What's up guys i'm ben from authentech

  • 00:01

And this is the insta 360 ONER now I already reviewed the 4k and the 360 mod

  • 00:08

You can check that video out later

  • 00:09

But today we're going to be checking out this one-inch sensor that a lot of people are intrigued about now

  • 00:15

Is it a game-changer? Let me spoil the ending for you and it's okay for certain people in certain

  • 00:22

Situations the one-inch mod will it's gonna be awesome. It might be the perfect fit but for the average consumer out there

  • 00:28

I'm not sure if it's worth spending those extra dollars

  • 00:31

Let me show you why quick disclaimer no sponsorship here

  • 00:34

but huge things to insta 360 for sending me these sample units to test all

  • 00:39

Firmwares and software's are still constantly being tweaked nowadays

  • 00:43

so if anything looks a little bit off on the 1r well

  • 00:46

It might be fixed just around the corner who knows in this video

  • 00:49

I'll show you guys side-by-side comparisons daytime and low-light photos and video HDR

  • 00:55

stabilization audio tests slow-motion hyperlapse and more of the 1r one inch

  • 01:02

versus the GoPro Hero eight and another quick spoiler alert

  • 01:05

If you're looking for just an ordinary action camera shooting flat photos and videos

  • 01:10

    well

  • 01:11

Then the GoPro probably is gonna be your better bet but and that's a huge but if you want to shoot 360 have future modularity

  • 01:19

Potential reverse the screen for selfie shots wireless mic options. Okay, so you can see where this might be going

  • 01:26

This is why there's always more to the story

  • 01:28

So let's dive right in starting with the pricing as this as the context in step 361 our one inch Edition buy

  • 01:36

Right now at five hundred and fifty dollars the GoPro Hero eights black

  • 01:41

$400 that's actually a pretty big difference now. Let's jump into some daytime video comparisons

  • 01:47

This is 5.3 K 30fps on the one inch and 4k thirty on the GoPro a few things

  • 01:54

I noticed right off the bat the GoPro consistently has more contrast and saturation

  • 01:59

Look some people like this some people don't the 1r allows you to turn on a color plus option which adds some new

  • 02:06

Vibrancy and dynamic range to your shots in this one. I left it off so you can see more of the

  • 02:12

Original video clip next to the default settings on the GoPro now

  • 02:16

Sometimes I like the poppy colors and contrasts of the GoPro, but sometimes it does it a bit too far

  • 02:22

For example, the shadows can be a bit too crushed and we can lose important details now one quick note

  • 02:27

Remember how I said the firmwares are constantly getting pushed out for the one-inch right now

  • 02:32

Well currently if I export a 5.3 K video file from the 1r onto my phone and then export it

  • 02:39

well, it doesn't come out as

  • 02:41

5.3 K res, but it's 4k now if I try their desktop app on the Mac, I can export the video and h.265

  • 02:49

5.3 K res video, which is good

  • 02:52

So for transparencies sake all my 5.3 K res files are gonna be scaled down to 4 K files

  • 02:58

Which honestly they look really good and sharp

  • 03:01

But this way we can actually see some good stabilization on the 1 inch since I'm pretty sure that stabilization is being processed

  • 03:08

After the clip is recorded speaking of clarity. If you're exporting clips to the garbage compression. Let's say of Instagram

  • 03:16

No one is probably ever gonna notice the difference from 5.3 K to 4k 2. Whatever

  • 03:21

    however

  • 03:22

if you're watching this video in full 4k

  • 03:25

You should be able to spot some of these nice little

  • 03:28

Differences the 1 inch looks razor sharp and crispy if we freeze frame and zoom in you should be able to see what I'm talking

  • 03:35

About it's not like it's jumping from sd up to HD

  • 03:39

But it is a nice improvement and step up in the 1 inch sensor on a negative note. I notice there's a fair bit of

  • 03:46

Artifacting on the 1 inch footage but again, I'm unsure if this is just a temporary compression issue

  • 03:51

And hopefully we'll see a fix in a firmware or app update soon jump into stabilization, even though they both look pretty smooth

  • 03:59

I think I'd have to vote the GoPro as a bit more buttery smooth the 1 inch isn't bad and honestly has a wider field

  • 04:06

    of view here

  • 04:07

But man GoPro has really put some nice RND into their hyper smooth

  • 04:12

Stabilization and it almost looks like it was shot on a gimbal which is always very impressive

  • 04:17

instance flow state isn't bad at all and honestly usually really impressive especially when shooting in 360 but here the one

  • 04:25

It looks like some firmware updates could help it out a bit

  • 04:28

This is audio on the incent 361 are with the one-inch

  • 04:33

How does the audio sound and this is audio on the GoPro Hero 8 black. How does the audio sound?

