  • 00:01

Hello Everyone, I'm Daniel Love, The Lucid Guide.

  • 00:05

Today we'll explore everything you need to know about the powerful and potentially life-changing

  • 00:11

    experience of dimethyltryptamine, aka DMT.

  • 00:17

We'll cover the basics, law, saftey, experience, myths and a whole lot more...

  • 00:23

    So, let's get started.

  • 00:27

For anyone interested in the exploration of consciousness, there is simply no denying the allure

  • 00:33

of the otherworldly experiences offered by mind-altering drugs, especially psychedelic

  • 00:40

    compounds.

  • 00:41

Arguably, the king of all entheogenic substances is DMT, offering those brave enough to venture

  • 00:47

into its territory, experiences that can transcend language and shake the philosophical and existential

  • 00:55

    bedrock of one's reality.

  • 00:57

DMT is a powerful naturally-occurring psychedelic that’s also found endogenously in the human

  • 01:05

    body and many living organisms.

  • 01:08

Visually, it appears as a white or yellow crystalline substance, although poor extractions

  • 01:14

can lead to a yellow wax-like material.

  • 01:16

DMT has a unique and difficult-to-place scent, with some likening it to mothballs or a musky

  • 01:22

    jasmine.

  • 01:24

After using DMT, many users report noticing its scent absolutely everywhere.

  • 01:29

As with most tryptamines, DMT's molecular structure is very similar to that of Serotonin.

  • 01:37

The most popular means of taking DMT is through the inhalation of its vapour, but it can also

  • 01:43

be taken orally in ayahuasca-like preparations.

  • 01:47

Alongside ayahuasca, traditionally, it has also been used as a snuff.

  • 01:51

Vaped dosage ranges from 10 to 60mg, with 30-60mg being most common.

  • 01:58

Whatever the dose, the administration experience translates to three long and deeply held inhalations

  • 02:05

    of its somewhat harsh vapour.

  • 02:08

DMT is a Schedule 1 illegal drug in the United States and shares a similar illegal status

  • 02:15

    in almost all countries.

  • 02:17

While it is considered mostly-harmless and non-habit forming among its users, there has

  • 02:22

been little scientific research into its long-term effects on health.

  • 02:26

In other words, most claims you might hear are likely to be assumption or speculation.

  • 02:32

As with any powerful drug that profoundly alters the complex machinery of the mind,

  • 02:37

one should proceed with the appropriate caution, safety, and respect.

  • 02:42

Indeed, those with a personal or family history of mental illness should be especially cautious,

  • 02:48

as there may be a risk of triggering latent issues.

  • 02:52

On the flip-side, recent research has also shown promising results in using similar compounds

  • 02:58

    to treat long-term depression.

  • 03:01

During the experience users are almost entirely incapacitated, in a state resembling sleep,

  • 03:07

therefore it should only be used in a safe, secure and relaxing environment with those

  • 03:13

with whom the user trusts deeply.

  • 03:16

A bed or comfortable spot to lay is essential.

  • 03:20

It is wise to have a sober and trustworthy companion to watch over you.

  • 03:29

The experience of DMT is short lived at roughly 10 minutes, and incredibly intense.

  • 03:37

Indeed, most who have experienced its effects admit that there are simply no words to describe it.

  • 03:45

Even experienced psychonauts who have used other psychedelics are generally shocked by

  • 03:50

    its sheer intensity and peculiarity.

  • 03:53

Initially, one finds a comfortable spot, a place to lie down during the experience.

  • 04:00

Then with the help of a partner one proceeds to take the first long, deep inhalation, this

  • 04:07

is held for as long as possible and quickly followed by the second.

  • 04:11

At this point, most people will already be feeling the intensity of the effects, with

  • 04:17

a rapid onset of geometric designs crisscrossing one's vision and reality melting as if at

  • 04:25

the peak of an LSD trip.

  • 04:28

Generally, most people feel "the highest they have ever felt", and the idea of a third toke

  • 04:34

    is incredibly unappealing.

  • 04:36

However, the third inhalation is vital for the full "breakthrough" experience.

  • 04:42

On the third toke, your assistant will take the pipe and the user will lie back on the

  • 04:47

    bed and close their eyes.

  • 04:49

At this point, roughly 10 to 20 seconds after the first toke, any connection to the physical

  • 04:55

    world has been lost.

  • 04:56

This may involve the feeling of dissolving, being pulled through a hyperspace tunnel,

  • 05:01

or simply "appearing" in an entirely different psychedelic geometric space - which has been

  • 05:07

    nicknamed "the waiting room".

  • 05:10

Personal identity will have mostly evaporated, with only base consciousness remaining.

  • 05:15

For most this can be a terrifying experience, and the belief that one is dying is a common

  • 05:21

    fear.

  • 05:22

However, it is vital to remain calm and to simply relax and let go, but this is much

  • 05:28

    easier said than done!

  • 05:30

Time also appears to lose all meaning, with the space between each breath seeming infinitely

  • 05:36

    long.

  • 05:37

This can also induce the unfounded fear that one has stopped breathing.

  • 05:42

This "Ego Death" tends to occur in the "waiting room", a space that has been described as

  • 05:47

feeling something like a complex geometric multi-dimensional cosmic doorway.

  • 05:53

Now, One may be greeted by what feels like some form of an independent entity, and while

  • 06:00

it is hard to put into words, often they appear to be formed from the very same ever-changing-kaleidoscope-environment

  • 06:08

    that unfolds before you.

