  • 00:00

Could cruise still be over 6  months away before returning?

  • 00:03

That what one big Floridian port is saying.

  • 00:06

Plus, will children be barred from  cruising when it first returns.

  • 00:09

We have this and the cruise  news updated you need to know.

  • 00:13

    So stay tuned.

  • 00:15

    Well ahoy there cruisers.

  • 00:16

  • 00:27

So first up that headline  news from Port Canaveral.

  • 00:30

It says it believes it won’t see  cruise ship until at-least July.

  • 00:36

It’s one of the largest passenger  cruise ports in the world.

  • 00:38

Handling around 4.5 million cruise  passengers every single year.

  • 00:43

They have said when it does start up, they expect

  • 00:45

it to be a real slow re-start and a very careful approach.

  • 00:50

    Port CEO Captain John Murray said;

  • 00:53

    “The cruise lines themselves have

  • 00:54

kicked everything down the  road for three months already,

  • 00:57

or at least through March and April.

  • 01:00

The reality given the pandemic right now, until those numbers start coming down,

  • 01:05

we just don’t see that this industry

  • 01:07

is going to get any attention  that it needs to get restarted.”

  • 01:11

He also said vaccinations would need to increase before he expects restart to happen.

  • 01:16

And it’s not just cruise lines  that have bleeding money.

  • 01:19

    It's the ports themselves.

  • 01:21

For example, Port Canaveral has lost a massive $43 million over the last year.

  • 01:28

They are moving $17 million from its reserve funds to help balance the budget.

  • 01:33

They have said they are going to be fine

  • 01:34

for least another year without  any passenger cruising.

  • 01:37

Port Canaveral is home to ships  from Carnival Cruise Line,

  • 01:40

Disney Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean and Norwegian.

  • 01:44

MSC Cruises also plans to homeport its ship

  • 01:47

MSC Seaside at Port Canaveral  once the pandemic is over.

  • 01:52

This Ben re-itterates what we have been saying In the past couple of months.

  • 01:56

First of all its going to be a slow start when cruise does come back.

  • 01:59

And secondly, that the  shut-down of the cruise industry

  • 02:01

affects more than just the  cruise ships themselves.

  • 02:04

People on land in the ports for example. Huge knock on effects from the fact that cruise

  • 02:09

    isn't running at the moment.

  • 03:39

    Now back to the show.

  • 03:40

Next up everything has came  to a standstill unfortunately.

  • 03:43

Cruise lines are desperately trying to comply with the CDC’s Conditional Sailing Order.

  • 03:50

The order which replaced the  No Sail Order last October

  • 03:53

requires new health and safety  protocols onboard ships.

  • 03:56

It also requires cruise lines to hold test cruises and recertify each vessel individually.

  • 04:02

So, as you can imagine this is a huge complex job.

  • 04:06

The major cruise lines have said they are making progress with the requirements.

  • 04:10

But things have came to a standstill with the CDC.

  • 04:13

They are awaiting further direction on what to do next.

  • 04:16

But with the pandemic hitting the USA so hard it isn’t a priority at the moment.

  • 04:21

We are now casting doubts on our own prediction of cruise been up and running by July.

  • 04:26

This is now looking more and more unlikely.

  • 04:29

We wouldn’t be surprised it we don’t see a resumption of cruising this year at all

  • 04:33

    or even into fall 2021.

  • 04:36

So one cruise analyst has predicted the same thing that we just said.

  • 04:39

That cruise will not resume till at least Fall.

  • 04:42

Patrick Sholes a prominent  cruise industry financial analyst

  • 04:46

has indicated we might be waiting a while yet.

  • 04:49

    In a recent note to investors he said;

  • 04:51

"an optimistic view is that cruises  likely won’t resume from U.S. ports

  • 04:56

until the second half of this  year, and possibly not until 2022."

  • 05:02

But he did offer some positive news, saying that bookings for future cruises

  • 05:06

    are now exceed cancellations.

  • 05:09

This is the first time this  has happened since March 2020.

  • 05:12

So it's good to see more  booking than cancellations.

  • 05:15

He also commented on the  CDC Conditional Sail Order.

  • 05:19

Saying it was basically a No  Sail Order with a new name.

  • 05:22

He also highlighted that the CDC’s new order was very hard to achieve, saying:

  • 05:27

“The concern is that the CDC’s hurdles are so high

  • 05:31

that it will make it extremely  difficult for the cruise lines

  • 05:34

    to sail with paid customers.”

  • 05:35

So as we have been saying all along.

  • 05:37

The CDC has been making it  incredibly hard for cruise lines

  • 05:40

to sail and resume compared to  other forms of transportation.

  • 05:44

Such as flights, land transportation,  land vacations, theme parks.

  • 05:49

The Disney Resort in Florida  been open for example.

  • 05:52

How come they are allowed to open?

  • 05:53

But cruise lines are been  made to jump through these

  • 05:55

    ridiculous hurdles.

  • 05:57

As you said, from the expert there.

  • 05:59

    The new Conditional Sail Order

  • 06:00

is just a No Sail Order with different clothes on.

  • 06:02

    It's exactly the same thing.

  • 06:04

Yeah, and since that came in we have not seen any progress really from any of the cruise lines.

  • 06:08

Except Royal Caribbean who was the only one, we said last week

  • 06:12

    actively looking for volunteers.

  • 06:13

Yeah, cruise line haven't  actually dissed the CDC yet.

  • 06:17

But they have said they are waiting for technical protocols from them.

  • 06:21

So they are waiting for the  CDC the get back to them.

  • 06:23

So nothing is happening at the moment.

  • 06:26

Now more on vaccines being required to cruise.

