.

  • 03:07

The slave trade, classism, racism, child labor, meat plant workers falling into the grinder

  • 03:13

due to no safety regulations, and good old-fashioned imperialism.

  • 03:17

How can a writer deal with all of those when designing the plot and setting?

  • 03:20

We could use one or more of the Victorian Era’s darker elements and make them central

  • 03:24

to the story’s theme or primary conflict.

  • 03:27

Having the main character embody the spirit of discovery, humanism, and true science could

  • 03:30

make for a dramatic contrast to the soulless industrial machine controlled by a short sighted

  • 03:35

    and greedy high society.

  • 03:37

Our protagonists would be willing to get their hands dirty in order to help others, but I’m

  • 03:41

    not.

  • 03:42

Writing about the ills of industrialization sounds unpleasant and more importantly, might

  • 03:45

require actual work because I would have to read up on some of the real history of industrialization.

  • 03:50

I have a much better idea.

  • 03:52

Let’s take all of those complex historical and culture issues, and just ignored them!

  • 03:56

Let’s scrub the Victorian Era of all of its problems.

  • 04:00

    There.

  • 04:01

    Nice and clean and PG-13.

  • 04:03

    Okay.

  • 04:04

    I cleaned up the setting.

  • 04:06

Nothing like taking the punk out of steampunk.

  • 04:07

    Now what was I doing?

  • 04:08

    Oh right.

  • 04:09

    Now I remember.

  • 04:10

I was making amazing characters who mesh seamlessly with the story’s themes and … oh hey!

  • 04:15

I should give my characters some really cool steampunk devices that grant them awesome

  • 04:18

    powers!

  • 04:19

Unlike a lot of genres, steampunk frequently features heroic scientist characters.

  • 04:24

And no, not actual peer reviewed, control group, really sit down and compare evidence

  • 04:29

to support a central hypothesis science.

  • 04:31

    Nope.

  • 04:32

This is SCIENCE in all caps with full reverb.

  • 04:37

Our scientist hero can instantly create amazing devices that completely break the laws of

  • 04:41

    physics.

  • 04:42

From ray guns to jet packs, our scientist hero can build it so long as the writer is

  • 04:45

    vague about the scientist’s doctorate.

  • 04:47

Our scientist hero is opposed by a mad scientist antagonist, who unlike the good scientist,

  • 04:51

only wants to use his powers for petty self gain or is just insane.

  • 04:55

I wonder how the mad scientist got his doctorate?

  • 04:58

Seems the mad part would get in the way of the science part.

  • 05:01

But let’s not focus on that.

  • 05:03

Instead, we need a way for our steampunk heroes to get around.

  • 05:06

A real steam powered invention was the locomotive.

  • 05:09

This powerful and practical machine should be completely ignored so our characters can

  • 05:12

instead fly on totally safe and not at all explosive dirigibles.

  • 05:17

These airships will completely revolutionize travel and logistics within a setting which

  • 05:21

is why they should be throw into the story without any thought.

  • 05:24

Airships are great tools for our characters to strike out into the frontier as they push

  • 05:28

forward into uncharted and strange lands.

  • 05:31

This contrast between the savage wilds and industrial sprawl can be an excellent well

  • 05:34

of conflict, but not too much wild west themed frontier exploration otherwise the story turns

  • 05:40

    into Cattle Punk.

  • 05:41

    Okay.

  • 05:42

    I need to slow down.

  • 05:43

What is wrong with this Steampunk story?

  • 05:45

I can’t seem to figure it out.

  • 05:47

I’ve glued gears and cogs on everything, copy and pasted the Victorian Era and added

  • 05:52

    in a ton of airships.

  • 05:53

    Oh.

  • 05:54

    I see.

  • 05:55

I forget to focus on characters and story.

  • 05:57

The plot is a complete wreak and the characters are poorly thought out and flat, but I don’t

  • 06:01

see how that matters when I have giant brass robots fighting super scientists with wind

  • 06:05

    up jet packs.

  • 06:06

You know, I really don’t feel like fixing the story and characters.

  • 06:09

    I don’t think it matters.

  • 06:10

That is what Steampunk is really for, a crutch to prop up crappy plot and characters.

  • 06:15

Those handy steampunk toys are great for distracting the audience from the utter lack of resonate

  • 06:19

themes and a cast that has one personality trait a piece.

  • 06:22

It is important to stay true to the core genre conventions of steampunk and adapt the story

  • 06:26

to the setting even if it comes at the cost of the story.

  • 06:29

And if critics point out your paper thin characters and plot with more holes than Swiss cheese,

  • 06:34

then just give them a snarky comeback, but not too much snark otherwise the story turns

  • 06:38

into an episode of Terrible Writing Advice.

  • 06:43

Normally this is the part of the video where I would have a sponsor, but I have decided

  • 06:47
