  • 00:00

Now, we all struggle to forgive from time to time, but is there, in fact, a sin which

  • 00:06

even God himself finds difficult to forgive?

  • 00:11

Padre Pio said, "Yes, there is," but then immediately after that added that God also

  • 00:18

knows how to wait, so please do join us for this video.

  • 00:25

Good evening, friends, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to this channel Following Padre

  • 00:33

    Pio.

  • 00:35

Here we have a series of short stories on the life of our incredible saint, so we investigate

  • 00:40

    his life.

  • 00:41

    He's a Capuchin friar, he's a mystic, a tremendous miracle worker.

  • 00:46

Do stay tuned to find out more about him, and to see what Padre Pio's intercession can

  • 00:52

    do for you.

  • 00:54

We do ask everyone to be part of this Padre Pio postulate, and you will really help us

  • 00:59

if you like the video, and you share the video with your friends and colleagues.

  • 01:04

Just a brief reminder that every Friday, we do have a Mass in which we bring your intentions

  • 01:10

to Padre Pio in this Mass.

  • 01:11

So, it's dedicated to Padre Pio, and to be part of this, all you have to do is enroll

  • 01:16

your intentions, and you can see the video on the end screen how to do that.

  • 01:21

Now, just a thought today, the more we thank God, and have gratitude for God, for what

  • 01:28

    he has done for us.

  • 01:29

The more, in fact, we create the conditions for further blessings.

  • 01:35

In this story, Adolfo Affatato was one of the last remaining or surviving spiritual

  • 01:43

    sons of Padre Pio.

  • 01:45

He was now 82 years old, and yet despite this, he continued his ministry of speaking and

  • 01:52

    writing about Padre Pio.

  • 01:54

This story is taken from one of his books, and he tells us that gratitude was a very

  • 02:02

    important thing to Padre Pio.

  • 02:05

    He spoke of it often.

  • 02:09

One evening, Adolfo asked Padre Pio if God forgives all sins?

  • 02:14

Padre Pio answered, "My son, God is a very good father, and he forgives everyone, yet

  • 02:23

there is one sin that he does have difficulty forgiving, the ingratitude of man."

  • 02:31

So, perhaps God has shown some incredible generosity to your or to I, in order to help

  • 02:38

    us to convert.

  • 02:39

Yet, our hearts remain obstinate and hardened.

  • 02:43

So, what must God do then?

  • 02:47

Then Padre Pio added, "But he does know how to wait," so that is the secret.

  • 02:54

What we're going to look at here is one of Padre Pio's missions that God had entrusted

  • 02:59

to him was that of bringing back the lost sheep into the fold.

  • 03:05

One day, Adolfo was asked to accompany a certain politician who now wished to visit and to

  • 03:11

meet with Padre Pio, and so he went off to Foggia, the town about 40 kilometers away,

  • 03:17

and he met this politician at the train station.

  • 03:20

Then after that, they went for a little lunch somewhere, and they started speaking.

  • 03:25

His new friend spoke in a manner that struck Adolfo as full of presumption, quite a proud

  • 03:32

person, and he came across as one who felt that he could just do whatever he wanted.

  • 03:39

So, is there anything new under the sun, a politician for whom everything is relative

  • 03:44

    and up for grabs?

  • 03:46

He went on to say that in his lifetime, in fact, he had made three vows to God, and that

  • 03:53

he had never even kept one of them.

  • 03:55

So, this was being spoken over lunch between Adolfo and the politician, Padre Pio had nothing

  • 04:01

    to do with this.

  • 04:03

But now the politician had heard of Padre Pio, and he wished to place himself under

  • 04:07

    the Capuchin's direction.

  • 04:09

So, then later on, they now finished their meal, they went through to the friary, San

  • 04:15

Giovanni Rotondo, Adolfo and the politician then went up the stairs to wait for Padre

  • 04:21

    Pio.

  • 04:22

Padre Pio was obviously praying in his cell, in his little room.

