  • 00:04

30 MHz is an Amsterdam-based software company

  • 00:08

who set out to build an analytics and management platform for smart devices.

  • 00:13

They never dreamed they would end up in agriculture.

  • 00:23

We started with a cloud infrastructure model platform.

  • 00:27

    We developed this on AWS.

  • 00:29

I'm Jasper Geurtsen, Co-Founder and Head of Hardware Department in 30 MHz.

  • 00:34

The first few years we focused on building the product and finding our industry.

  • 00:39

My name is Flavia Paganelli, I am Co-Founder at 30 MHz and former CTO.

  • 00:47

We knew that we wanted to combine our strong AWS infrastructure

  • 00:52

with wireless sensors to digitalize some process,

  • 00:57

but we didn't know what process yet.

  • 01:00

30 MHz found the ideal match for that combination

  • 01:03

in the agricultural industry, specifically greenhouses and indoor farms.

  • 01:08

We realized that we were culturally a very good fit.

  • 01:13

And then, we decided to focus on building the product knowing that we would add value to the space.

  • 01:21

With the global population predicted to reach 9.1 billion by 2050,

  • 01:26

the world's food production needs to increase by at least 70%.

  • 01:31

Meaning more farmers grow more food for more people

  • 01:35

while not taxing our planet's precious resources.

  • 01:41

We set out to make a data-driven technology for any farmers in the world, for any states.

  • 01:48

We knew when we came into the agriculture field that we had technology

  • 01:52

that could really help low-tech farmers bridge the gap with high-tech farmers.

  • 01:56

The original 30 MHz platform culled and analyzed data

  • 02:01

from infield monitoring devices, allowing farmers to remotely monitor

  • 02:05

and manage much of what happened in their greenhouses.

  • 02:08

What you see is that farmers are cultivating ever-increasing plots of land

  • 02:15

and with the script of predictive analytics, we can help them

  • 02:19

    manage these areas more effectively.

  • 02:24

I'm Daam Rutten, I'm a data scientist working for 30MHz.

  • 02:28

In the early days, teams had to troubleshoot outages, loss of data,

  • 02:32

and found the monitoring system difficult to scale.

  • 02:35

So we had to re-design part of our architecture to make our gateways

  • 02:42

    run autonomously.

  • 02:45

But we saw this as an opportunity to drop some of our software

  • 02:49

    and start using AWS IoT.

  • 02:53

With the support of the AWS prototype team,

  • 02:56

we managed to integrate AWS Greengrass into our gateways,

  • 03:01

and this way we loosened the boundary between the edge and the cloud network

  • 03:07

and really make this flexible, and we get additional features

  • 03:12

like offline buffering, so when the connection drops,

  • 03:15

then Greengrass will store the data for us, and when the connection is recovered,

  • 03:20

it will send out the missing time.

  • 03:23

    My name is Amir Majlesi.

  • 03:25

I look after AWS prototyping activities in development at Nordics.

  • 03:31

We collaborated with the 30 MHz team in a hands-on rapid prototyping engagement,

  • 03:37

helping them modernize their architecture and build

  • 03:42

    a serverless smart agriculture solution.

  • 03:46

We co-developed a working prototype which was customized to their business environment in just 3 weeks.

  • 03:53

The new prototype solved the device management and connectivity issues,

  • 03:57

and helped 30 MHz automate the provisioning of gateways.

  • 04:00

It also added capabilities such as over-the-air updates

  • 04:04

and advanced security measures to protect data.

  • 04:08

In 2019, the team participated in the Autonomous Greenhouse Challenge,

  • 04:12

sponsored by Wageningen University & Research.

  • 04:15

The goal of the Greenhouse Challenge was to autonomously manage

  • 04:19

a greenhouse for 6 months. We were cultivating tomatoes.

  • 04:23

The experience pushed 30 MHz to look closer at how they could bring this type of data analytics

  • 04:29

and machine learning to real growers.

  • 04:31

And I think it was the introduction to the challenge that also introduced us to

  • 04:36

the possibilities for autonomous growing for actual greenhouses.

  • 04:41

30 MHz sought to develop a solution that combined the data monitoring software

  • 04:46

and the data collecting hardware with machine learning.

  • 04:49

This machine learning technology would enable growers to make real-time decisions

  • 04:53

on climate and irrigation, creating optimal growing conditions for crops.

  • 04:58

The 30 MHz team had highly specialized expertise in digital agriculture and data science.

  • 05:06

The port of engagements really builds upon these existing skills

  • 05:11

and enabled the team to develop a new machine learning pipeline with Amazon SageMaker.

  • 05:17

The AWS team helped 30 MHz analyze the data, build and deploy the machine learning models

  • 05:23

for inference, and automate the machine learning process from beginning to end.

  • 05:28

We implemented the architecture in 2 parts.

  • 05:31

    Model training and inference.

  • 05:35

First, we fetched the existing 30 MHz codes from their code repository.

  • 05:41

We trained this model with Amazon SageMaker, using specific data sets from each grower.

  • 05:48

Once training is done, SageMaker stores the model artifacts in an S3 bucket.

  • 05:55

The next step is to evaluate the model performance to check if the accuracy is sufficient enough.

  • 06:02

After it passes, the model is deployed.

  • 06:06

Once deployed, the model is now ready for inference with incoming sensor data

  • 06:12

collected from customer fields using AWS Greengrass.

  • 06:18

So one of our customers is an IPM consultant

  • 06:22

and he has been using the 30 MHz platform to really look into the data

  • 06:27

    with grower groups on situations

  • 06:32

where pest and diseases might increase and analyzing this micro-climate data,

  • 06:37

including the crop log data to really see situations

  • 06:42

or conditions that may explain these kinds of situations.

  • 06:46

For these grower groups, understanding and visualizing this data

  • 06:51

on the disease management is really helping them to push back the infection.

  • 06:56

They not only save money, but it's maybe more important that they're really able to

  • 07:00

leave out some chemical solutions that might otherwise

  • 07:05

be necessary to really push back the disease.

  • 07:08

So we envisioned our technology being available everywhere in the world at a fraction of the cost

  • 07:13

    of climate computer systems.

  • 07:17

And this will dramatically lower the costs of running a greenhouse.

  • 07:22

This can happen everywhere in the world.

  • 07:25

The 30 MHz prototype is currently being tested by 8 pilot growers,

  • 07:29

with the hopes of scaling up to hundreds, even thousands, of growers in the near future.

  • 07:34

The insights and information that this technology gives to our customers

  • 07:39

    can be life-changing.

  • 07:41

The collaboration with AWS prototyping has been key for this,

  • 07:46

because we have been able to build and test fast

  • 07:52

and also create solutions which are scalable and reliable from the beginning.

  • 07:59

The 30 MHz team continues to look to the future, refining and expanding the capabilities

  • 08:05

while keeping the technology easy to use.

  • 08:08

I think one of the things that we've experienced is that it's possible to have

  • 08:13

    real-time autonomous control.

  • 08:15

The main challenge, however, is to incorporate real-time feedback from the crop,

  • 08:22

which we still aren't able to measure, or at least measure to the extent that we'd like.

  • 08:28

Today, 30 MHz has 35 employees, and services over 330 customers

  • 08:34

    across 30 countries and counting.

  • 08:38

30 MHz wants to be the leader who brings the infrastructure

  • 08:43

and information to growers to allow them, and the whole industry, to advance

  • 08:48

    at a much faster pace.

  • 08:50

And in this way, they can make better use of resources and feed the world.
