Is it possible to fully realise the Self? (with subtitles)

  • 00:04

Is it really possible to fully realise the Self?

  • 00:15

    [Questioner] Hi Mooji.

  • 00:22

[Q.] I'd like to know if it is really possible to fully realise the Self,

  • 00:27

[Q.] because so many books and teachers speak about it,

  • 00:31

[Q.] yet so few ordinary people,

  • 00:35

[Q.] even if they are spiritual and they meditate,

  • 00:39

[Q.] realise it completely, to be beyond doubt and beyond trouble.

  • 00:43

[Q.] So is it really possible? [M.] Of course it is possible.

  • 00:47

[Q.] But what makes the difference?

  • 00:50

    [M.] It is 100% possible! 100% possible.

  • 00:53

First of all, because we are already the Self. We must be clear about it!

  • 00:59

[Q.] But we are not aware of that. [M.] But this is it.

  • 01:03

[M.] We are 100% the Self, but we are unaware of it.

  • 01:06

We are unaware that we are That.

  • 01:09

How do we come to be unaware of it?

  • 01:13

It seems as though, when consciousness, in its pure expression ...

  • 01:19

    The pure expression of consciousness

  • 01:21

    announces itself inside this body

  • 01:24

as that feeling or that sense, 'I am'.

  • 01:29

I also refer to it as the godly principle within the form, 'I am'.

  • 01:35

    That I-am-ness itself

  • 01:38

is the dynamic expression of the Self, of the Absolute.

  • 01:43

When we say 'I', 'I' really means 'I am' or consciousness,

  • 01:50

    it is synonymous with consciousness.

  • 01:53

It is not a person. How did the person idea come into play?

  • 01:57

Somehow when consciousness is identified with the instrument,

  • 02:03

through which it can manifest and taste experiencing,

  • 02:09

somehow it gets confused and identified with the instrument,

  • 02:13

and takes the instrument to be what it is.

  • 02:16

Then the sense of separation, individuality and autonomy comes into play.

  • 02:23

It is this secondary identification which we call a person,

  • 02:30

a single entity, that comes into confusion.

  • 02:34

This entity is itself an expression of that pure consciousness.

  • 02:39

It is the way in which consciousness goes into role-play

  • 02:42

and appears to be the body that it is experiencing through.

  • 02:46

This has to be clearly understood. That's the first thing.

  • 02:50

[Q.] But this is like a theory ...

  • 02:53

[M.] No. We say it is the theory, but only if you leave it like this.

  • 02:57

If you leave it in your ears, it will become a theory.

  • 03:01

If you bring it into contemplation, so that you grasp it,

  • 03:06

if you trust the words, if you trust the one who is speaking to you ...

  • 03:10

I cannot tell you how to do this, it must be there or not.

  • 03:14

If you have a sense that this is the beginning of understanding,

  • 03:18

then you must bring those words deeper into a place of contemplation.

  • 03:23

Firstly, you say 'I'. You say, 'This is my camera'.

  • 03:34

You don't say, 'It is me'.

  • 03:36

'My' means 'my possession', meaning that it belongs to me.

  • 03:41

'My camera' - I am not the camera.

  • 03:45

    You also say, 'My senses'.

  • 03:51

If the sense in the left ear is weaker than in the right ear,

  • 03:55

    something is aware of it.

  • 03:58

Something says, 'My hearing is not good on this side'.

  • 04:01

It observes hearing, so you are not the hearing.

  • 04:05

I can include any other sense in this:

  • 04:08

I am not the taste, I am not the tongue, I am not the feeling,

  • 04:12

because I am aware of them - 'My feelings'.

  • 04:15

'My sight is weaker than it was ...'

  • 04:19

Even when you say, 'My memory',

  • 04:22

something is aware of memory, you are not your memory.

  • 04:25

And so much of the idea of your identity is contained in memory,

  • 04:30

yet something can speak of, 'My memory'

  • 04:32

which means I am apart from memory.

  • 04:35

    You say, 'My ego'.

  • 04:39

Ego also you are not. You are the observer of that.

  • 04:42

Some people say, 'I have got a very big ego'.

  • 04:46

Some say, 'I have got a little ego'.

  • 04:49

Some say, 'I have got no ego'. [laughs] Who speaks these things?

  • 04:54

Still, something is aware, earlier than ego, that says 'I'.

  • 04:58

It can also say, 'My life'. It can also say, 'My intellect'.

  • 05:05

It can say, 'My intellectual capacity

  • 05:08

was much sharper a few years ago, and now it is dimming'.

  • 05:12

    What witnesses intellect also?

  • 05:14

So like this you can go through everything.

  • 05:17

You can say, 'My life! My family, my possessions.'

  • 05:22

You can also say, 'My belief'. Belief you are not.

  • 05:25

    'My religion', 'My practice'.

  • 05:30

Some say, 'I don't believe in duality'.

  • 05:35

    Some say, 'I don't believe in non-duality'.

  • 05:41

These are mere concepts. You may say, 'My concepts'.

  • 05:44

Who is this 'I'? One must begin to contemplate.

  • 05:48

If you can leave all these aside, 'I' is still shining by itself.

  • 05:54

If this 'I' does not connect with any other association ...

  • 06:00

When the attention itself, which sprouts in 'I',

  • 06:04

when that attention incubates in the sensation 'I am',

  • 06:11

and doesn't connect, doesn't follow anything else,

  • 06:16

then this already will begin to manifest some deep insight

  • 06:20

    and conviction inside yourself.

  • 06:22

Try it and see! Try it and see.

  • 06:34

Where is that 'I' which looks through the eye?

  • 06:44

    Find out!
