  • 00:24

The Den was a children's TV programme that ran on Ireland's public broadcaster RTÉ from

  • 00:30

    1986 to 2010.

  • 00:32

My family didn't pay for anything else so all we got was like the three or four public

  • 00:38

broadcast channels, so I watched a lot of the Den when I was young - because there was

  • 00:42

    literally nothing else.

  • 00:44

The Den was filmed in a tiny studio with a tiny budget, where a host and some puppets

  • 00:49

would introduce cartoons, like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, He-Man, She-Ra, Bravestar...

  • 00:56

I'd just like to point out they were airing these when I was watching in the early 2000's,

  • 01:01

so well past their sell-by date.

  • 01:04

Well, maybe not the Ninja Turtles - that was alright.

  • 01:06

They would also have guests on, or play quizes with listeners over the phone and show off

  • 01:11

    artwork drawn by the audience.

  • 01:13

The typical kid-show fair - but the Den is best remembered for being pretty chaotic,

  • 01:19

often devolving into the host frantically attempting to restore order, and their composure

  • 01:24

as the puppeteers were shouting over eachother.

  • 01:35

Some of the noteworthy puppets include Dustin the Turkey, who was present for the vast majority

  • 01:40

of the show's lifetime, who became such a cultural phenomenom we sent him off to represent

  • 01:46

us in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2008.

  • 01:58

There was also Rodge and Podge, who were evil and would fight the show's cast and try to

  • 02:04

    eat the dog.

  • 02:05

They would later move on to adult programming.

  • 02:12

That's kind of like if Sesame Street had a light night show where

  • 02:33

Elmo smoked crack and threw Oscar into a trash compacter.

  • 02:37

This brings us to the topic of today's video - Kevin from Galway.

  • 02:42

Kevin was a mysterious listener who called into the Den in 2004, in a moment that has

  • 02:48

    since gone down in infamy.

  • 02:50

At this time the Den was hosted by Francis Boylan, Dustin the Turkey and Snotser.

  • 02:55

There was an ongoing game called What's Snots - where Snotser would imagine a person.

  • 03:01

place, thing or animal and the listeners who called in had to guess what he was thinking

  • 03:06

of by asking him questions to narrow it down.

  • 03:09

If they got it right, they won something like a bike.

  • 03:12

It was the first of April 2004, and there were two listeners queued for the game - Amy

  • 03:17

from Cavan and Kevin from Galway.

  • 03:20

Years later, Francie Boylan explained that he would talk to the kids over the phone for

  • 03:24

a bit before the game went live, during which he got the sense that maybe Kevin didn't really

  • 03:30

understand the premise of the game.

  • 03:32

Unfortunately, they only had so much time before they were live, and so...

  • 03:46

So, it is instantly obvious that Kevin has no clue how this game is played.

  • 04:04

Actually I'm not even sure if he realises he's even playing a game.

  • 04:07

His opening question, "where'd you get your shades?" has since gone on to be a minorly

  • 04:11

popular referential joke in Ireland, where the clip of the segment went viral - largely

  • 04:16

due to Boylan's struggles to maintain his composure and progress the game along.

  • 04:49

Boylan's eyes can be seen darting around throughout the segment and he later said that this was

  • 04:53

because he suspected that Kevin was an actor and that the crew were playing a little April

  • 04:58

    Fool's prank on him.

  • 05:00

He keeps looking at members of the crew to figure out what's going on.

  • 05:43

At this point Dustin the Turkey is missing from the frame, having left to ask the producer

  • 05:49

    if this is a joke.

  • 05:51

    It isn't.

  • 05:52

Kevin is a real caller and they have to try to continue the game with him, even if Kevin

  • 05:56

apparently has better things to be doing.

  • 06:06

Despite his laughter, Boylan bravely attempts to re-explain the game to Kevin half-way through

  • 06:33

    the segment

  • 07:20

Francie Boylan has gone on to say he was only in the job for about 7 months at this point,

  • 07:25

and was a little worried about how things were getting out of hand.

  • 07:28

Maybe his job as kid's TV presenter could be in jeopardy if he demonstrates he can't

  • 07:34

    keep control of it.

  • 07:35

He attempts to rectify the matter, before losing control again a mere second later.

  • 07:59

At this point, assumedly in a bid not to be outdone by Kevin, Amy, who has so far seemingly

  • 08:05

    understood

  • 08:24

the game, begins to shit the bed.

  • 08:47

Sounds like even Snotser is starting to laugh now.

  • 08:59

Well, these two idiot kids aren't going to figure this out so let's just end the segment

  • 09:03

    and get out of here.

  • 09:08

So they both win the bikes, despite not actually winning the game.

  • 09:11

They were so bad that the show basically had to forfeit them in a way that wouldn't upset

  • 09:17

their feelings I guess, especially after this fella just laughed at them the whole time.

  • 09:22

But there's a twist to the story.

  • 09:23

We now know who Kevin from Galway was.

  • 09:27

Thirteen years later, in 2017, Francie Boylan found Kevin, now 24, and invited him on to

  • 09:34

his radio show to discuss the now infamous clip.

  • 09:54

    the man himself.

  • 09:56

Seems like a nice fella actually.

  • 10:13

so why didn't Kevin get it?

  • 10:15

    What was going on?

  • 10:16

Well, bizarrely Kevin explains he had actually been watching the game for weeks before calling

  • 10:22

in, and that the issues he experienced on air were due to a faultering telephone.

  • 10:27

He was struggling to hear Boylan and was apparently simultaneously searching for a better phone,

  • 10:33

which explains why he asks the presenter to momentarily pause the game while he does something

  • 10:38

    else.

  • 10:39

Although, y'know, that still doesn't really explain his questions or how he didn't seem

  • 10:44

to know how the game was played.

  • 10:46

He admitted it himself, he was watching it

  • 11:34

    for weeks!

  • 11:48

    So did Kevin get his

  • 12:03

    bike in

  • 12:21

    the end?

  • 12:23

    Ungrateful bastard.

  • 12:26

He does also explain it apparently took like 7 months to actually receive the bike.

  • 12:32

Francie Boylan talks about how giving away both bikes to get out of the segment was actually

  • 12:38

    a problem.

  • 12:39

To end the interview, the two take a trip down memory lane and play another game of

  • 12:52

'What's Snots' for old times sake.

  • 12:54

I'm going to be honest, I still think he doesn't fucking get it.

  • 13:19

    It's a bike, Kevin, it's a

  • 14:08

    fucking bike, c'mon.

  • 14:17

So thirteen years later, Kevin from Galway hasn't changed much.

  • 14:21

He's apparently still living in Galway too!

  • 14:24

On his way out, they give him a nice parting gift.

  • 14:48

Also looking at Francie Boylan's Twitter it looks like the pair went out and got pissed

  • 14:52

    after the show.

  • 14:53

Well, isn't that a nice little story.

  • 14:54

I hope Kevin is doing well, I wouldn't enlist him for a quiz team or anything but I'm sure

  • 14:59

    he's a decent fella.

  • 15:00

And that's about all I have to say about Kevin from Galway - so please join me next time

  • 15:05

I decide to look into what is ultimately an asinine story - and until then, can I get

  • 15:12

    an amen?

  • 15:13

Can I get a hell yeah?

  • 15:15

Can I get a subscribe and a follow on Twitter?

  • 15:19

Yeah that's the stuff, alright I'll cya.