  • 04:42

Now it's pretty windy out here down at the lake. Which one is sounding better

  • 04:48

Now it's pretty windy out here down at the lake which one is sounding better funny enough

  • 04:55

I think both receive like a b-minus here in one sentence the one R sounds better, but then the next GoPro sounds better

  • 05:04

Audio test one two three four

  • 05:09

Audio test one two and three four

  • 05:13

Now the one R wins in two other big audio categories first

  • 05:17

They offer this USB seat a three-and-a-half millimeter mic jack dongle for only ten bucks

  • 05:22

So that way you can use any third-party audio microphone very sweet

  • 05:26

If you're considering the go pro audio Bodwell, they're still not even out yet. And that's gonna cost you $80

  • 05:32

That's absurd and way too expensive. I've been experimenting with the road wireless go microphones on the 1r and so far

  • 05:39

I've been really pleased the second big feature that inste is saying is coming in February is wireless Bluetooth audio now

  • 05:47

Imagine popping in your air pods or whatever. I'm recording audio directly from there to the camera wirelessly bluetooth

  • 05:54

    That would be pretty sweet

  • 05:55

I tried a quick ultra wide field-of-view test and surprisingly the GoPro superview actually looked wider

  • 06:02

Plus, let's notice. My skin tones of the 1r is jacking up my skin pretty bad

  • 06:07

There's a little bit too magenta in the blacks and my coat as well

  • 06:10

The GoPro is far from perfect. But looking better in this shot. Here's a quick 4k 60fps

  • 06:17

    comparison and

  • 06:18

Another win for the GoPro its field of view is wider

  • 06:21

Which is nice and makes a big difference plus the stability and sharpness of resolution

  • 06:26

I think it looks much better here as well with the one-inch. We can max out slow-motion 1080p

  • 06:32

120 fps the GoPro can double this up to

  • 06:36

240 FPS at this 1080p res now. That's a big win for GoPro in this sample

  • 06:42

I'd say GoPro wins in terms of quality and I notice GoPros keep in a wider field of view again

  • 06:47

Which I think is a pretty big deal when you're shooting slow-motion

  • 06:51

Usually your subject is moving around very fast

  • 06:53

And it's easy to cut the subject out of camera frame like I did here on the one arm another thing to know oddly enough

  • 07:00

The sample clip from the 1r actually has some frame blending and motion interpolation

  • 07:05

Processing so it's like we can slow the clip down even more. However, it doesn't necessarily look fantastic

  • 07:11

But possibly better than glitching and stuttering like we can see here on the GoPro either way

  • 07:16

I'd vote GoPro the winner in this slow-motion test one of my favorite mode

  • 07:20

So play around with is hyperlapse and both the cameras offer this feature, though

  • 07:25

They do it quite a bit differently on the GoPro before we hit record

  • 07:29

we set the speed of playback from two times up to 30 times fast or my favorite I've talked about before there's auto mode where

  • 07:36

    the GoPro will

  • 07:37

Automatically determine your camera movement and other factors and then speed up or slow down time which ends up creating some really cool shots

  • 07:44

there's a button on the screen to enable real-time recording in the middle of the hyperlapse like you can see in this example on the

  • 07:51

    1r. It's slightly different

  • 07:52

They instead approach the idea of recording the whole clip at normal speed which results in much larger raw file sizes

  • 07:59

Then later in the app is where we can adjust the speed settings. This is nice on one hand

  • 08:04

It allows us to change the video file multiple times over slowing it down or speeding specific spots back up

  • 08:11

It allows us a lot more fine to control, which is nice on the other hand though

  • 08:16

I sort of like the GoPro mode as well

  • 08:18

It's a bit more hands-off just set it and forget it record your clip and that's it

  • 08:23

No going back changing anything. The video is locked in but it's ready for sharing

  • 08:27

There's pros and cons to each side in terms of quality, though

  • 08:30

Both of these files are 4k and we can turn on or off that motion blur. You're seen on the 1r again

  • 08:37

It's nice to have the option now for the big low-light video test and this is one area

  • 08:42

I think the one-inch mod really blows GoPro out of the water

  • 08:45

It's that larger sensor is going to help perform much better and lower light situations

  • 08:50

At least for video now not only does it of course look a bit brighter

  • 08:54

But even more importantly compare the amount of noise and grain between the two

  • 08:58

The one our one inch looks clean while the GoPro looks grainy noisy soft and blurry

  • 09:04

I also had a throw in the 1 ounce

  • 09:06

4k mod into the mix and this is one of those areas people were really wondering is the 1 inch really worth paying the extra?

