  • 00:08

In 334 BC, Alexander, 21 year-old ruler of the small Greek kingdom of Macedonia, led

  • 00:16

an invasion of the vast Persian Empire.

  • 00:22

It seemed impossible odds, but thanks to Greek military dominance, and Alexander's fearless

  • 00:29

leadership, he won two great battles against the Persians…

  • 00:34

at the River Granicus, and at Issus.

  • 00:43

Having subdued Persian lands west of the Euphrates River, he now headed east into the empire's

  • 00:50

heartlands, seeking a final showdown with the Persian King, Darius III.

  • 00:59

Receiving news that a great Persian army, led by Darius, had assembled at Gaugemela,

  • 01:04

near modern Mosul in Iraq – he made straight for it.

  • 01:09

This was Darius's last chance to stop Alexander – and Alexander's chance to smash Persian

  • 01:17

    power once and for all.

  • 01:24

Darius had chosen to fight on open ground, where his advantage in numbers would be more

  • 01:34

    telling.

  • 01:36

His soldiers had also worked hard to clear and flatten the terrain, to make it suitable

  • 01:42

    for Persian war chariots.

  • 01:45

By modern estimates, the Persian Army was between 50 and 80,000 strong, and made up

  • 01:52

of contingents from across the empire:

  • 01:56

    infantry from Syria and Babylonia...

  • 02:02

cavalry from Armenia, India and Central Asia...

  • 02:06

up to 200 scythed chariots... even a handful of war elephants.

  • 02:20

Alexander's army was smaller, and may have been outnumbered by as much as two to one.

  • 02:27

He deployed his units in their usual formation:

  • 02:31

On the left flank, Thracian and Thessalian cavalry, commanded by Parmenion.

  • 02:39

In the centre, the Macedonian veterans of the phalanx – each armed with their 18 foot

  • 02:45

    sarissa pike.

  • 02:49

On the right flank, Alexander with his elite cavalry, the Companions; and his best infantry,

  • 02:56

    the hypaspists.

  • 02:59

These were the units with which Alexander planned to launch his main attack.

  • 03:06

Greek hoplites formed a second line, and supported both wings – which were angled back, to

  • 03:12

guard against encirclement by the Persians.

  • 03:18

The battle began when Alexander led his wing out to the right – a move that took the

  • 03:27

    Persians by surprise.

  • 03:30

Could Alexander really be trying to encircle their huge army?

  • 03:36

The Persians mirrored his movement, taking troops away from their centre, to outflank

  • 03:44

Alexander, and prevent him leaving the area they'd cleared for the Persian chariots.

  • 03:50

But Alexander's unusual manoeuvre was a trap - to entice the Persians to weaken their centre.

  • 03:59

When he saw that it had worked, he ordered his Greek cavalry to charge, to keep the Persians

  • 04:04

    fixed in position.

  • 04:07

A giant cavalry battle developed on the right wing.

  • 04:15

Darius, meanwhile, judging this to be the decisive moment, unleashed his chariots.

  • 04:24

But expert Agrianes javelin-throwers took out horses and crews – while the Greek infantry

  • 04:37

opened lanes, allowing the chariots to pass harmlessly through.

  • 04:46

Now Alexander led his Companion cavalry, and parts of the Macedonian phalanx, in a headlong

  • 04:55

charge straight at the weakened Persian centre, fighting his way towards Darius himself.

  • 05:02

The sudden ferocity of Alexander's assault threw the Persians into panic – the centre

  • 05:08

of the army broke and ran - King Darius himself leading the rout.

  • 05:17

But Alexander's left wing was in serious trouble – Parmenion, facing a huge onslaught by

  • 05:27

Persian cavalry, was virtually surrounded - Indian and Scythian horsemen had even ridden

  • 05:34

through a gap in the Greek line – but rather than wheeling and attacking the Greeks from

  • 05:39

behind, they'd carried straight on to loot their camp.

  • 05:44

Parmenion sent a desperate appeal to Alexander for help.

  • 05:55

The King abandoned his pursuit of Darius, regrouped, and charged the Persian right wing.

  • 06:05

It was the hardest and bloodiest fighting of the battle – claiming the lives of sixty

  • 06:17

    of Alexander's Companions.

  • 06:21

Finally, as news of Darius's flight spread across the battlefield, the last Persian horsemen

  • 06:31

    turned and fled.

  • 06:35

The Battle of Gaugamela was a stunning and complete victory for Alexander.

  • 06:44

According to ancient sources, he lost just a few hundred men, while the Persians lost

  • 06:51

    thousands.

  • 06:57

Alexander had routed Darius's great army, and now the road to Babylon – the empire's

  • 07:04

    main capital - lay open.

  • 07:08

The Macedonian king entered the great city in triumph, recognised by Persian officials

  • 07:15

    as its new rightful ruler.

  • 07:18

So too at the city of Susa, where Alexander ceremonially took his seat upon the royal

  • 07:24

    throne of Persia.

  • 07:28

In the Zagros mountains, at a pass known as the Persian Gates, a courageous Persian force

  • 07:35

held up Alexander's army for a month.

  • 07:40

The Greeks eventually found a mountain path that bypassed their position, allowing them

  • 07:45

to encircle and wipe out the defenders.

  • 07:49

In early 330 BC, Alexander reached Persepolis, the empire's ceremonial capital.

  • 07:57

Alexander wanted to appear as a liberator to the Persians – as a legitimate successor

  • 08:02

to King Darius - but now, he ordered Persepolis to be pillaged and burnt – retribution for

  • 08:13

the Persian invasion of Greece, and the burning of Athens' sacred temples in 480 BC.

  • 08:26

Alexander now headed north into Media, where Darius had taken refuge in the royal city

  • 08:31

    of Ecbatana.

  • 08:35

Alexander was determined to capture Darius – but the fugitive king fled east in the

  • 08:40

hope of raising a new army in the provinces of Parthia, Bactria, and Sogdia.

  • 08:48

    It was not to be.

  • 08:50

As Alexander closed in, the Persian king was murdered by one of his own governors, Bessus,

  • 08:56

who then proclaimed himself the empire’s new ruler.

  • 09:04

Alexander gave orders for Darius to be buried in the royal tombs of Persepolis, alongside

    his ancestors.

  • 09:12

Then he paused to organise his vast new empire.

  • 09:18

Alexander appointed viceroys to rule the provinces on his behalf, keeping several Persians - who

  • 09:25

had sworn loyalty - in their posts.

  • 09:27

He also allowed Greek troops, who wished, to return home.

  • 09:29

Then he resumed his march east.

  • 09:32

His goal: to find and kill the usurper Bessus...

  • 09:37

    subjugate the empire's eastern provinces...
