Hi, I'm Vance and welcome to Repair and Replace.

  • 00:16

Appliances are somewhat simple machines, built from of a series of mechanical parts

  • 00:22

    and basic circuits.

  • 00:23

Knowing how these circuits work can help you understand why an appliance isn't working properly.

  • 00:30

In this episode we'll learn about the fundamentals of circuits and the 3 main ways that circuits fail.

  • 00:37

We'll look at short circuits, ground faults and open circuits.

  • 00:42

Now before starting its recommended to watch our "Multimeter & Electricity Basics" video

  • 00:48

This is linked in the description below.

  • 00:56

A circuit is a series of interconnected paths that carry an electric current.

  • 01:01

All circuits will have a power source, wires or conductors, a switch for controlling the

  • 01:07

circuit and a device or load that offers resistance to the circuit.

  • 01:13

The hot wire or line, carries the power to the load,

  • 01:17

and the neutral wire returns the electricity to the power source.

  • 01:22

The ground wire is usually green, and is connected to the metal appliance housing.

  • 01:27

This provides a safe path to return to the source and will protect against electrocution.

  • 01:39

All circuits need a continuous path to return to the source.

  • 01:43

This is continuity, or a closed circuit.

  • 01:48

If we disrupt this path with with rubber, plastic, or by air in the case of a broken wire,

  • 01:55

then the current will not flow as there is no continuity.

  • 01:59

    This is an open circuit.

  • 02:02

And this often happens when a component burns out or fails internally.

  • 02:07

Depending on the component, this might affect the whole appliance or just a particular function.

  • 02:14

For example if only one stove element stops working,

  • 02:18

then it's just an issue with that particular circuit.

  • 02:22

Now if all the heating elements are not working,

  • 02:25

then its likely an issue with the incoming power.

  • 02:29

You can learn more about testing appliance components in the video linked below.

  • 02:40

All circuits need to be grounded, and must have overcurrent protection

  • 02:45

to prevent electrical fires and electricution.

  • 02:49

Your home's circuit breakers protect all downstream circuits and devices

  • 02:54

and will trip when the current gets too high.

  • 02:58

As well some appliances will have one time fuses rated for a maximum amperage.

  • 03:05

This will protect against short circuits.

  • 03:13

Short circuits are created when the hot and

  • 03:16

neutral wires touch, and the circuit is completed before the load.

  • 03:21

In this case the current no longer flows through the entire circuit

  • 03:25

and with no resistance, the current rises.

  • 03:29

Without any protection, this increased current will cause the wires to heat up,

  • 03:34

burn out, and will start an electrical fire.

  • 03:40

In a protected circuit the extra current will trip the circuit breaker or will blow the fuse.

  • 03:48

Now if an appliance keeps tripping the breaker, then it's likely that there is an internal short.

  • 03:54

In this case you'll have to locate and repair the damaged wires or component.

  • 03:59

Then the breaker must be reset or the fuse replaced.

  • 04:09

A ground fault happens when a hot wire or component

  • 04:13

touches the metal housing of the appliance.

  • 04:15

The housing is now energized, and the ground wire returns the electricity to the source.

  • 04:23

Electricity will always take the path of least resistance.

  • 04:27

If you touch an energized housing without a ground wire, you might be electricuted.

  • 04:34

If the ground fault happens before the load the circuit is shorted, the current increases,

  • 04:41

and the breaker or fuse will blow cutting power to the appliance.

  • 04:47

Now if the ground fault happens after the load, there is still resistance in the circuit

  • 04:53

so the breaker might not trip.

  • 04:56

The appliance might still be functional but this depends on the component affected.

  • 05:02

To test if an appliance is shorted to ground you can plug it into a circuit protected by

  • 05:08

a GFCI or ground fault circuit interupter.

  • 05:13

GFCI's monitor the current between the hot and neutral lines.

  • 05:18

If there is even a small amount of current leaking to ground, then the GFCI will trip,

  • 05:24

    disconnecting power until it's reset.

  • 05:29

Components can also be tested for shorts.

  • 05:32

If the component has continuity between either terminal and the metal frame,

  • 05:37

then it's shorted to ground and will need to be replaced.

  • 05:43
