  • 00:00

Last time, we talked about the Kardashev  Scale and looked at type 0 civilizations.

  • 00:06

If you haven't seen those videos, you should check  them out, link will be in the description below.

  • 00:12

Today, we are going to discuss what  a type 1 civilization would be like.

  • 00:16

But before we begin, don’t forget to subscribe  to our channel and join us on this epic journey!

  • 00:29

According to the Kardashev scale, a type 1  civilization would have mastered all the energy

  • 00:35

available to its home planet including energy  that reaches the planet from its home star.

  • 00:41

It is for this reason, we sometimes refer  to this type of civilization as a planetary

  • 00:46

civilization. In terms of its energy use, a type  one civilization can consume around 10^17 watts.

  • 00:55

This would be possible since  it extracts its energy and raw

  • 00:58

materials from fusion power rather than fission.

  • 01:02

It also utilizes a vast pool of hydrogen  available in its oceans as well as other

  • 01:08

renewable energy resources such as  solar, hydro, thermal, and wind.

  • 01:14

So it's not far-fetched to think that  individuals living in this type of society

  • 01:19

probably won't have to worry  about their electric bills

  • 01:23

simply because of the total efficiency at  which a type 1 civilization would harness it.

  • 01:29

Now, being able to harness all of its planet's

  • 01:32

energy would also mean that it would  have control over all natural forces.

  • 01:37

According to Physicist Michio Kaku, a planetary  civilization should be able to control things such

  • 01:43

as the weather, earthquakes, and volcanoes.  Furthermore, it would even influence global

  • 01:49

flora and fauna, change the geological  makeup of its planet, and a lot more.

  • 01:54

But perhaps a very cool  feature of this civilization

  • 01:58

would be its ability to build  cities on top of its oceans.

  • 02:02

Just imagine how cool it could  be to live in a city like that!

  • 02:07

So when will humanity be able to live on  ocean cities and control the entire earth?

  • 02:12

Well, first, we would need to  boost our current energy production

  • 02:16

over 100,000 to 1,000,000 times  more than what we have now.

  • 02:21

This means fossil fuels and other nonrenewable  resources that we heavily rely on have got to go.

  • 02:28

So, it will most likely take another 100-200  or so years for us to reach type one status.

  • 02:35

This is of course, according to some  calculations based on our current progression.

  • 02:40

As of now, we are about 0.75 on the  Kardashev Scale according to most experts.

  • 02:46

So it is very likely that  we should reach type 1 soon.

  • 02:50

In fact, Nikolai Kardashev himself  described Type 1 civilization as

  • 02:55

having “technological level close to the  level presently attained on the Earth”.

  • 03:01

But Ofcourse, this is all based on whether  humanity will be able to survive without any

  • 03:06

natural disasters or nuclear wars that could  completely destroy us all in the near future.

  • 03:12

Now, a type 1 civilization's level of advancements  might be hard to believe but compared to the

  • 03:19

advances beyond a type 1 civilization, these  are just basic and primitive levels of control.

  • 03:25

As a type 1 civilization  advances to type 1.1 and beyond,

  • 03:30

it will be able to start space travel  within its solar system to nearby planets.

  • 03:35

It would also be able to colonize  the moons of its home planet.

  • 03:39

Perhaps even begin to terraform some  of the planets in its solar system.

  • 03:44

Apart from this, as a type 1  civilization gets more advanced,

  • 03:48

it may even be able to manipulate its  genetic makeup and cure most diseases.

  • 03:54

And at a certain level of advancement, a type  1 will begin to set its eyes on its home star

  • 04:00

and start to come up with a plan  to extract all of its energy.

  • 04:04

It is at this stage it would have begun  its transition to a type 2 civilization.

  • 04:09

But that's a topic for another time!