  • 06:29

As you know a few weeks ago

  • 06:30

we brought you the news of  british cruise line Saga

  • 06:33

requiring everybody to have  a vaccination to cruise.

  • 06:36

We had a very mixed response, some people were very happy

  • 06:40

    others were super angry.

  • 06:42

Especially those that can't have the vaccine due to allergies, blood and heart conditions.

  • 06:47

Now Norwegian cruise line has said

  • 06:49

they are looking into the  legalities into requiring a virus.

  • 06:52

    CEO Frank Del Rio said;

  • 06:54

“It’s too early to tell whether we  have the legal standing to mandate

  • 06:58

that you take a vaccine to come onboard,

  • 07:00

lawyers are looking at it as we speak.”

  • 07:02

One problem with this is that NCLs passengers are much younger than Saga’s.

  • 07:07

It could take months, even years until under 65s receive the vaccination.

  • 07:12

Some countries will only be offering it to older and more vulnerable people.

  • 07:16

This means they are cutting off a huge percentage of passengers who could travel with them.

  • 07:20

NCL has also revealed it  will require all crew members

  • 07:23

to be vaccinated against before  resuming work on its ships.

  • 07:28

    Which is fantastic news.

  • 07:29

In contrast to this, Saga isn’t  going to require this for crew.

  • 07:33

Putting them in more danger  of contracting the virus.

  • 07:36

And here, in the UK, it's the government  plan to vaccinate all over 18s

  • 07:41

    by fall this year.

  • 07:42

So this brings up the question. What about children?

  • 07:45

The vaccination will not be given to under 18s because not approved to be done so.

  • 07:51

So does this mean children under 18 will not be allowed to cruise when it resumes?

  • 07:55

As they will be unable to have the vaccine?

  • 07:57

We can certainly see it being a possibility, when cruising first resumes.

  • 08:02

Saga has already said that if you can’t have the vaccine

  • 08:05

    due to health conditions

  • 08:08

you will still be refused  travel - kids could be the same.

  • 08:11

We are still not happy about this, we still think this is disability discrimination.

  • 08:17

Children and teens are far less likely than adults to become seriously ill with the virus.

  • 08:22

But they are just as capable  of carrying and spreading it.

  • 08:26

For cruise lines such as Norwegian,  Carnival, Disney and Royal caribbean

  • 08:30

who carry lots of families and kids.

  • 08:32

This could be a massive issue and cut off huge portions of their audience.

  • 08:38

As soon as we hear more we will let you know so hit that subscribe.

  • 08:41

And talking about Norwegian Cruise Line in some bad news

  • 08:45

all Norwegian Cruise Line non-essential crew will be repatriated home by April 2021.

  • 08:52

Norwegian Cruise Line brought  thousands of crew members

  • 08:54

back to it’s cruise ships in  November and December of last year.

  • 08:57

To prepare the cruise ships for a possible restart in compliance with the CDC Conditional Sail Order.

  • 09:03

Over 1000 crew members boarded  Norwegian Escape in Mumbai, India

  • 09:08

and over 1200 crew joined the  Norwegian Joy in Manila, Philippines.

  • 09:13

But with the continued push  back on a resumption of cruise

  • 09:16

they have decided to send all  non essential crew back home.

  • 09:19

This was a very difficult decision for Norwegian.

  • 09:22

And they have said that they are going to prioritise those crew

  • 09:24

who they have sent home to get back on the ships once it does start sailing.

  • 09:28

But they think that the  crew are going to be happier

  • 09:30

    at home with their families.

  • 09:32

So now the two ships will now make their way back to where crew boarded to offload the crew.

  • 09:37

The Norwegian Encore for example is in SOuthampton at the moment.

  • 09:40

So it going to make its way all  the way back to Mumbai, India

  • 09:43

    to return those crew home.

  • 09:45

Sad news, but again showing  we are no closer to a restart.

  • 09:48

Guys this hurts our heart so much.

  • 09:50

    And in other news.

  • 09:51

As we predicted a few weeks ago, Sycamore Partners the company who bought Azamara

  • 09:55

have purchased Pacific  Princess from Princess Cruises.

  • 09:59

High five ben on getting that prediction right. Yay!

  • 10:02

The private equity firm bought boutique line Azamara

  • 10:06

from Royal Caribbean Group last week in a surprise move.

  • 10:09

She will be added to the fleet  of their existing three ships

  • 10:12

    after a big renovation.

  • 10:14

Can't wait to see what she looks like or what she is going to be called.

  • 10:17

So, all of the Azamara ships; Journey, Pursuit... have something to do with movement.

  • 10:22

Let us know your guesses of what the ship is going to be called in the comments section below.

  • 10:27

    And finally in Europe.

  • 10:29

Costa Cruises has decided to postpone the restart of its ships to March 13, 2021.

  • 10:35

This is following an evaluation of the measures in the Italian government’s decree

  • 10:40

currently enforced in Italy regarding travel.

  • 10:43

So basically, the cruise line didn’t feel that with the current restrictions in place

  • 10:46

    by the government.

  • 10:47

That would allow its customers  have a good time on its cruises.

  • 10:51

Especially on land with all of the new restrictions.

  • 10:54

They said; “We support the collective effort that Italy

  • 10:58

is making to deal with the health emergency and looks forward to mid-March for its return

  • 11:04

offering its guests a relaxing and  enjoyable vacation experience.”

  • 11:07

So even in Europe where cruise lines have been getting up and running, there is still push back.

  • 11:12

Guys it still seems like we are far off from any

  • 11:16

sort of cruising in the USA  and a restart around the world.

  • 11:21
