  • 02:13

Black widows are a type of spider perhaps best  known for... well you know, sexual cannibalism.

  • 02:20

That memorable behaviour is where  the Black Widow got its name.

  • 02:24

But you might be surprised to learn  that the rumours of their treachery

  • 02:29

    are greatly exaggerated.

  • 02:31

There are over 30 species of Black Widow,

  • 02:34

ScarJo notwithstanding, but only a few of those  choose to make their lovers a post-coital snack.

  • 02:41

So let's not stereotype these venomous vixens.

  • 02:46

Some Black Widow sport the iconic all black body,

  • 02:49

and the red hour-glass shaped  markings on their abdomen.

  • 02:53

But most species actually come  in a wide variety of colours,

  • 02:57

from brown, to red, to completely black.

  • 03:01

Their life expectancy also  depends on their species.

  • 03:05

Females generally live a lot longer, and  are much, much, larger than the males.

  • 03:12

Black Widows have been around for about a hundred  million years and can be found all over the world.

  • 03:20

They like warm, dry climates, and  prefer to spin their webs in dark,

  • 03:24

sheltered spots close to the ground.

  • 03:27

They feed on flies, mosquitos, beetles,  caterpillars, worms, grasshoppers, and hydra.

  • 03:35

    You know, typical spider food.

  • 03:39

When the Black Widow catches their prey,

  • 03:41

they wrap more silk around them,  and paralyze them with venom.

  • 03:47

Their venom is 15 times more  toxic than a rattlesnakes.

  • 03:52

    Not exactly a peaceful death.

  • 03:57

Black Widows use their sense of smell  for a lot of the same things we do:

  • 04:02

avoiding predators, tracking  down food, and finding shelter.

  • 04:07

But chemoreception is far more important for them.

  • 04:11

It's actually their main means of communication.

  • 04:15

The chemicals used to communicate  are called pheromones.

  • 04:19

Most people associate the word with  scents that make you attractive.

  • 04:23

But in the animal kingdom,  they play a much larger role.

  • 04:28

Pheromones have been used since  some of the very first animals,

  • 04:31

and possibly by other lifeforms before them.

  • 04:36

When it's time to mate, the female Black Widow  releases pheromone-laced silk onto her web.

  • 04:43

Those pheromones evaporate into  the air and float far and wide,

  • 04:48

acting as a siren song to attract potential mates.

  • 04:52

"Come to my web, you cannot resist me!"

  • 04:59

Thank you, that is my impression  of Lolth, Queen of spiders.

  • 05:04

The pheromone signal becomes strong thanks to  a process called sender-receiver co-evolution.

  • 05:11

The females who send the  most attractive chemicals,

  • 05:14

are the most likely to pass their  genes onto the next generation.

  • 05:19

    Enter the male widow.

  • 05:21

Like the females, this little guy has inherited  quite the impressive genes from his fore-spiders:

  • 05:26

the ability to detect female  pheromones in an ocean of chemicals.

  • 05:36

It's thanks to evolution that these two have  mastered the science of sexual communication.

  • 05:45

It's time for this male to show off just how  good he is at picking up on sexy signals.

  • 05:51

If he's actively searching for a  mate, he'll crawl up to a high place

  • 05:55

and wave his arms around a bunch.

  • 05:58

And then, he'll smell them to see  if he's caught any pheromones.

  • 06:02

    Very subtle stuff.

  • 06:04

When he gets a hit, this spider heads straight  to his potential partner, like a moth to a flame.

  • 06:11

Or, you know, like a male  spider to a Black Widow's web.

  • 06:16

Some of you may be thinking, "Oh  no, this poor little spider-man

  • 06:20

he has no clue he's about to become brunch."

  • 06:24

But, remember, only a few  species are sexual cannibals.

  • 06:28

And for those femme fatales  famous for feeding on males?

  • 06:32

Well it's only if they're in the mood for a snack.

  • 06:35

If the male is smart, he'll  mate with her after she's eaten.

  • 06:40

How does he know if she's full?

  • 06:42

    Chemoreception!

  • 06:44

If his sense of smell tells  him that she's starving,

  • 06:47

he instinctively knows not to get any closer.

  • 06:51

The female's web is covered  in pheromonal discharge.

  • 06:55

Now we get to see how those  pheromones work via direct contact.

  • 07:01

When the male touches the web,

  • 07:03

he's sort of tasting the female's pheromones,  and gets kicked into romance mode.

  • 07:09

The chemicals trigger his courting behaviour.

  • 07:11

This doesn't mean wine,  roses, and back rubs. Nope!

  • 07:15

    Black Widows opt for vibrations.

  • 07:19

The female Black Widow doesn't even  care that her mate seems weak and tiny.

  • 07:24

She's more concerned about his moves.

  • 07:26

And although her pheromones may have  communicated she was looking for a mate,

  • 07:31

she may not be entirely sold on this male.

  • 07:35

    Get off!

  • 07:38

Then his plan hits a snag.

  • 07:41

Another, bigger male, who's also been attracted by  the female's pheromones, wants to shoot his shot.

  • 07:48

And he's not wasting any time!

  • 07:50

He immediately mounts the female Black Widow!

  • 07:54

    And it's on!

  • 07:57

The two spiders battle it out  for the female's attention.

  • 08:00

    Who will win?

  • 08:03

Even though the smaller male put in  all the hard work to court the female,

  • 08:07

the new guy has the edge because of his size.

  • 08:11

Please take it somewhere else boys!

  • 08:30

As usual, the bigger male wins out.

  • 08:33

    Now to enjoy his success.

  • 08:35

He tries his luck at inserting his two  palps, the sexual organs around his fangs

  • 08:41

that look like black balls, into the female's  epigynum... the genital opening on her abdomen.

  • 08:50

    Success!

  • 08:52

As soon as the palp goes inside the female,

  • 08:55

it curls up like a spring and  then he gives her his sperm.

  • 09:00

    Aw, how sweet!

  • 09:03

Mating can last up to 20 minutes.

  • 09:05

Right about now, those hypnotic  pheromones start to wear off.

  • 09:10

Will the male end up in the mouth of his mate?

  • 09:13

Or is this his lucky day?

  • 09:17

    He walks away unscathed.

  • 09:19

He managed to survive a tango  with the iconic Black Widow.

  • 09:24

    What a badge of honour!

  • 09:26

Once the male leaves, the female can now  lay her eggs in a gorgeous silky egg sack.

  • 09:38

These sacks can hold up to 300 eggs,

  • 09:41

and the sperm her male partner gave her  can produce up to 10 viable egg sacs.

  • 09:46

Which means, this one tryst could  result in 3,000 new baby spiders.

  • 09:52

    Bye bye bikinis.

  • 09:55

All in all, a highly productive  day for Black Widows.

  • 09:59

    Well done, you two!

  • 10:00

    A credit to your species!

  • 10:15

So what should we talk about next?
