  • 00:00

In this video I want to show you, what is by far the most important secret in sea kayaking.

  • 00:06

It’s the key to quickly developing the skills to be a confident kayaker with peace of mind,

  • 00:11

    in all kinds of conditions.

  • 00:13

I can almost guarantee you it’s not something you have heard before.

  • 00:17

And there is even a good chance that you already learned something which directly contradicts

  • 00:21

what you are about to discover.

  • 00:22

Yet I have seen this one thing transform even experienced kayakers with instructor level

  • 00:28

    certifications.

  • 00:29

And I have seen beginners learn this, and in a few months or less, they are more agile

  • 00:34

in their kayaks than most paddlers with 15 years of experience.

  • 00:38

I know it sounds a bit much.

  • 00:40

But I can’t water this one down.

  • 00:41

I see it making that big of a difference.

  • 00:44

Before I start you should be aware of this.

  • 00:47

If you need to believe that the kayak certification programs have all the answers, and the Inuit

  • 00:53

who invented the kayak and evolved it over thousands of years, couldn’t possibly have

  • 00:58

any wisdom to share, this video is not for you.

  • 01:01

If you need to see nature as a hostile place that is out to get you, this is not for you

  • 01:06

    either.

  • 01:07

You may even find this video painful to watch.

  • 01:10

I’m Paulo from Dancing with the sea.

  • 01:13

And I give sea kayakers the skills they need to feel right at home on the water.

  • 01:17

But not the way you might think.

  • 01:20

People ask me why is it that I only teach kayaking with the Greenland paddle.

  • 01:24

It’s hard to explain in a few words.

  • 01:27

But after watching this video until the end, I think you will understand why.

  • 01:31

Kayakers come to me thinking their skills need a bit more fine tuning.

  • 01:35

When often this issue is much simpler and easier to fix.

  • 01:38

Often they want to use the kayak to explore beautiful places.

  • 01:41

Maybe their low brace doesn’t feel quick and strong enough, and they want to feel less

  • 01:46

anxious when the waves come up.

  • 01:48

Or sometimes they are struggling to keep up with their friends, and they are looking for

  • 01:52

more fitness because, they don’t have the strength to us force.

  • 01:57

If you are using the sea kayak as a way to enjoy your time in nature, this will likely

  • 02:01

be the most important kayak video you ever watch.

  • 02:03

By the way if you are really serious about developing your sea kayak skills and you like

  • 02:08

what we are talking about and you want to go deeper, you might want to get the free

  • 02:13

lesson I made for you on how to outfit your kayak for agility.

  • 02:16

I think you will enjoy it.

  • 02:18

You can get it by cliking the link in the description.

  • 02:21

About 20 years ago I started using the Greenland Paddle.

  • 02:24

I knew nothing about how to use it, but I loved how smooth and quiet it was.

  • 02:28

One day there’s about 6 of us on a paddle.

  • 02:31

The waves were a bit bigger than what I was used to.

  • 02:34

    I was still a beginner.

  • 02:35

Of Course I’m the only one with a Greenland paddle.

  • 02:38

And i’m feeling some pressure to prove it’s worth because at that time, people didn’t

  • 02:42

    think much of it.

  • 02:43

They thought people just use it to be different.

  • 02:45

I’m at the back of the group, and I get on top of a wave, start surfing it a bit when

  • 02:50

I lose my balance and almost instantly end up in the water.

  • 02:53

I’m rushing to get back in the kayak.

  • 02:54

It was embarrassing enough to capsize, I wanted to get back in before someone had a chance

  • 02:55

    to help me.

  • 02:56

By the time they got to me I was back in my kayak.

  • 02:57

    They were impressed with that.

  • 02:58

But the leader of the group had to say it.

  • 02:59

It’s your paddle, you can’t brace with that thing, it’s too skinny.

  • 03:00

That’s what started my journey to master the Greenland Paddle.

  • 03:03

    I loved paddling with it.

  • 03:04

If only I could learn to keep myself out of the water.

