Some people are saying that Paul was a false apostle and that he taught people not to obey

  • 00:05

God’s commandments, but is that really the truth?

  • 00:07

It's time to UNLEARN the lies.

  • 00:10

    UNLEARN

  • 00:13

    Hey, welcome to UNLEARN.

  • 00:16

My name is Lex, and I'd like to invite you to join us each week as we UNLEARN the lies

  • 00:20

and dig deeper into the truth of God's Word.

  • 00:23

    Now, let's get started.

  • 00:24

Some people believe Paul was a real apostle, but think he taught contrary to the law of

  • 00:29

God and they use his words to nullify the commandments in the Torah.

  • 00:33

Other people also think Paul taught against the Torah, and because of this, they label

  • 00:37

    him a false apostle.

  • 00:38

However, I believe both of these groups are in error concerning Paul.

  • 00:42

Not only does the Bible portray Paul as an apostle, but it also shows him to be one of

  • 00:46

the most educated Torah scholars of his day.

  • 00:49

He studied under Rabbi Gamaliel the Elder, one of the leaders of the Sanhedrin in the

  • 00:53

first century and the grandson of Hillel the Elder who was one of the most noteworthy Rabbis

  • 00:58

    in Jewish history.

  • 00:59

“I am indeed a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city at the feet of

  • 01:06

Gamaliel, taught according to the strictness of our fathers' law, and was zealous toward

  • 01:10

God as you all are today.”

  • 01:11

    - Acts 22:3

  • 01:12

Paul was a disciple of Gamaliel, which meant he was under the strictest Torah teacher of

  • 01:16

    his day.

  • 01:17

It is said that Gamaliel required all of his disciples to memorize the entire Old Testament

  • 01:21

by their 12th birthday, which indicates that Paul would have had the entire Old Testament

  • 01:25

    memorized.

  • 01:26

The Talmud describes Gamaliel as bearing the titles Nasi and Rabban being the president

  • 01:30

of the Great Sanhedrin in Jerusalem.

  • 01:32

He held a senior position in the highest court in Jerusalem, and has the reputation of being

  • 01:36

one of the greatest Torah teachers in Jewish history.

  • 01:38

In fact, Gamaliel is even noted in the Bible as being a man respected by all the people,

  • 01:43

and he said some interesting things concerning Peter and the other apostles.

  • 01:46

“Then one in the council stood up, a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law held

  • 01:51

in respect by all the people, and commanded them to put the apostles outside for a little

  • 01:56

    while.

  • 01:57

And he said to them: "Men of Israel, take heed to yourselves what you intend to do regarding

  • 02:01

    these men.

  • 02:02

For some time ago Theudas rose up, claiming to be somebody.

  • 02:06

A number of men, about four hundred, joined him.

  • 02:09

He was slain, and all who obeyed him were scattered and came to nothing.

  • 02:13

After this man, Judas of Galilee rose up in the days of the census, and drew away many

  • 02:18

    people after him.

  • 02:19

He also perished, and all who obeyed him were dispersed.

  • 02:23

And now I say to you, keep away from these men and let them alone; for if this plan or

  • 02:27

this work is of men, it will come to nothing; but if it is of God, you cannot overthrow

  • 02:33

it - lest you even be found to fight against God.”

  • 02:35

    - Acts 5:34-39

  • 02:36

The passage shows Gamaliel presenting an argument against killing the apostles, by reminding

  • 02:41

the council about the previous revolts of Theudas and Judas which ended quickly because

  • 02:45

    they were not from God.

  • 02:47

Gamaliel's advice was accepted by the council and the apostles were released.

  • 02:51

The Bible portrays Paul as being violently opposed to the Gospel, so much that he was

  • 02:56

persecuting and putting the followers of Yeshua in prison.

  • 02:58

In fact, he was one of the witnesses who approved of the stoning of Stephen.

  • 03:02

“and they cast him out of the city and stoned him.

  • 03:04

And the witnesses laid down their clothes at the feet of a young man named Saul.

  • 03:08

And they stoned Stephen as he was calling on God and saying, "Lord Jesus, receive my

  • 03:14

    spirit…

  • 03:15

Now Saul was consenting to his death.

  • 03:16

At that time a great persecution arose against the church which was at Jerusalem; and they

  • 03:20

were all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles…

  • 03:25

As for Saul, he made havoc of the church, entering every house, and dragging off men

  • 03:29

and women, committing them to prison.”

