  • 00:14

Welcome to the Arc de Triomphe; one of Paris and France's most famous monuments.

  • 00:22

The Arc is located in the middle of Place de Gaulle, the large circular square and the

  • 00:27

    biggest traffic center in Paris.

  • 00:31

The place, previously known as "Place de l'Etoile", is also called "the Star Square", due to the

  • 00:38

fact that no less than twelve streets emanates from it.

  • 00:44

Standing at the end of Champs-Elysées, the Arc is said to link the old Paris and the

  • 00:49

new Paris, as it is situated between the Louvre on one side, and the financial district with

  • 00:56

its skyscrapers on the other side.

  • 01:01

So why was the Arc de Triomphe built in the first place?

  • 01:04

Not surprisingly, it was built in order to honor military victories.

  • 01:09

It was commissioned by Emperor Napoleon after his decisive victory of the Russo-Austrian

  • 01:16

army in the battle of Austerlitz in 1806.

  • 01:23

As this was during the peak of his fortunes, Napoleon wanted something to honor, not only

  • 01:28

the victory at Austerlitz, but also his previous victories.

  • 01:34

The construction of the Arc began quickly, but the construction process proved to be

  • 01:38

    a long one.

  • 01:41

Laying the foundations alone took two years.

  • 01:45

Napoleon never got to see the Arc finished, due to his defeat in the battle of Waterloo

  • 01:50

    1815.

  • 01:54

After Napoleon lost the battle, he was forced to surrender his throne, and the victorious

  • 01:59

Coalition force which defeated him installed Louis XVIII in his place.

  • 02:06

The new king had Napoleon exiled and the construction of the Arc stopped.

  • 02:13

The construction later began again in 1833 during the reign of Louis-Philippe and was

  • 02:19

    completed 1836.

  • 02:20

The result is what you can see today; a near 50m high and 45m wide masterpiece.

  • 02:30

It is one of the largest Arc of Triumph in the world, placing second, only beaten by

  • 02:36

the Arc in Pyongyang, North Korea.

  • 02:39

The monument was designed by the French architect Jean Chalgrin in 1806.

  • 02:47

Chalgrin later died in 1811, and during the construction process a number of other architects

  • 02:55

    carried out his work.

  • 02:56

The design of the Arc is inspired by the Roman Arch of Titus, located in Rome, but in a more

  • 03:04

    Neo-classical style.

  • 03:05

As you can see, the Arc is stacked with wonderful reliefs and sculptures.

  • 03:11

If you take a look on the outside of the arc, above the large vault, you will see the richly

  • 03:17

sculptured frieze of soldiers which pictures scenes from various battles.

  • 03:23

Among them are Napoleons victory over the Turkish in the battle of Aboukir and when

  • 03:29

Napoleon defeated the Austrians during the Battle of Austerliz.

  • 03:35

Above this, you can see a row of shields.

  • 03:38

These shields honor the major Revolutionary and Napoleonic military victories, as each

  • 03:44

one of the 30 shields carries the name of a specific battle.

  • 03:51

If you later take a look at the inside walls of the Arc, you will see a long list of names.

  • 03:56

This list is the names of French generals.

  • 04:00

If you look closely, you will see that some of the names are underlined.

  • 04:07

This indicates that the general died in battle.

  • 04:13

Also inscribed, on the shorter sides of the four supporting columns, are the names of

  • 04:18

the major battles of the Napoleonic Wars.

  • 04:23

The most prominent feature of the Arc is however the large statues which rests at the base

  • 04:28

    of the columns.

  • 04:31

If you're looking from Champs-Elysées, you will have the most famous one on the right

  • 04:36

side; "Departure of the Volunteers of '92" commonly called "La Marseillaise".

  • 04:44

This sculpture was made by François Rude and depicts the French people rallying against

  • 04:50

    enemies from abroad.

  • 04:52

The citizens, who you can see is it both nude and in classical armor, are united under the

  • 04:59

    Roman goddess of war, Bellona.

  • 05:02

One the left side you can see "The Triumph", made by Jean-Pierre Cortot.

  • 05:08

In the middle you will see Napoleon, as he just conquered another town who surrenders

  • 05:14

    at his feet.

  • 05:17

You will also see the Roman goddess of victory, Victoria, crowning Napoleon with a crown of

  • 05:22

    wreath.

  • 05:23

In the back you can also see a historian, inscribing his new conquering into a stone

  • 05:24

    tablet.

  • 05:25

On the opposite side of "The Triumph", that is the side of the Arc looking away from Champs-Elysées,

  • 05:31

    you will find "Resistance".

  • 05:34

This sculpture shows a naked soldier defending his family, urged on by the Roman goddess

  • 05:39

    of future, Antevorte.

  • 05:41

The last sculpture of the four is called "Peace".

  • 05:47

It shows a man show puts his sword back into his scabbard, under the protection of Minerva,

  • 05:54

    the Roman warrior goddess.

  • 05:57

Behind the man you can see the peasants going back to their ordinary daily work.

  • 06:03

Since the fall of Napoleon in 1815, this sculpture has been interpreted as a celebration of the

  • 06:09

    peace that followed his defeat.

  • 06:14

Beneath the Arc you will also find an interesting grave.

  • 06:19

This grave provides the final rest for one of the many unidentified soldiers who died

  • 06:25

    during the First World War.

  • 06:29

It is known as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

  • 06:32

On the grave a flame burns in memory of the dead, not only for this man, but for all unidentified

  • 06:39

dead soldiers who lost their lives in during the two World Wars.

  • 06:44

The coffin was put in its final resting place on 28 January 1921.

  • 06:52

On top of the grave you can read the inscription "ICI REPOSE UN SOLDAT FRANÇAIS MORT POUR

  • 07:01

LA PATRIE 1914--1918" which means "Here lies a French soldier who died for his fatherland

  • 07:13
