If you want to find out how to get an exclusive special pack,

  • 00:05

then stay tuned till the end to find out more.

  • 00:09

    Here's a little situation.

  • 00:10

Say you agreed to split the country into two.

  • 00:13

The North part has no slavery, the South part does.

  • 00:17

All right, that's fine. It's warm in the south anyway.

  • 00:20

I'm sure we have a TON of arable land out we-

  • 00:23

*the West has scorched, useless deserts*

  • 00:24

    Oh...

  • 00:25

    Okay, new plan!

  • 00:27

The land west of Texas is a useless desert that we can't raise cotton in.

  • 00:31

So how do we expand our system if we can't go west?

  • 00:35

    Solution: go south.

  • 00:37

    The Caribbean,

  • 00:38

    The Caribbean, and Mexico,

  • 00:39

The Caribbean, and Mexico, and Central America,

  • 00:41

The Caribbean, and Mexico, and Central America, and parts of South America.

  • 00:43

    "Oh boy..."

  • 00:44

This is the story of a secret society who wished for the South to conquer the Caribbean,

  • 00:49

all to get a one-up on the North.

  • 00:51

This is the tale of the Golden Circle.

  • 00:54

    AlternateHistoryHub Presents...

  • 00:58

"What if the Golden Circle Actually Existed?"

  • 01:03

It's 1857, and the South can see the writing on the wall.

  • 01:06

Their economic system of plantation slavery is being strangled.

  • 01:10

Not just by Abolitionists or the North,

  • 01:13

    but by geography itself.

  • 01:15

When the compromise was created to split the U.S by the Maxon-Dixon Line,

  • 01:19

it was practically useless to the South.

  • 01:22

And so, a society was formed by men across the United States

  • 01:26

who wished for the South not only to rebel against the North,

  • 01:30

but also to expand itself by force to compete with it.

  • 01:34

The South, once it got its independence, would simply just control, well, everything.

  • 01:40

Mexico, Central America, Cuba, Puerto Rico, the smaller islands, chunks of Colombia and Venezuela for good measure.

  • 01:46

    A central Caribbean Empire.

  • 01:49

This new proposed country was to be called "The Golden Circle".

  • 01:52

The new capital was not even going to be in Richmond or Montgomery. (Or in Atlanta, which lies between.)

  • 01:56

It was going to be... Havana.

  • 01:59

Yes, this was a real idea.

  • 02:01

The Caribbean was born, and largely only colonized, because of its slave-based sugar plantations.

  • 02:07

Jamaica, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, for cash crops historically for Britain and France before Abolition.

  • 02:14

(Or horrific slave revolt in Haiti's case.)

  • 02:17

Spanish-owned Cuba and Puerto Rico still relied on slavery.

  • 02:21

Cuba was the largest sugar producer in the world,

  • 02:24

and didn't stop the importation of African slaves until 1867.

  • 02:29

    70 years after the U.S!

  • 02:31

So there was a market, you could say.

  • 02:34

This is one of those alternate scenarios that's pretty implausible, but it's such an interesting idea,

  • 02:40

    it doesn't hurt to imagine.

  • 02:42

Don't take this video as a "This certainly would have happened" thing,

  • 02:47

think of it as an exploration of just one possibility, using the international relations of the time.

  • 02:53

So! What if the Golden Circle actually existed?

  • 02:57

There's one... major hurdle that needs to happen first for this to even be possible.

  • 03:03

Step 1: The Confederates being the victor.

  • 03:07

The South, somehow, wins the Civil War.

  • 03:10

I've already done a video about this so I'm not going to reiterate. Long story short:

  • 03:13

It's basically impossible for the South to win militarily.

  • 03:17

Lower population, less industrialization, all that fun stuff.

  • 03:21

The North would need to just have such low morale, they agree to peace.

  • 03:25

Alright, cool! We got that massive mountain out of the way.

  • 03:29

This new independent Confederacy realizes it needs to expand on its own.

  • 03:34

They couldn't invade any British or French territories,

  • 03:38

considering the rage that'd bring on the fledgling nation.

  • 03:41

And also, they might be allies.

  • 03:43

There was one European Empire not in too good of shape:

  • 03:47

There was one European Empire not in too good of shape: Spain.

  • 03:48

Step 2: The Carribean not owned by Britain OR France.

  • 03:52

The United States had already been interested in Cuba basically since the U.S had been around.

  • 03:57

Cuba was large, tropical, and prime real estate for profit, with those sugar plantations.

  • 04:03

Every time the U.S offered to buy it from Spain,

  • 04:06

    they were shot down.

  • 04:07

Every time the South rallied to go to war to annex it,

  • 04:10

they were shot down from the North.

  • 04:12

But by the 1860s, Spain was the sick man of Europe.

  • 04:16

    Their empire was practically dead,

  • 04:17

Cuba and Puerto Rico were the last vestiges in the Americas.

  • 04:22

In 1868 of our timeline, Cuba rebelled against Spain, leading to the Ten Years War.

  • 04:28

This rebellion was led by the elite of the Empire and sugar planters.

  • 04:32

And actually, it's pretty plausible the South just aids the rebels against Spain.

  • 04:37

(Or invades and takes the island itself.)

  • 04:40

It wouldn't have been difficult to implement the current Cuban upper class into the Confederacy.

  • 04:45

Britain and France certainly wouldn't be coming to Spain's aid.

  • 04:48

    So, where to next?

  • 04:50

Step 3: Mexico(to become 25 slave states, or not)

  • 04:54

Mexico is complicated, and always has been.

  • 04:59

After the Mexican-American War, there were some calls for the U.S to simply conquer the entire country,

  • 05:04

but this was really never paid attention to,

  • 05:07

nor did many wish for the U.S to become an amalgamation of White Protestants and Mestizo Catholics.

