  • 00:00

Hello and welcome to Comic Drake, where I talk about comic books and my name is Drake!

  • 00:03

The Flash is the fastest man alive, but Superman also has super speed.

  • 00:09

So is it possible for the Last Son of Krypton to actually be faster than The Flash?

  • 00:14

    Let’s find out.

  • 00:25

So The Flash and Superman have actually raced in comics several times and when I say The

  • 00:30

Flash, I mean both of the most popular characters to have ever taken up the mantle, Barry Allen

  • 00:35

    and Wally West.

  • 00:37

In 1967, there were actually two races back to back in Superman #199 and The Flash #175.

  • 00:43

The first race was for charity, but rival crime syndicates places bets on the race and

  • 00:49

    tried sabotaging the competition.

  • 00:51

This would be a recurring theme in the Flash/Superman races since there’s never really a straight

  • 00:56

    track.

  • 00:57

There’s always stuff that goes wrong from people in peril to physical barriers to deliberate

  • 01:02

    foul play from third parties.

  • 01:04

Anyway, this first race ended in a tie with neither syndicate winning the bet.

  • 01:09

The second race took place just a few months later with the villains Abra Kadabra and Professor

  • 01:13

Zoom disguising themselves as powerful alien gamblers and forced The Flash and Superman

  • 01:19

to race under the threat of destroying the loser’s hometown.

  • 01:22

Now I bet you’re probably wondering “Why didn’t the Justice League step in?”

  • 01:27

Well that’s because they were taken down pretty much instantly.

  • 01:31

Anyway, Flash and Supes had to literally race THROUGH SPACE with Kadabra and Professor Zoom

  • 01:36

sabotaging the race, hoping to take out their nemeses in the process.

  • 01:39

They were defeated though and there was really no clear winner of the race.

  • 01:44

You see, depending on your perspective in relation to the Justice League’s 3D computer

  • 01:48

monitor, (It’s the sixties, what did you expect?)

  • 01:51

it looks like either racer was the winner and in a fourth wall breaking moment, the

  • 01:55

Justice League puts the question on us and they want to know who we thought won.

  • 02:00

Three years later, we received another race in World’s Finest #198 and #199 where the

  • 02:05

Guardians of the Universe set things up because robots called the Anachronids were moving

  • 02:10

at the speed of light and were disrupting the flow of time.

  • 02:13

That’s why they summoned Flash and Superman to run in the opposite direction to fix it…

  • 02:19

    Because comics.

  • 02:21

Flash decided to turn this into a race, thinking that the element of competition might help

  • 02:25

the two of them run even faster, but as you’ve expected by this point, shenanigans ensue

  • 02:31

with it ultimately culminating in both heroes severely having their powers drained, but

  • 02:36

still managing to destroy the Anachronids and preventing more from being created in

  • 02:40

    the future.

  • 02:42

On a technicality, The Flash won this race since he was able to crawl fast enough to

  • 02:47

    victory, but come on.

  • 02:48

Do you seriously expect me to count that?

  • 02:51

Eight years later, we had another race in DC Comics Presents #1 and #2, but this one

  • 02:57

is just…. bizarre and yes, that’s even including the last race which was literally

  • 03:02

through space to stop super speed robots.

  • 03:06

Okay so in this one, to two alien races are at war and they choose Flash and Superman

  • 03:11

to be their champions, threatening to blow up Earth and Krypton… before it actually

  • 03:18

    blew up.

  • 03:19

This causes Flash and Superman to literally race through time and it’s just weird.

  • 03:24

    It’s really REALLY weird.

  • 03:27

On another technicality, The Flash won, but again, this is not very satisfactory.

  • 03:32

Unfortunately though, Barry Allen seemingly died saving the multiverse in the event Crisis

  • 03:37

on Infinite Earths with the mantle of Flash being passed to Wally West who previously

  • 03:41

held the title of Kid Flash.

  • 03:44

Twelve years after the previous race, Wally stepped up to the plate in The Adventures

  • 03:48

of Superman #463 when the trickster, Mr. Mxyzptlk, came into the picture and before you guys

  • 03:54

start going into the comments saying that I didn’t pronounce Mxyzptlk properly, I

  • 03:58

want to let you know that I’m going off of the pronunciation of the animated series.

  • 04:02

    Fight me.

  • 04:05

    “It’s mix-yes-spit-lick.”