  • 09:13

Money for well, hopefully this comparison can help you out in this low-light video test

  • 09:18

We can clearly see the big quality bump from the 4k mod up to the 1 inch

  • 09:22

Even I didn't know if there'd be that much of a difference but here it sure looks like it now

  • 09:27

This is some low-light video and 5.3 K on the 1r with indoor

  • 09:33

stabilization so they say it should help with some of the motion blur but the noise I'm guessing the ISO game is

  • 09:40

Going up a little bit. So how did the two look and compare again?

  • 09:45

The 1 inch mod is looking much better with brighter exposure cleaner image and less noise Plus that low-light

  • 09:51

Stabilization checkbox actually seems to help as its stability and motion blur looks much better over the GoPro

  • 09:57

This is a pretty big deal for some people out there. If you're needing an action camera in low-light conditions

  • 10:03

    well

  • 10:03

the one inch model might be much better for you over a GoPro snapping a few low-light photos is very

  • 10:09

Interesting and yielding some different results in this first shot GoPros white balance looks much more accurate with the comforter

  • 10:16

It's actually white in real life zooming in 400% the GoPro looks the noisiest and pixelated

  • 10:23

However, the 4k wide mod is in last place and the one inches. Okay, but not amazing

  • 10:28

This next shot has some more the same results

  • 10:31

Now if the one inch could produce better white balance and lean away from those strong red hues

  • 10:36

Then I'd say it'd be a clear winner funny enough. Our phones are getting much better in low light photography

  • 10:42

So I toss in a few iPhone 11 pro night shots

  • 10:45

I've talked about this before the iPhone does not allow long exposure night shots and the ultra wide lens though

  • 10:51

    It does on the primary

  • 10:53

Anyway here you can see the results and it's doing a fantastic job of bright exposure

  • 10:58

Dynamic range and good noise control two more very low light shots and we can see them Genta glitch

  • 11:04

I'll call it on the one inch though. It was a clean low noise image, which is nice

  • 11:08

The gopro isn't terrible and actually producing a usable shot and the iphones night mode looks pretty good

  • 11:14

This shot was almost in the pitch black and the one-inch basically failed GoPro

  • 11:20

surprisingly wins with a nice long exposure and the iPhone is the

  • 11:23

Brightest, but it missed focus or it's just way too blurry and that's sort of unfortunate

  • 11:28

here's some daytime photo samples with some harsh contrast II lighting and my eye is

  • 11:33

    consistently drawn to the one-inch

  • 11:35

Some of these are HDR some are just standard photos with color plus tone mapping turned on and these shots

  • 11:41

Honestly, look just as good as the HDR once now on the GoPro

  • 11:45

I use their new super photo mode and in almost every shot. I prefer the one-inch

  • 11:50

Well, except this last one they both botched up my skin color pretty bad now

  • 11:55

Let's switch over to a few other categories of comparison there sometimes or just as important as image quality for mounting options

  • 12:02

I think I like the GoPro better

  • 12:04

And here's why at least they give you these

  • 12:07

Mounting fingers built right into the body they fold in if you want makes it nice and flush portable

  • 12:13

But then they fold down you can slide it into the standard GoPro mounting system even though it's so annoying

  • 12:20

I wish it was quarter-twenty tripod mount but there we go

  • 12:23

You're up and away with the 1r with the one-inch mod

  • 12:28

We have to screw this whole front glass off

  • 12:32

Slide it into the mount clip that on

  • 12:36

it has the mounting fingers here for standard GoPro mounts and then screw this thing back on and

  • 12:42

Then reverse it for every single time you want to take it off. It's just super inconvenient

  • 12:47

I really wish the 1r had a quarter twenty tripod mount built right in now

  • 12:53

I did see they have that extended battery pack coming out soon with the mounting fingers like the GoPro

  • 13:00

That looks like a nice module to have but until then

  • 13:05

GoPro wins right now for mounting convenience two quick things to mention. Look at the boot up times. There's one arm

