  • 00:01

Look what my bestie gave me for my birthday.

  • 00:03

    Oh, I’m ready now?

  • 00:05

    Let’s Go

  • 00:23

Hey guys it’s Marcia and welcome to Really Seriously For Real

  • 00:27

And welcome to the first episode review for

  • 00:29

    Outlanders season 4 return.

  • 00:32

Just a quick thank you to Starz cause they may not have known it, but Outlander returning

  • 00:37

on the 4th is like a late birthday gift so thank you Starz….I forgive you and humbly

  • 00:43

    accept your gift {Laughter}

  • 00:45

And now, let’s switch to our Outlander friends in the new world.

  • 00:52

We get a Cold Open introducing us first to the rough construction of the stone formations

  • 00:58

    in the American wilderness.

  • 01:00

Claire’s voiceover giving a clever walkthrough depicting the symbolism of the circle in our

  • 01:06

    culture.

  • 01:07

Noting the infinite structure and natural repetitiveness.

  • 01:10

    A stone formation a clock… a hangman’s noose.

  • 01:15

A proper segway to Jamie’s friend Hayes.

  • 01:18

You might remember he was the one we saw Jamie talk down from the massive sails in last season’s

  • 01:25

    episode 9, The Doldrums.

  • 01:27

Now he sits awaiting his demise for relieving a man of his life, in self-defense.

  • 01:34

    Well, I guess that’s a circle…

  • 01:36

This is where we also get our first glimpse at Stephen Bonnet as he waits for his turn

  • 01:42

at the gallows, asking to share a final drink of liquor.

  • 01:45

The two men will have two very different fates.

  • 01:49

Where Hayes loses his life and Stephen manages to slither away after a disturbance

  • 01:55

    in the crowd.

  • 01:56

Jaimie, Claire and family regroup at a tavern where they reveal they are unable to bury

  • 02:01

Hayes in a church’s cemetery since he was a criminal-even though the church would look

  • 02:06

the other way for a large bribe, so they instead decide to bury him under the cloak of night

  • 02:12

    in the cemetery anyway.

  • 02:14

Jamie and Ian proceed to dig Hayes final resting place, when poor Ian has a bout of PTSD and

  • 02:23

we’re reminded of his time with Gaelis.

  • 02:26

He painfully tells Jaime how she took advantage of him.

  • 02:30

He was ashamed and hated it, but at the same time, it was pleasing-Jaimie tells young Ian

  • 02:37

that he too was taken advantage of obviously referring to his unfortunate time with

  • 02:42

    Black Jack Randall.

  • 02:44

He empathizes with Ian and tells him his privates don’t have a conscious, you do.

  • 02:50

They go back to the carriage to retrieve Hayes body only to find out they have a stowaway

  • 02:55

by the name of Stephen Bonnet.

  • 02:58

Begging for their assistance in smuggling him out of there to which they agree citing

  • 03:03

    his friendship with Hayes.

  • 03:05

    This had me frustrated though.

  • 03:06

I was yelling at the TV.

  • 03:07

I mean they had been talking about jewels and money while Bonnet was in hiding.

  • 03:14

    Jamie interrogated him a bit.

  • 03:16

Asking him why he was on death row.

  • 03:18

But right there is where everything should’ve ended cause Bonnet confessed he was a thief.

  • 03:23

You’re traveling with priceless jewels and the guy is a thief.

  • 03:27

Jewels, thief, jewels thief-shall I go on?

  • 03:30

    Anywho.

  • 03:31

Jamie and Claire take Bonnet, disguising him as a body awaiting burial and when they reach

  • 03:36

a checkpoint with English officers, they poke at the body with a bayonet…just to make

  • 03:41

    sure.

  • 03:42

Talk about taking a chance…cause there’s a lot of places they could’ve poked.

  • 03:46

But not even a flinch, so they’re allowed to proceed.

  • 03:49

Once far enough away Claire tends to Bonnet’s leg which was nicked slightly though lucky

  • 03:55

for him the venison bore the brunt of the sword.

  • 03:58

    ----ahhhh, Stephen.

  • 03:59

It’s clear even then that he’s in the business of using anything as long as he reaps

  • 04:05

    the reward.

  • 04:06

    I’m looking at you venison

  • 04:08

    Moving on

  • 04:09

Bonnet takes note of Claire’s rings.

  • 04:12

She offers the info of her previous marriage.

  • 04:15

Bonnet studies her as she tends to him.

  • 04:17

He shares his fear of drowning with her.

  • 04:19

A recurring dream he’s had for many years.

  • 04:23

Claire reciprocates with her story of almost drowning.

  • 04:25

It’s easy to see how disarming that could be.

  • 04:28

They send him on his way with hopes of good luck and he humbly thanks them for their help

  • 04:33

and cautions them to be weary in the woods as you’ll find many thieves and outlaws.

  • 04:38

    You mean YOU right Bonnet?

  • 04:42

Anyone else wanted to toss that leg of venison at him?