  • 04:09

Anyway, Mxie was causing trouble as always, but this time it was Flash to step in and

  • 04:17

    not Superman.

  • 04:18

After finding out that Wally’s whole thing is going fast though, Mxyzptlk decided to

  • 04:23

    force him to race Supes.

  • 04:24

Initially, neither one of them was on board, but when Superman thought that Wally was slower

  • 04:29

than Barry and therefore just assumed that he was faster, it.

  • 04:34

    was.

  • 04:35

    on!

  • 04:36

Well that and the fact that Wally didn’t want people to think that he was a “wimpy

  • 04:40

    weenie”.

  • 04:41

As always, this wasn’t a straight up race since Mr. Mxyzptlk threw several traps and

  • 04:46

obstacles at them, but at the end of the day, Wally was the winner straight up.

  • 04:50

Finally, a Flash had a definitive victory against Superman, but that was Wally.

  • 04:57

    What about Barry?

  • 04:58

Well, this debate was brought back nineteen years later along with Barry Allen who sort

  • 05:03

of came back from the dead.

  • 05:04

That’s right, in Flash: Rebirth #3, we got to see Barry and Superman race all over again.

  • 05:11

This wasn’t a formal race, but when trying to keep up with Barry, Supes remarked that

  • 05:15

the two of them had raced several times in the past and that Superman had actually won

  • 05:19

    a few times.

  • 05:20

Barry’s response was cold, stating that those races were for charity and then he INSTANTLY

  • 05:25

runs faster, leaving Superman in the dust.

  • 05:30

Without a doubt, this proves that both Barry and Wally are faster than the Big Blue Boy

  • 05:35

    Scout.

  • 05:36

Now, we actually had one more quick race right here in 2017 against Wally and Superman as

  • 05:41

they were the only two beings to have made it over past the universe altering event,

  • 05:45

    Flashpoint.

  • 05:46

However, this race was cut short and there wasn’t any sort of real winner, but it’s

  • 05:51

just a fun tidbit that I wanted to throw in for good measure.

  • 05:54

Now all I’ve done in this video is rattle off a bunch of races and their results, but

  • 05:58

why exactly ARE the Flashes faster than Superman?

  • 06:02

Well for that, we need to bust out our old friend, the map of the DC multiverse.

  • 06:07

As you can see, there are fifty two universes that exist in this space called The Bleed,

  • 06:11

but keeping it all together is the Speed Force Wall or as I explained it during my twenty

  • 06:17

first birthday party after several drinks…

  • 06:20

And the Speed Force goes around it.

  • 06:23

    Like encompasses all of it.

  • 06:25

    It’s the Speed Force Wall.

  • 06:26

    Look at this chart!

  • 06:28

Somehow somebody thought it would make sense…

  • 06:32

    Which doesn’t.

  • 06:34

If you want to learn more about the Speed Force is then I actually did an entire video

  • 06:37

on it, but in layman’s terms, the Speed Force is this barrier that encompases the

  • 06:42

entire DC multiverse and not only is it time itself, but it’s also all of the kinetic

  • 06:47

    energy in the entire multiverse.

  • 06:50

There are people who can draw upon these powers and they are called Speedsters and that’s

  • 06:53

    exactly what The Flash is.

  • 06:55

Superman might have super speed, but he’s not a Speedster, he’s just a guy that goes

  • 06:59

    really fast.

  • 07:00

Now don’t get me wrong, Superman is fast as hell.

  • 07:03

In fact, he’s probably one of the fastest non-Speedsters out there, but because he doesn’t

  • 07:08

utilize the Speed Force, Superman is NOT a Speedster and he is not as fast and never

  • 07:13

will be as fast The Flash.

  • 07:16

Hopefully this puts this debate to rest once and for all even though the comics have made

  • 07:20

it very obvious for years, but I do realize that pretty much all of you guys watching

  • 07:25

this right now don’t read comics.

  • 07:27

So I’m here to explain it for you.

  • 07:29

If you like this video then why not consider subscribing or leaving a comment, a like,

  • 07:33

    or even watching another one?

  • 07:34

I know every YouTuber says this, but it really does mean a lot.

  • 07:37

So if you like what you see then share it around and watch some more and hopefully we’ll

  • 07:41

grow even bigger and I can bring you even more videos right to your face on a more regular

  • 07:44

    basis in even higher quality.

  • 07:46

Thanks for watching, hopefully I’ll see you next time!
