  • 00:00

happy new year everyone I know it's February I'm really sorry I haven't been

  • 00:05

able to upload if you watch the video till the end you'll kind of know why but

  • 00:09

for now this video is about CVS because you guys have requested it and what

  • 00:15

better way to start 2020 than a video about CVS and creative development

  • 00:20

previously mentioned that I've attended a workshop with an architectural hiring

  • 00:24

manager at one of the best firms in the UK and she had personally looked at my

  • 00:28

CV and gave me some critical tips that I think are super useful so in today's

  • 00:32

video we will be looking at my old and current CV

  • 00:35

what I changed and why and all of the tips that helped make my CV successful

  • 00:39

in getting my first architectural internship so let's begin from the top

  • 00:43

first thing you should have is your name and your contact info and this should be

  • 00:47

very clear the blue banner that I had was kind of a design feature to go along

  • 00:51

with my outfit in the picture but she said to be careful with color because

  • 00:55

you never know how it prints in the office of your employer and I have had

  • 00:59

previously printers being so annoying and printing the wrong colors so one way

  • 01:03

to avoid this is to make sure that all of the colors are CMYK in your Photoshop

  • 01:08

Illustrator or Word document whichever program you are using now the other way

  • 01:12

is to completely avoid color which I find bizarre but she was a professional

  • 01:16

hiring manager with over 15 years of experience so I can't really argue with

  • 01:21

that next is the profile picture she said to

  • 01:23

avoid adding pictures unless you are 100% sure it's clear and professional

  • 01:29

image she had explained that a person had applied with a profile picture

  • 01:33

holding a glass of wine which sends off a wrong and professional image then

  • 01:37

later she had discovered that person was actually holding an award but the image

  • 01:42

was not so clear so you can expect that a caused confusion so they decided to

  • 01:47

let this person go because of the inconvenience

  • 01:50

next is the profile where you give an introduction about yourself and your

  • 01:55

best qualities this is quite easy to write because you are my friends and

  • 01:58

amazing I do have a mistake here which is the hyphen between words because I

  • 02:03

like to justify my text so to fix that you will need to add or remove a few

  • 02:07

words next is employment history which is

  • 02:10

basically any job that you have had that you were paid for

  • 02:14

I did not include in the CV unfortunately any relevant experience

  • 02:17

which I was not paid for which could be useful for the employer such as

  • 02:21

volunteer work any exhibitions internship and etc don't feel

  • 02:26

discouraged if most of your work experience is in retail and mostly

  • 02:30

academic work as the employer already expects that if you are an undergraduate

  • 02:35

I was also missing a key sentence at the end which is what I learned from every

  • 02:39

experience because the employer care more about the skills that you've gained

  • 02:42

from those jobs so for example working as a part of a team working under

  • 02:47

pressure time management talking and connecting with customers you might

  • 02:50

think that these skills it isn't relevant to architecture but trust me it

  • 02:54

is all of these skills can easily be transferred and apply to architecture so

  • 02:59

next is education for those who don't know I have studied two years in Saudi

  • 03:03

Arabia before transferring to the UK however this CV makes it seem as if I

  • 03:07

had completed both of my studies or I had a double major I have also not

  • 03:11

included what modules I had next is achievement which is self-explanatory

  • 03:16

you might think that you don't have any but trust me you do you just need to dig

  • 03:21

deep you can also add any competitions you've entered any awards nominations

  • 03:26

recommendations maybe a mention in your University website or blog one of my

  • 03:30

friends even wrote that she went on a site visit I don't know if that's an

  • 03:34

achievement but it could definitely be under relevant experience so the column

  • 03:39

on the Left she didn't like very much because it felt squashed and not very

  • 03:42

clear she didn't have any other comments on it except for my social profiles and

  • 03:47

she said that I shouldn't that I have a YouTube channel and unless I get 100

  • 03:51

percent positive comments all of the time which is kind of impossible and

  • 03:56

kind of unrealistic and I don't agree with it but she was confused on whether

  • 04:00

to keep it or not as she had not seen any other student with an architectural

  • 04:05

YouTube channel before so I'll take that as a compliment so I just decided to

  • 04:09

keep it Facebook Twitter Instagram are all unnecessary if you do add them you

  • 04:14

should check your profile and make sure it's professional because employers will

  • 04:18

take this opportunity to check your social so if you have images of you

  • 04:23

partying or with your friends doing practical jokes images of your cat

  • 04:27

your meals they are not so professional so maybe those should be to friends only

  • 04:32

what you should add is LinkedIn and guys I didn't really know LinkedIn was that

  • 04:38

important so you really need to spend at least a

  • 04:41

few hours if not a full day to add as much relevant useful information as

  • 04:47

possible on LinkedIn you need to know that if you do decide to add an image to

  • 04:51

your CV it should be exactly the same as the one in LinkedIn so that you're easy

  • 04:55

to find in my hobbies I wrote surfing the web shopping and taking care of my

  • 04:59

cat under the suggestion of my brother who thought it would be funny and kind

