  • 00:00

Are you a herbal tea drinker?

  • 00:02

In that case, you'll be wondering which teas are safe during pregnancy.

  • 00:07

Today I'm going to take you through the evidence on nine different types of herbal tea so that

  • 00:12

you know which ones are safe during pregnancy, and which ones to avoid.

  • 00:17

    Stay tuned!

  • 00:55

Herbal tea is known to have a range of health benefits from reducing inflammation to improving

  • 01:00

    heart health.

  • 01:02

It's not only delicious, but medicinal too.

  • 01:05

Which is why, not all teas are safe during pregnancy.

  • 01:10

You see, herbal tea may help ease uncomfortable pregnancy symptoms, such as morning sickness

  • 01:17

    and acid reflux.

  • 01:19

But, consuming too much herbal tea during pregnancy may have adverse impacts on your

  • 01:25

    baby's growth and development.

  • 01:27

There is a wide range of herbal tea choices.

  • 01:31

Let's have a closer look at which are safe, and which are not....

  • 01:36

Firstly, unless specifically recommended by your healthcare professional, I'd recommend

  • 01:42

avoiding chamomile tea and ginseng tea.

  • 01:45

Chamomile tea is often consumed to relieve menstrual cramps and stomach aches.

  • 01:51

During pregnancy, it may be beneficial for easing the symptoms of morning sickness.

  • 01:56

However, research suggests that chamomile tea consumption during pregnancy has been

  • 02:02

associated with preterm delivery and low birth weight infants.

  • 02:06

There have also been a few documented cases of pregnant women experiencing anaphylaxis,

  • 02:12

so you definitely need to be cautious with it.

  • 02:16

Now when it comes to ginseng,

  • 02:18

authorities recommend that ginseng should generally be avoided during the first trimester

  • 02:23

of pregnancy, and used with caution if you choose to use it later in pregnancy.

  • 02:28

as studies show it has been linked with growth restriction, high blood pressure and difficulty

  • 02:34

    sleeping.

  • 02:35

There is still debate about the following herbal teas during pregnancy, so I'd recommend

  • 02:40

limiting your intake to no more than one cup per day, or two cups every other day, just

  • 02:47

to be on the safe side:

  • 02:49

Number 1 - Ginger Tea. Ginger is rich in vitamin B6, which has shown

  • 02:55

    to ease nausea.

  • 02:57

Consumption of ginger tea during pregnancy may reduce pregnancy-related nausea.

  • 03:01

However, before consuming ginger tea during pregnancy, it should be noted that there have

  • 03:06

been studies that suggest ginger tea consumption may result in shorter length of gestation

  • 03:14

and a reduced infant head circumference so don't guzzle it down.

  • 03:20

Number 2 - Green Tea. Green tea is rich in antioxidants and reduces

  • 03:26

    inflammation.

  • 03:28

Some studies have shown that the anti-inflammatory properties may reduce fat mass and risks of

  • 03:33

    obesity within offspring.

  • 03:35

However, Green tea contains caffeine, which means you need to take care to limit your

  • 03:41

    intake.

  • 03:43

Too much caffeine has been associated with impacting the development of fetal organs.

  • 03:53

Number 3 - Hibiscus Tea. Hibiscus tea is popular as it has been shown

  • 03:58

to reduce blood pressure and have a role in improving cardiovascular functioning.

  • 04:04

However, the impact of hibiscus tea during pregnancy hasn't been studied, so until there's

  • 04:12

more research, it's wise to be cautious.....especially as blood pressure often fluctuates throughout

  • 04:18

    pregnancy.

  • 04:19

Number 4 - Lemongrass Tea. Similarly, lemongrass tea appears to be relatively

  • 04:28

    safe during pregnancy.

  • 04:29

However, it too may reduce blood pressure, which may increase feelings of dizziness and

  • 04:36

lead to further hypotension. So just be careful of how much you take.

  • 04:41

Number 5 - Rooibos Tea. Although Rooibos tea is low in caffeine, and

  • 04:47

has been shown to have anti-diabetic properties, no studies have been undertaken to determine

  • 04:53

its safety during pregnancy, so until it's properly studied, it's recommended that it

  • 04:59

    be limited.

  • 05:00

Now, if you want to drink herbal tea, these teas are my favourites for pregnancy.

  • 05:07

Remember, however, that herbal teas are unregulated, so the dose and quality can vary from brand

  • 05:13

    to brand.

  • 05:15

It's also wise to read the label to check for other additives.

  • 05:19

Based on current evidence, up to three cups per day of the following teas are safe:

  • 05:26

Number 1 - Echinacea tea. Echinacea tea is derived from wildflowers and has

  • 05:32

been used historically to treat a common cold.

  • 05:35

Current research suggests that it is safe to consume in moderation during pregnancy.

  • 05:40

    Then secondly, peppermint tea.

  • 05:44

The limited research available suggests that peppermint tea is one of the safer herbal

  • 05:49

    teas to consume during pregnancy.

  • 05:51

It has also been found to be beneficial for relieving nausea and preventing vomiting in

  • 05:56

some women. So that's a good thing!

  • 05:58
