  • 00:07

Not long ago, actually watching something being ripped apart as it falls towards a giant

  • 00:13

black hole would be science fiction.

  • 00:16

But this is becoming reality for astronomers using ESO’s Very Large Telescope.

  • 00:25

Observers under dark skies, far from the bright city lights, can marvel at the splendor of

  • 00:34

the Milky Way, arching in an imposing band across the sky.

  • 00:38

Zooming in towards the center of our galaxy, about 25000 light years away, you can see

  • 00:44

that it is composed of myriads of stars.

  • 00:48

This is a pretty impressive sight, but much is hidden from view by interstellar dust,

  • 00:53

and astronomers need to look using a different wavelength, the infrared, that can penetrate

  • 00:57

    the dust clouds.

  • 00:59

With large telescopes, astronomers can then see in detail the swarm of stars circling

  • 01:04

the supermassive black hole, in the same way that the Earth orbits the Sun.

  • 01:10

The Galactic Center harbors the closest supermassive black hole known, and the one that is also

  • 01:15

the largest in terms of its angular diameter on the sky, making it the best choice for

  • 01:21

a detailed study of black holes.

  • 01:25

This black hole’s mass is a hefty four million times that of the Sun, earning it the title

  • 01:32

    of supermassive black hole.

  • 01:34

Although it is huge, this black hole is currently supplied with little material and is not shining

  • 01:40

    brightly.

  • 01:41

But this is about to change.

  • 01:47

Using ESO’s Very Large Telescope, a team of astronomers has discovered a new object

  • 01:52

that is heading almost straight towards the black hole at vertiginous speed.

  • 01:57

The object is not a star, but a cloud of gas.

  • 02:01

“The cloud consists mainly of hydrogen gas, gas which we see anyhow in the galactic center

  • 02:07

    all over the place.

  • 02:09

This particular cloud weighs more or less three times the mass of Earth.

  • 02:12

So it’s a rather small and tiny blob only, but it glows very brightly in the light of

  • 02:18

the stars which are surrounding it .”

  • 02:23

As the astronomers watch, the cloud has been picking up pace as it gets closer to the giant

  • 02:28

    black hole.

  • 02:29

Its speed has doubled in the last seven years and it is now speeding towards the black hole

  • 02:34

at more than 8 million kilometers per hour.

  • 02:39

The astronomers have already seen the cloud’s outer layers becoming more and more disrupted

  • 02:44

over the last few years as it approaches the black hole.

  • 02:48

But the exciting part is yet to come.

  • 02:51

“The Black hole, imagine it sitting here, has a tremendous gravitational force and the

  • 02:57

cloud, as it comes in, it will be elongated and stretched, it will become essentially

  • 03:02

    like spaghetti.

  • 03:03

It will be elongated and falling into the black hole.”

  • 03:07

“The next few years will be really fantastic and exciting because we are probing the territory.

  • 03:12

Here this cloud comes and gets disrupted, but now it will begin to interact with the

  • 03:17

hot gas right around the black hole.

  • 03:19

We have never seen this before.”

  • 03:24

No one knows what will happen next.

  • 03:26

The cloud will probably heat up and may start to emit powerful X- rays as it gets disrupted.

  • 03:33

In the end the material will eventually disappear by falling into the black hole.

  • 03:37

For the scientists, this event is truly a unique chance to probe the hot gas around

  • 03:43

    the black hole.

  • 03:44

"But this process of how material gets into the black hole really is not clear to us we

  • 03:49

don’t understand it in any detail.

  • 03:50

And here in the galactic center we have an opportunity so to speak to have a probe of

  • 03:56

    this process.

  • 03:57

How material really gets added to the black hole, and what the physical processes are,

  • 04:01

how the interactions happen in this very central region.

  • 04:07

    That’s a fantastic opportunity."

  • 04:10

This is indeed science fiction becoming science fact.