  • 04:25

When he did come out of his cell to go downstairs, it was now time for the men's confession.

  • 04:31

Padre Pio said, "Praise be to Jesus," so that was his usual custom, and then turning to

  • 04:37

Adolfo he said, "Who is this you have today?"

  • 04:41

Adolfo responded, "Father, this gentleman would like your blessing."

  • 04:46

Instead, Padre Pio said, "Nice stuff you brought me here, tell him that he made a vow three

  • 04:53

times, and three times he failed to keep it, and this is now the last chance God is giving

  • 05:00

him, and that he should go before the blessed sacrament and should ask for forgiveness for

  • 05:07

    his sins."

  • 05:09

Then without even greeting the politician, Padre Pio proceeded downstairs to hear their

  • 05:15

    confessions.

  • 05:16

These days, we certainly hear a lot about the need for pastoral accompaniment of the

  • 05:23

    sinner.

  • 05:24

But are these some sort of magical or talismanic words, accompaniment, that gets everyone into

  • 05:31

    heaven free?

  • 05:32

Let us suppose a person is the most radical pro-abortion advocate that there is, are we

  • 05:39

just expected to pastorally accompany them?

  • 05:43

What would Padre Pio's view of this be?

  • 05:45

Let's have a look and see how Padre Pio accompanies.

  • 05:50

Now, Padre Pio hadn't even greeted the politician, and he went straight downstairs, and Adolfo

  • 05:55

    was struck by this.

  • 05:57

So, Padre Pio had not given the impression that everything is okay, he was perhaps a

  • 06:02

    little bit rude in this.

  • 06:03

Yet, it was another episode of one of the many in which Adolfo experienced first-hand

  • 06:11

the supernatural gifts of Padre Pio.

  • 06:15

Although Adolfo usually experienced the very endearing, and the paternal side of Padre

  • 06:21

Pio, here he was seeing the other side, the harsh side, in which Padre Pio was being stern

  • 06:28

towards those who had sinned, and were sinning against God, and neglected their duties as

  • 06:34

    a Christian.

  • 06:37

No one except the politician, of course, and Padre Pio knew exactly what these sins were,

  • 06:43

what he was guilty of, the vows he had broken, anything like that.

  • 06:47

But Padre Pio had this special gift, he could read the souls, and he could see what others

  • 06:53

    could not see.

  • 06:54

At this point, Adolfo sensed an icy emptiness that had just overcome the politician, and

  • 07:03

he watched as the politician then broke down in tears, because he was now facing a crisis

  • 07:09

    of his redemption.

  • 07:12

Well, later on a Father Honorato told Adolfo that he asked Padre Pio about this incident,

  • 07:18

had he not been too harsh with a politician?

  • 07:23

Without even a hesitation, Padre Pio responded, "If you could scrutinize souls, you would've

  • 07:32

seen that in that man's heart there were not just seven deadly sins, but 70."

  • 07:40

Then Padre Pio pointed to a glass of water right there on the table, said, "Do you see

  • 07:45

    this glass full of water?

  • 07:48

If you don't empty it of its filth and fill it with God's love, there will never be peace."

  • 07:56

It's a two-part process, getting rid of the filth, and then filling in with God's love.

  • 08:02

Adolfo later heard that after that encounter, the politician had begun now to radically

  • 08:08

    change his life.

  • 08:10

The doors of his heart, which had been so blocked by pride, possessions, and all of

  • 08:15

that, they were now open, and he was filled with charity.

  • 08:22

Through this intervention, the time for God's action had now arrived.

  • 08:27

The politician repented and converted, and as Padre Pio said, "God knows how to wait."

  • 08:36

This had proved to be so true.

  • 08:40

Next time on this channel, we're going to see where Padre Pio grew up, his hometown,

  • 08:46

    and also his home environment.

  • 08:47

So, these things that produce the great saint that we have, please do join us for that talk.