  • 03:31

    - Acts 7:58-59, 8:1-3

  • 03:32

So, how could this man who was strongly persecuting the Church become one of the leading apostles

  • 03:36

and an evangelist for Yeshua? the Bible tells us that Paul had a powerful and personal encounter

  • 03:41

    with the risen Messiah.

  • 03:42

“Then Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord,

  • 03:47

went to the high priest and asked letters from him to the synagogues of Damascus, so

  • 03:52

that if he found any who were of the Way, whether men or women, he might bring them

  • 03:55

    bound to Jerusalem.

  • 03:57

As he journeyed he came near Damascus, and suddenly a light shone around him from heaven.

  • 04:01

Then he fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to him, "Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting

  • 04:07

    Me?"

  • 04:08

And he said, "Who are You, Lord?"

  • 04:10

Then the Lord said, "I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting.

  • 04:12

It is hard for you to kick against the goads."

  • 04:14

So he, trembling and astonished, said, "Lord, what do You want me to do?"

  • 04:19

Then the Lord said to him, "Arise and go into the city, and you will be told what you must

  • 04:23

    do."

  • 04:24

    - Acts 9:1-6

  • 04:25

    This encounter changed Paul forever.

  • 04:26

From this point forward he began teaching about Yeshua and His death and resurrection.

  • 04:30

He started reaching out to the Gentiles with the Gospel, and He partnered with other apostles

  • 04:35

    in spreading the Gospel.

  • 04:36

He even bravely faced persecution and death for the sake of the Gospel.

  • 04:41

This fact alone shows that he was genuine in his belief, because a fake believer would

  • 04:44

not die for something he did not believe in.

  • 04:47

We also have the witness of a disciple named Ananias who heard the voice of God tell Him

  • 04:51

that He has chosen Paul to be a vessel for the Gospel, and God confirmed to him that

  • 04:56

Paul saw Yeshua on the road to Damascus.

  • 04:58

“Now there was a certain disciple at Damascus named Ananias; and to him the Lord said in

  • 05:03

    a vision, "Ananias."

  • 05:04

And he said, "Here I am, Lord."

  • 05:07

So the Lord said to him, "Arise and go to the street called Straight, and inquire at

  • 05:11

the house of Judas for one called Saul of Tarsus, for behold, he is praying…

  • 05:16

Then Ananias answered, "Lord, I have heard from many about this man, how much harm he

  • 05:21

has done to Your saints in Jerusalem.

  • 05:22

And here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who call on Your name."

  • 05:27

But the Lord said to him, "Go, for he is a chosen vessel of Mine to bear My name before

  • 05:32

Gentiles, kings, and the children of Israel.

  • 05:35

For I will show him how many things he must suffer for My name's sake."

  • 05:39

And Ananias went his way and entered the house; and laying his hands on him he said, "Brother

  • 05:44

Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you came, has sent me that

  • 05:48

you may receive your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit."”

  • 05:51

    - Acts 9:10-11, 13-17

  • 05:52

This shows us that Paul was personally chosen by Yeshua to be an apostle.

  • 05:55

So, we can’t argue that he was a fake apostle or that he was trying to be deceitful and

  • 06:00

destroy Christianity from within, because the Bible testifies that he was chosen by

  • 06:04

    Yeshua.

  • 06:05

So, now we need to look at what Paul taught and see if he was teaching against the Law

  • 06:08

of God as many people seem to think.

  • 06:10

Paul was placed on trial and accused of teaching against the Law of God, but listen to his

  • 06:14

    own defense.

  • 06:15

“When he had come, the Jews who had come down from Jerusalem stood about and laid many

  • 06:20

serious complaints against Paul, which they could not prove, while he answered for himself,

  • 06:25

"Neither against the law of the Jews, nor against the temple, nor against Caesar have

  • 06:29

I offended in anything at all."

  • 06:31

    - Acts 25:7-8

  • 06:32

Paul said he had done nothing against the Law or the Temple.

  • 06:34

He did not believe that he was teaching against the Law of God, and he did not think he was

  • 06:38

leading others to violate the Torah.

  • 06:41

Listen to what else he said.

  • 06:42

“Therefore, King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision, but declared first

  • 06:46

to those in Damascus and in Jerusalem, and throughout all the region of Judea, and then

  • 06:51

to the Gentiles, that they should repent, turn to God, and do works befitting repentance.

  • 06:57

For these reasons the Jews seized me in the temple and tried to kill me.