  • 06:10

These beings can come in a variety of forms and personalities, from loving almost-parental

  • 06:16

creatures, devious, cold-and-detached, shocked, outright malevolent, and everything in-between.

  • 06:24

If the dosage has been correct, one will be pulled through the doorway and into "hyperspace"

  • 06:30

itself, often guided by the entity, all attempts at a description from this point onwards become

  • 06:36

    virtually meaningless.

  • 06:38

For the next 10 minutes, which for the experiencer can feel like eternity itself, one feels as

  • 06:44

if they have entered an entirely alternate reality - one in which all the rules of OUR

  • 06:50

    world have become quite useless.

  • 06:53

Indeed, many suggest that they feel like an infant in an unfathomably confusing and vastly

  • 06:59

    different universe.

  • 07:01

There really is nothing that can prepare you for this and the astonishment that one feels

  • 07:06

    can be entirely overwhelming.

  • 07:09

One thing is common, that the experience is almost always reported as hyper-real or feeling

  • 07:16

    more real than life itself.

  • 07:19

People report all manner of experiences from alien experimentation, communication with

  • 07:24

god or gods, peculiar cosmic sexual encounters, playful cosmic clowns, or any manner of outright

  • 07:32

    bizarre experiences.

  • 07:34

It is entirely impossible to predict the experience - as often each trip seems utterly unrelated

  • 07:40

to the personality or interests of the user.

  • 07:44

Often people report the entities offering seemingly profound insights into their lives,

  • 07:48

the state of humanity, or other spiritual revelations.

  • 07:53

Of course, as with experiences in dreams, it is important to be cautious of taking such

  • 07:59

    insights entirely on face value.

  • 08:02

Simply because something *feels* profound, doesn't always mean it truly is.

  • 08:08

Whatever your beliefs about DMT, be they scientific, spiritual, or somewhere in-between, remember,

  • 08:14

both the subconscious mind and any potential otherworldy entities are as capable as any

  • 08:20

human of attempting to deceive or manipulate.

  • 08:24

So, retain a healthy level of critical thinking.

  • 08:28

As the DMT wears off, between the 8-10 minutes mark, the consciousness of the body slowly

  • 08:34

returns - often feeling as if one "remembers" one's existence in this dimension.

  • 08:40

Aspects of the personality and self, coalesce, and normality rapidly returns.

  • 08:46

Often one has been so detached from oneself that if there is more than one person in the

  • 08:50

room, it seems almost arbitrary who you'll awake as.

  • 08:54

Normal reality can often feel exquisitely comfortable and reassuring by comparison - a

  • 09:00

feeling that much like returning home after a long and exotic journey.

  • 09:04

It is now that any trip report must be recorded as, like a dream, the memory will quickly

  • 09:11

    fade.

  • 09:12

Remarkably, most people feel almost completely normal within 15 to 30 minutes after the experience

  • 09:19

    - if not a little shaken by the realisation of such a profoundly different world.

  • 09:26

One cannot talk about DMT without addressing some of the common myths associated with the

  • 09:32

    substance.

  • 09:33

The following are popular beliefs which sound incredibly exciting, yet have absolutely no

  • 09:38

    evidence to support them:

  • 09:40

Firstly, DMT is released during birth and/or death - one should ask oneself simply what

  • 09:47

kind of hideous experiment would have had to have been undertaken to discover this.

  • 09:52

Rest assured, no such experiment has ever been performed and there is no evidence

  • 09:56

    to support this claim.

  • 09:58

Secondly, DMT is produced in the pineal gland (referred to by some as "the Third Eye") - Again,

  • 10:07

this is pure speculation with no scientific evidence.

  • 10:10

The pineal gland isn't fully understood but we do know that it regulates some hormones

  • 10:15

such as melatonin - which is best known for its role regulating sleep patterns.

  • 10:20

DMT has not been discovered in any significant amounts in the pineal gland.

  • 10:26

Thirdly, DMT is responsible for dreams.

  • 10:30

While this certainly sounds plausible, again there is no direct evidence that the body

  • 10:36

even uses DMT as a neurotransmitter.

  • 10:39

While it is present in the body, some evidence points to it likely being the byproduct of

  • 10:45

the synthesis of similar transmitters like tryptophan or serotonin.

  • 10:50

DMT is a fascinating substance that raises deep questions about the nature of self and

  • 10:57

reality, it is more than interesting enough without needing to invent myths about its

  • 11:02

use in the brain, dreams, birth or death.

  • 11:05

While it's great to speculate, it's good to remain lucid in our understanding.

  • 11:12

DMT is a remarkable chemical with a long and rich history and I believe it is up to each

  • 11:19

individual to assess the legal, physical and psychological risks involved in its use.

  • 11:26

Certainly, an experience with DMT will shake the very foundations of your existence - raising

  • 11:32

all manner of philosophical and spiritual questions.

  • 11:36

It is up to you to draw your own conclusions - I'd recommend doing so with a clear and

  • 11:42

    lucid mind.

  • 11:44

Personally, I'd recommend that those who are interested in this and other substances first

  • 11:50

    try a little experiment.

  • 11:52

Develop your ability to lucid dream, and then use that dream control to explore these drugs

  • 11:59

within the safety of the dream world.

  • 12:02

I and others have had fascinatingly convincing experiences in just this manner - a lucid

  • 12:08

dream of DMT can be just as astonishing as the real thing.

  • 12:14

As an additional bonus, you will have also unlocked the keys to your own personal biological

  • 12:21

virtual reality and a universe of self-exploration.

    find ourselves in?

  • 12:49