  • 03:08

I decided that learning to roll was the solution.

  • 03:11

I would watch a video demonstration of a young Inuit doing a roll, and I would go try it

  • 03:16

    in my kayak.

  • 03:17

It did not work at all no matter how much I practiced.

  • 03:20

All I did was fall out of my kayak and swim.

  • 03:23

    And get freezing cold.

  • 03:25

While watching carefully to find that subtle difference that would help me succeed, I had

  • 03:29

    this realization.

  • 03:30

In the video, the kayaker was moving his body with a lot more range of motion than I had

  • 03:35

    ever seen before.

  • 03:37

You just don’t see kayakers move like that.

  • 03:39

Now I think of it as wearing the kayak.

  • 03:42

When you are wearing something it doesn’t hinder your range of motion, unless it’s

  • 03:46

    a cheap suit.

  • 03:47

    And it moves with you.

  • 03:48

You don’t have to worry about a good fitting pair of pants falling off when you start walking.

  • 03:52

That’s what i mean by wearing.

  • 03:54

What I saw, was the young Inuit moving his body to make the rolls effortless.

  • 03:59

He had perfect control of the kayak, and also could move his body naturally with full range

  • 04:04

    of motion.

  • 04:06

Once I figured out how to wear my kayak, everything completely changed for me.

  • 04:10

There was no more wondering if the Greenland paddle is good enough, because nobody using

  • 04:11

a Euro blade could do what I was doing.

  • 04:12

And 20 years later I’m still discovering ways that this simple shift transforms how

  • 04:16

    I feel on the water.

  • 04:17

And how it helps me move with the waves more efficiently.

  • 04:20

So what does it actually look like when you wear your kayak?

  • 04:24

You may have been told to tighten your footpegs until both your knees are making contact with

  • 04:29

    the kayak.

  • 04:30

    It feels secure.

  • 04:31

Any movement of the hips moves the kayak.

  • 04:35

The problem is you can’t rotate your thighs without rocking the kayak.

  • 04:39

That may seem like a good thing but it has serious limitations.

  • 04:43

If you can’t move your thighs you can ‘t use them to power the forward stroke.

  • 04:47

Which means less speed and less endurance.

  • 04:49

I had a kayaker come to me with limited upper body strength, and it was preventing her from

  • 04:55

being able to paddle any distance with a group because she just couldn’t keep up.

  • 04:59

After she learned to use her hips for power, she not only started going faster, but it

  • 05:03

also took the pressure off the arms and shoulders, and eliminated much of her pain.

  • 05:08

It allows her to do what she loves, when previously she thought her body just could not handle

  • 05:14

    kayaking.

  • 05:15

For bracing, you don’t have to react with a quick enough smack on the water to stop

  • 05:19

    a capsize.

  • 05:20

I was paddling with a fairly inexperienced paddler one time when the waves were starting

  • 05:24

    to build up.

  • 05:25

We were broadside to the waves and it was obvious he was getting more and more tense.

  • 05:30

Every few waves he would lose his balance and do a quick brace to avoid going over.

  • 05:34

I rafted up with him and told him to leave the paddle in the water at the end of his

  • 05:38

forward stroke, until the wave washes over.

  • 05:41

The Greenland paddle is perfectly suited for this because it moves well in the water, and

  • 05:46

gives you support as it glides smoothly.

  • 05:48

Most people wait to be out of balance and then do a brace to regain balance.

  • 05:55

Every brace wears on their nerves and brings them closer to a capsize.

  • 05:59

I saw him go from increasingly scared, to completely relaxed with a smile on his face.

  • 06:05

    The transformation was instant.

  • 06:07

Although he didn’t have to learn any new skills, he now looked like a kayaker with

  • 06:12

    many years of experience.

  • 06:14

The Greenland Paddle allows you to turn your forward stroke into an instant brace.

  • 06:19

A lot of kayakers want to move the paddle on top of a bigger breaking wave to avoid

  • 06:24

having the wave push their paddle deep underwater.

  • 06:27

    That’s a Euro blade fear.

