We couldn't find definitions for the word you were looking for.
Or maybe the current language is not supported

  • 00:00

Today we are going to look again at one of your questions,

  • 00:04

this time about some terms that are used in phonetics.

  • 00:09

Lilian says: It was fun but please tell me the difference between phone, phoneme and allophone.

  • 00:21

Well a lot of people think I am an Expert in phonetics but the truth is I'm not,

  • 00:26

I just know a little bit that I think is helpful for people learning English as a foreign language.

  • 00:33

And this question goes a little beyond my knowledge and I don't think people really

  • 00:40

need to worry about it, if their goal is to speak better English.

  • 00:44

But as I understand it a 'phone' is very specific sound and there are hundreds.

  • 00:52

'Phonemes' are the actual symbols that you see on the phonetic chart, the IPA phonetic chart

  • 01:00

and 'allophones' are the groups of phones that are represented by the same phoneme.

  • 01:07

So there may be multiple 'phones' for the same 'phoneme'.

  • 01:11

For example, the different pronunciations of the letter “t” in the words:

  • 01:16

tub, stub, but, butter, and button,

  • 01:23

they are all very similar but slightly different so they are allophones of the phoneme /t/.

  • 01:35

I hope that clears things up, like I said I don’t think English learners need to worry

  • 01:42

too much about this unless you are studying phonetics specifically

  • 01:47

in which case you are watching the wrong videos.

  • 01:51

So everyone, do you find phonetics helpful, or does it over complicate things for you?

  • 01:58

Let me know in the comments below.