  • 07:01

Therefore, having obtained help from God, to this day I stand, witnessing both to small

  • 07:06

and great, saying no other things than those which the prophets and Moses said would come

  • 07:10

    - that the Christ would suffer, that He would be the first to rise from the dead, and would

  • 07:16

proclaim light to the Jewish people and to the Gentiles.”

  • 07:19

    - Acts 26:19-23

  • 07:20

He said he was telling Gentiles to repent and turn to God and do good works fitting

  • 07:23

    of repentance.

  • 07:25

He wasn’t tell Gentiles to reject the Law of God, he was telling them to repent from

  • 07:28

their sins and do the good things that God says to do.

  • 07:32

He was telling them to obey God.

  • 07:33

Now, listen to what Peter said about Paul.

  • 07:35

“and consider that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation - as also our beloved

  • 07:40

brother Paul, according to the wisdom given to him, has written to you, as also in all

  • 07:45

his epistles, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things HARD TO UNDERSTAND,

  • 07:51

which untaught and unstable people TWIST TO THEIR OWN DESTRUCTION, as they do also the

  • 07:56

    rest of the Scriptures.

  • 07:58

You therefore, beloved, since you know this beforehand, beware lest you also fall from

  • 08:02

your own steadfastness, being led away with the ERROR OF THE LAWLESS”

  • 08:07

    - 2 Peter 3:15-17

  • 08:08

Peter upholds Paul as a beloved brother, then he explains that some of the things Paul wrote

  • 08:12

in his letters are difficult to understand and people twist those things, which he calls

  • 08:17

being led astray by the error of the lawless.

  • 08:19

He is saying that people who don’t understand Paul will twist his words into lawlessness.

  • 08:23

I would argue that people misunderstand Paul because they don’t understand the Torah.

  • 08:28

Peter said those people are “untaught and unstable” and they also twist other Scriptures

  • 08:33

    as well.

  • 08:34

They don’t understand the Torah, so they can’t understand Paul either.

  • 08:37

Now, lets look at what Paul said in response to people thinking that faith nullifies the

  • 08:41

    law.

  • 08:42

“Do we then make void the law through faith?

  • 08:44

    Certainly not!

  • 08:45

On the contrary, we establish the law.”

  • 08:47

    - Romans 3:31

  • 08:48

Right here Paul plainly tells us that faith does not nullify the law, and that if we walk

  • 08:52

in faith we establish the law.

  • 08:54

He also argues against people who think grace is a license to sin.

  • 08:58

    “What shall we say then?

  • 09:00

Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound?

  • 09:02

    Certainly not!

  • 09:03

How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?”

  • 09:06

    - Romans 6:1-2

  • 09:07

The grace of God does not give us a license to sin.

  • 09:09

We have died to sin, we cannot continue walking in sin.

  • 09:12

We have been saved from sin by grace through faith, how can we keep walking in sin?

  • 09:17

Paul goes on to explain that a carnal mind does not submit to the law of God.

  • 09:21

“For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.

  • 09:27

Because the CARNAL MIND is enmity against God; for it is NOT SUBJECT TO THE LAW OF GOD,

  • 09:32

    nor indeed can be.

  • 09:34

So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

  • 09:37

But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you.

  • 09:42

Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.”

  • 09:45

    - Romans 8:6-9

  • 09:46

Why is the carnal mind unable to submit to the Law of God?

  • 09:49

Paul explains that the law is spiritual.

  • 09:51

“For we know that the law is spiritual…”

  • 09:53

    - Romans 7:14

  • 09:54

This is why those who walk according to the flesh cannot please God.

  • 09:57

We must walk according to the Spirit, and the Spirit enables us to live out the Law

  • 10:01

of God, because the Law is spiritual.

  • 10:04

Paul was a genius, and he understood the Law much better than we do.

  • 10:08

I equate understanding Paul on Torah matters as similar to understanding Einstein on Physics.

  • 10:13

If we have the proper understanding of the subject matter, we will be able to better

  • 10:16

    understand what is being said.

  • 10:18

You can’t understand Einstein if you don’t have the proper education in math and science.

  • 10:22

Likewise, you can’t understand Paul if you don’t have the proper education in the Law

  • 10:25

    and Prophets.

  • 10:27

Paul was an apostle who was personally chosen by Yeshua.

  • 10:30

He was a Torah scholar, and never taught anything contrary to the Law of God, but remember Peter’s

  • 10:34

warning that untaught people twist his words into lawlessness.