  • 05:05

of show my playful character she did not think it was funny so in my new CV I

  • 05:11

removed all of my hobbies I don't have any hobbies anymore unless you play the

  • 05:16

violin or write poems or read Shakespeare poems from bobbies I don't

  • 05:21

know if you should add them to be honest last thing is the length of the CV

  • 05:25

considering I am an undergraduate one double-sided page is the maximum for the

  • 05:31

overall design she said since everybody's trying to stand out

  • 05:34

sometimes it's nice to just read a nice and well drafted CV simple and easy

  • 05:39

layout no fancy graphics just almost everyone who had kind of let's say an

  • 05:44

out-there CV was kind of criticized one girl she had a CV she designed a

  • 05:48

banner on top of the page so that in a pile of paper her name will show the

  • 05:53

manager said if your CV is bigger than an a4 it will go straight to the bin

  • 05:57

without even reading it because they can't file it so I felt so sorry for her

  • 06:01

but I guess with CVS you truly just need to keep it simple so now let's look at

  • 06:06

the new and improved CV its simpler clean layout first thing I changed is my

  • 06:12

font from Bebas neu to Times New Roman and Arial one thing I forgot to mention

  • 06:17

is you should think of your portfolio and CV as a package so in my portfolio I

  • 06:23

had Bebas neu as my font and in my CV but now I've changed my CV to Times New

  • 06:28

Roman so I should change my portfolio as well to Times New Roman I've added my

  • 06:34

contact info location and my LinkedIn at the top so that it's easy to find one

  • 06:39

mistake I did in my preview CV which was added my full address with

  • 06:43

post code and everything which was kind of a silly mistake and I was thinking to

  • 06:47

myself why would they know that I live in this flat this street name this

  • 06:52

postcode so anyway they just need to know the city you're in on the right

  • 06:56

I've added my LinkedIn QR code which I can't take full credit for a girl at the

  • 07:02

work job she had it and the managers just went crazy

  • 07:05

and she thought it was such a genius idea so I've added that to my CV so

  • 07:09

if you want to add it to your CV all you need to do is install the LinkedIn app

  • 07:13

on your phone and if you click this here you can see your own code or scan other

  • 07:18

codes you can then share the code to yourself by an email and then add it to

  • 07:23

your CV change my profile a bit to be a bit more personal instead of kind of a

  • 07:28

computer response that I had in my previous CV my degree which is

  • 07:32

architecture I made it in bold to make it easy for the employer to know what

  • 07:36

degree I'm studying I've also added what I learned from each employment and my

  • 07:41

    relevant work experience

  • 07:47

more skills and achievement with a bit more info to each and also the software's

  • 07:52

I use in education I've also added the modules that have studied and explained

  • 07:57

how I transferred and how my previous two years were considered as foundation

  • 08:01

so reference is available on request do not add any names or phone numbers in

  • 08:06

your CV you can write the name of your partner your cat your previous employer

  • 08:11

your sister your mother your brother because your employer will keep your CV

  • 08:15

they'll keep these files if they want to keep someone else's name or phone number

  • 08:19

they need to have their permission so that means they have to contact that

  • 08:23

person and ask for permission to keep their contact info so overall I would

  • 08:27

say I prefer this layout a lot more than how it used to be to be honest the last

  • 08:32

one it kind of had more effort and this one was just done in Word maybe in a few

  • 08:38

hours it feels that it's more spread out there's more empty space there's a lot

  • 08:44

more info and detail which I think it's more important than fancy graphics in my

  • 08:49

opinion the CV was a lot easier to write in Word and then to make it in Photoshop

  • 08:54

so I think it just gets a thumbs-up for me so let me know in the comments if

  • 08:58

this video was helpful which layout was your favorite do you think that the

  • 09:02

first CV with icons and graphic was better or this one which is a bit more

  • 09:07

simpler and cleaner also do you have any more tips regarding CVS please let me

  • 09:11

know in the comments and help your fellow friends out there if you guys

  • 09:15

stuck around to the end you know what happened I'll kind of briefly explain

  • 09:19

what happened but I'll explain in more detail in my next video so be sure to

  • 09:24

watch that so basically sister visit me from Saudi

  • 09:27

Arabia I haven't seen her for about four years she was pregnant

  • 09:31

and she also had a three year old girl so I couldn't really spend so much time

  • 09:38

editing or working and also spent time on my uni projects because spending time

  • 09:44

with my sister was a lot more valuable because I don't know when I'll be able

  • 09:48

to see her again and Reem if you're watching this video girl I love you so

  • 09:52

much and I miss you but you ruined my semester I'm just joking so yeah I

  • 09:59

couldn't really upload much and anytime I had I was trying to

  • 10:04

work on this project which was so so so complex it gave me so much stress and I

  • 10:11

literally felt like I couldn't breathe I was running from uni work running to

  • 10:16

doing other things running to family running into this and really sorry but I

  • 10:21

just did not have the time or any energy but I hope I'll be back into it I have

  • 10:26

three videos planned for this week so we're coming back strong I hope you guys

  • 10:30

are not too mad at me thank you so much for sticking around I love you guys so

  • 10:34

much I am Rasha Shrourou and I'll see you next

  • 10:37

    time