  • 13:12

    Go

  • 13:13

    after

  • 13:16

GoPro is up and ready to shoot and there we go

  • 13:20

So the GoPros faster to boot up and then as for screen brightness, well, it's sort of hard to tell out here

  • 13:27

But we're in the bright sunlight and honestly the 1r does a nice job even though it's screen is much smaller

  • 13:35

    But they're both fairly bright

  • 13:37

In daytime so we can see sunlight

  • 13:41

For exposure and tweaking settings. So both screens are nice and bright

  • 13:46

However, the GoPros is much larger

  • 13:48

Which is nice but on the other hand and it's a big win for the 1r

  • 13:52

We can simply break it apart

  • 13:54

Flip the screen around and now we have a selfie screen if you want to do that on the GoPro

  • 13:59

Well, you're gonna have to shell out the pretty penny of

  • 14:03

$80 for that media mod and then another $80 on top of that for the display mod, so

  • 14:09

$160 just for that feels a little steep for durability

  • 14:12

    well

  • 14:13

I don't have the guts to be dropping these from great heights nor do I have the money I sort of baby these things like

  • 14:18

My firstborn but I do say that the 1r, it feels tight and rigid when it's all clicked together and it's modular

  • 14:25

So if something were to break down the road I can replace just that part and the GoPros

  • 14:31

Well, its biggest fail this year was taking away that replaceable glass protector that they had years ago, honestly

  • 14:38

It's a big deal breaker for many it almost seems like they're trying to get us to pay for that extra GoPro a plus

  • 14:44

Replacement program another big deal that compared our mobile apps and workflow now, don't worry. I'll keep this one short and sweet

  • 14:51

It's a big win I say for the in so 360

  • 14:54

I love their mobile app way more than GoPros in so offers way more editing features

  • 15:00

Plus it's faster to connect smoother and more efficient to scrub through the files over Wi-Fi

  • 15:05

trim edit export and share now funny enough on the flip side of that insta 360 is recording these video files in a dot I

  • 15:13

Nsv file format. I think it's their proprietary file either way

  • 15:18

They're not in dot MOV s or mpegs and this could be a really big deal breaker for a lot of people out there

  • 15:24

So if you're editing just simply on the mobile not a big deal

  • 15:28

But if you're like me and you need a copy these files over to your computer for final cut editing

  • 15:34

Well, then it has to go through a whole transcoding compression converting process, which is super inefficient

  • 15:40

    And I really dislike it

  • 15:42

I might have heard some rumors that insta 360 is pushing on an update down the road to fix this

  • 15:47

I'm not sure if you know any news drop a comment

  • 15:50

So I guess that's the irony of it all if you want the best mobile editing experience sharing right on the go

  • 15:56

Well, then insta might be your better bet

  • 15:58

however, if you're sort of old school and you need to edit in Final Cut or premier well

  • 16:02

Then you might need to go with GoPro at least until insta fixes out that issue

  • 16:06

And another big complaint I have is the minimum focusing distance

  • 16:10

On the one inch it might be a deal-breaker for me if I'm holding it here

  • 16:15

They say it's about one meter minimum focusing distance

  • 16:18

Well, I might be out of focus and then everything behind me is in focus sort of ruins the shot

  • 16:23

So if you're gonna be vlogging you have to make sure it's held up far enough so that you're in focus

  • 16:28

Just keep this in mind at the end of the day

  • 16:30

these are fun cameras and gadgets that are all but tools and toys helping us to capture memories and

  • 16:36

Moments to share with family and friends and clients

  • 16:39

now if the tool gets in the way of creation

  • 16:42

Then it has failed at its job for some people the one arse modular design

  • 16:47

Future expansion and sweet mobile editing workflow that reversible screen that great audio options

  • 16:54

It might be the perfect match for you. And then maybe consider this one inch mod

  • 16:58

If you need some solid low-light performance

  • 17:00

Or that extra bump up in resolution and clarity if however you just need something simple and easy and old-school

  • 17:08

durable run and gun shooting flat and only flat photos and videos

  • 17:12

    well

  • 17:13

then the GoPro Hero 8 black still performs fantastically well in a lot of

  • 17:18

Situations plus that price point isn't horrible

  • 17:21

If you don't care about external audio or a reversible screen or replaceable lens, its photos and videos look smooth

  • 17:28

And it's punchy and it should be able to capture some beautiful moments for you now

  • 17:33

Let me know which one you lean more towards and why down in the comments and drop any questions you have

  • 17:38

I'll try my best to respond until I see you next time. Let's live authentic