  • 05:14

With this independent South, it's plausible if they took any territory,

  • 05:18

it'd be the less populated northern states.(Baja California, Sonora, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo Leon, and Tamaulipas)

  • 05:21

The U.S military conquered Mexico City in the Mexican-American War,

  • 05:25

so taking the fight all the way to the capital, and annexing the country, isn't out of the realm of possibility.

  • 05:32

What IS, though, is holding it.

  • 05:34

    One thing could happen though...

  • 05:36

Mexico becomes an ally to the South.

  • 05:39

Implemented into the Golden Circle, just in a different way.

  • 05:43

    Quick 1860s Mexico history time.

  • 05:46

In the 1860s, Mexico had instability of its own.

  • 05:49

Under Benito Juarez, Mexico couldn't pay their bills, and Europe was not happy.

  • 05:54

So Britain, France, and Spain decided to invade the country while America was hitting itself.

  • 06:00

The French captured Mexico City and installed an Austrian Prince as Maximilian the First of the Second Mexican Empire.

  • 06:07

    "Yes, that's a mouthful..."

  • 06:09

Basically, he was just a puppet of France.

  • 06:11

The populace was not happy, and once the U.S was done with its own Civil War,

  • 06:15

supported the deposed Juarez, and funded rebels to overthrow the Emperor.

  • 06:20

By 1867, Maximilian had lost all support and was executed.

  • 06:25

If the South won, however, then they would be in a position to actually help out Maximillian,

  • 06:31

which also so happens to gain favor with Britain and France too --

  • 06:34

Assuming they weren't already helping the Confederacy.

  • 06:37

Maxi actually encouraged ex-Confederates to settle in Mexico. (Or any Europeans really)

  • 06:44

He knew that the North didn't support him,

  • 06:46

and had the North lost, the South would be the closest ally that the Emperor had.

  • 06:51

So the South wouldn't have to claim any land or conquer Mexico.

  • 06:55

    The Golden Circle gets bigger.

  • 06:57

Step 4: Central America(nations are small enough to be CS states)

  • 07:01

Central America actually would be pretty easy for the South to invade and conquer.

  • 07:06

Filibustering was an odd little tactic in the 1850s.

  • 07:10

No, it wasn't used to block bills in Congress. (A different type.)

  • 07:12

It was used to create new slave states in Latin America.

  • 07:15

And a few of these expeditions were actually very successful! Even without official U.S support.

  • 07:22

The best example is the tale of William Walker.

  • 07:25

A Californian who decided to take advantage of Nicaragua's civil war to seize power for himself.

  • 07:31

And wouldn't you know it, it worked.

  • 07:33

He became dictator of the country and was even recognized by the President.

  • 07:37

Then Walker went too far and decided to attack one of Vanderbilt's railroads.

  • 07:42

Mr. Sideburns himself personally funded a rebellion against him and he was deposed.

  • 07:47

So if such personal efforts worked in Central America, only to fail because of Vanderbilt,

  • 07:52

it's not implausible that the South could fund actual invasions to annex the region.

  • 07:58

Tigerstar actually suggested that if the South owned Nicaragua,

  • 08:01

then plans for a canal between the Pacific and Atlantic might not have been in Panama, but just a bit north.

  • 08:09

And at the time, Panama was owned by Colombia.

  • 08:11

And the only reason the U.S got the land to build the canal on was because of a very well timed rebellion.

  • 08:18

But if the Confederacy already owned the land, they wouldn't need Panama,

  • 08:21

and could just build the canal elsewhere.

  • 08:24

Step 4: northern South America (and not the entire continent)

  • 08:27

There were some plans to take bits of South America(including Panama according to some maps),

  • 08:30

but even with the Golden Circle controlling so much land, I doubt such efforts would even be plausible.

  • 08:36

Perhaps some docks (Like Ceuta or Melilla today) or a sliver of coastline in Venezuela.

  • 08:40

The Golden Circle was a strange beast of an idea.

  • 08:43

Conceived as a last-ditch effort for a dying institution to regain its old prestige and power.

  • 08:50

Though if it was created, it certainly wouldn't have lasted.

  • 08:53

By the Civil War, slavery was already being rapidly replaced by industrialization.

  • 08:58

Even the South itself would have had to eventually industrialize,

  • 09:01

or end the practice a few decades after the war.

  • 09:05

And when they did so, this alternate Golden Circle that controls a large portion of the Caribbean

  • 09:10

is an entirely different beast (of an idea) than what its founders intended.

  • 09:15

It wouldn't become the South controlling the Caribbean...

  • 09:18

...but the Caribbean, eventually, controlling the South.

  • 09:21

What would be the relationship between the North and the South even after decades?

  • 09:26

Would both sides still hold a grudge against one another,

  • 09:29

or would the two Anglo-American states realize they could work together?

  • 09:33

Would the bitter United States, angered by their loss in the war,

  • 09:36

do anything in their power to fund rebellion and dissent against the Golden Circle's new states?

  • 09:42

    Most likely.

  • 09:43

The idea of controlling large parts of Latin America isn't implausible at all. The U.S always eyed controlling Cuba.

  • 09:50

    (Either directly or through puppets)

  • 09:52

Filibusters did sometimes just take over failed nations in Central America.

  • 09:57

So a country directly aiming to conquer these regions isn't that impossible of an idea.

  • 10:02

But the Golden Circle wasn't the U.S.

  • 10:04

It was one half of the U.S.

  • 10:06

The less industrial, less populated portion.

  • 10:09

It would have collapsed from the inside, or out.

  • 10:13

The nation-state equivalent of throwing a water bottle into a burning inferno.

  • 10:17

But those always make the funnest scenarios!

/meˈstēzō/

One of mixed European and American Indian ancestry.