  • 06:30

With the Greenland paddle you want the wave to bury it.

  • 06:33

It’s what holds it firmly in place to ensure you don’t get knocked over.

  • 06:36

That’s a pretty big deal when you’re getting thrashed around by the waves.

  • 06:39

Keeping the paddle high on the wave actually helps the waves push you over.

  • 06:42

For turning, that extra range of motion you get from moving your hips means less pressure

  • 06:43

    on your arms and shoulders.

  • 06:44

    No more shoulder pain.

  • 06:45

It also allows you to place the paddle further back where it makes a more effective turn.

  • 06:46

Instead of a high brace that almost nobody can do.

  • 06:47

And puts you at risk of tearing your shoulders off, you can simply put your back to the water,

  • 06:51

and rotate the kayak off of you.

  • 06:53

    You just float there.

  • 06:54

If you can’t move your hips back before rotating the kayak, you can’t do that.

  • 07:00

The kayak just pushes your head underwater while you try to force yourself up for a life

  • 07:05

    saving breath.

  • 07:06

Believe me, It’s a different feeling.

  • 07:08

And ofcourse this is also what makes rolling easy.

  • 07:11

Again it’s not just the paddle, it’s not just the body position, it’s both working

  • 07:16

    together.

  • 07:17

You rotate to put your back to the water, rotate your hips to take the kayak off of

  • 07:22

    you.

  • 07:23

The paddle gives you support as your body moves naturally.

  • 07:25

These are not difficult to learn techniques to show off how strong and athletic you are.

  • 07:30

It’s techniques designed to keep the hunter safe in extreme conditions, so he can keep

  • 07:35

    coming home to his family.

  • 07:36

So the answer the question of why I only teach the Greenland paddle?

  • 07:41

It’s not just about the paddle, and how it moves through the water.

  • 07:44

It’s not just about how you move your body differently so it feels more natural, and

  • 07:49

gives you more of the freedom of movement which gives you agility.

  • 07:52

It’s not just about how to use the water to support you instead of trying to resist

  • 07:57

    with force.

  • 07:58

The genius of the Inuit techniques is to put all these elements together in a way where

  • 08:03

you’re not an outsider in a hostile environment, but you actually feel like you belong there.

  • 08:09

With the agility of an amphibian.

  • 08:11

I don’t know how I could teach kayaking in a different way?

  • 08:14

To review, the most important thing is wearing your kayak.

  • 08:19

Having a fit where you can move your thighs to rotate your body, and still be able to

  • 08:23

    rotate the kayak.

  • 08:24

    All without falling out.

  • 08:26

It’s this ability to rotate your thighs, and rotate the kayak independently that gives

  • 08:31

you the biggest breakthrough in your kayak skills.

  • 08:34

And the best way to take advantage of this newfound motion is to use the Greenland paddle

  • 08:38

because it’s perfectly suited to move with you, through the water in a smooth controlled

  • 08:43

    way.

  • 08:44

It’s what allows you to use the force of the water to help you instead of fighting

  • 08:47

    with it.

  • 08:48

    It’s more like a dance.

  • 08:49

That’s why I call it dancing with the sea.

  • 08:51

When you put all this together you are not like a tourist visiting a hostile place.

  • 08:55

You feel like you belong there.

  • 08:57

If you got nothing else from this video I hope you come to realize that we can learn

  • 09:00

a lot from the wisdom of the endigenous cultures.

  • 09:03

I know some people will say if these techniques work so well, why is it that we developed

  • 09:09

a different paddling style that became so popular.

  • 09:11

I don’t know the answer, but I can imagine that we saw the potential of the kayak and

  • 09:17

decided a bigger blade would be better, and developed the skills to make it work.

  • 09:22

I can imagine that we did not take the time to make sure we understood what the Inuit

  • 09:28

    had created with the kayak.

  • 09:30

We never got the true genius of it.

  • 09:32

And it’s my mission to make sure the world understands this.

  • 09:35

If you would like to get started with with wearing your kayak, I created a free online