  • 04:45

Claire and Jamie decide it’s best to camp in the woods so as to not arouse the suspicions

  • 04:51

of the English with an early return to the checkpoint.

  • 04:54

Cut to some sexy, sexy time in the Carolina woods.

  • 04:58

    Just you me and the trees. {Laughter}

  • 05:01

[point to the camera} Ya’ll so bad.—alright…one more look

  • 05:05

The next morning, Claire romantically explains the American dream as they overlook the majestic

  • 05:11

mountains set before them, citing how many people would make the journey in hopes of

  • 05:16

    a better life.

  • 05:18

It was Jaimie’s realistic response that had the most gravitas.

  • 05:24

    “What about those already here?

  • 05:26

    the natives?”

  • 05:28

I originally thought it was so weird that Claire would romanticize the American dream

  • 05:33

when she was from the future and saw the perils of war and segregation of all types, yet Jamie’s

  • 05:40

initial thought would be instead to the natives.

  • 05:43

The causalities of progress, so it was a nice and important touch to show that it wasn’t

  • 05:50

a dream to all but instead could be a nightmare.

  • 05:54

One that Claire admitted was not unlike what the English did to the Highlanders.

  • 05:58

    There goes that circle again.

  • 06:00

The Frasers attend a dinner that evening in hopes of finding someone to purchase their

  • 06:05

    ruby.

  • 06:06

    This way they can have enough money to get their life started. {Laughter}

  • 06:11

Get their life started-{Laughter} ok They’re like 50.

  • 06:14

I guess the 1700s are not unlike 2000 and now-{Laughter}Times are hard for a lot of people.

  • 06:21

Forget he American dream….we call that bills, taxes and debt.

  • 06:25

    Moving on

  • 06:27

So Claire shows off her goods --and get your

  • 06:29

mind out the gutter I meant her ruby necklace {laughter} --and finds a buyer and Jaime receives an

  • 06:34

offer from the Governor after some talk and acknowledgement that he’s the nephew of

  • 06:38

    Jocasta Cameron.

  • 06:40

The governor suggests to relax some provisions required for a land grant if Jaimie would

  • 06:47

settle there and encourage other immigrants to settle on that land.

  • 06:51

He only needs to pledge allegiance to the king.

  • 06:54

Well, later that night Claire expressed to Jaimie that she would actually find the idea

  • 07:00

pleasing, except for the little fact that several years from then, a major war will break out

  • 07:06

and they will be on the losing side….AGAIN.

  • 07:10

And by Jaimie pledging loyalty to the king, they would be branded loyalists and all their

  • 07:17

land would be taken away…oh boy.

  • 07:19

So, yeah, they decide it’s a great idea and a risk worth taking.

  • 07:24

    Cut to the next day.

  • 07:26

we meet our four-legged friend, Rollo which Ian won after gambling with dice.

  • 07:33

I love how Claire questions whether it’s a dog or wolf…I would go further and ask

  • 07:39

if it were a dire wolf??

  • 07:41

    oh Sorry, wrong show.

  • 07:43

I love how much they reference Jenny in these scenes.

  • 07:47

Your mother’s not gonna like this or your mother will have my head, etc.

  • 07:50

She’s such a great character and you know she’ll turn Jamie over her knee if she had

  • 07:57

the chance should her son go the illegal path. Once inside, Claire and Jaime share that they'll

  • 08:04

be sticking a flag in the North Carolina territory and calling this home.

  • 08:10

Ian is encouraged to go on back to Lallybroch while Fergus and Marseille unveil the news

  • 08:16

that they are with child so they too will stay in North Carolina, though they’ll wait

  • 08:21

in the current town that they're in and find the Frasier’s later.

  • 08:25

    So that leaves Leslie.

  • 08:27

He decides to stay as well, though as a continued protection in this unknown new world.

  • 08:34

No truer a statement would be said.

  • 08:37

But, I’m getting ahead of myself.

  • 08:39

Fergus and Marseille stay behind as the rest board a riverboat headed towards the direction

  • 08:44

    of Aunt Jocasta.

  • 08:45

Claire sternly points out to the river captain however that this elderly slave shouldn’t

  • 08:50

be on his feet so long.

  • 08:52

Which in reply he lets Claire know that this man actually receives a fair wage and is actually free

  • 09:00

after he saved the life of his captain during a fire.

  • 09:03

His heroism helped the captain make the decision to petition his freedom easily.

  • 09:09

    A nice touch.

  • 09:12

Later during a riverboat steering lesson, Jamie asks Claire for a moment and presents

  • 09:18

    her with a gift.

  • 09:19

A med kit, complete with microscope.

  • 09:21

I mean that was such an emotional moment and an emotional and thoughtful gift complete

  • 09:29

with the sentiment that he would love to be able to shower her with jewels but states

  • 09:34

the most he’s done is to offer her the wedding band and his mother’s pearls to which Claire

  • 09:40

replies—You’ve already given me so much.

  • 09:44

    Brianna for one.

  • 09:45

    A touching reminder.

  • 09:47

Jamie says, 24 years ago I asked you to marry me Sassenach, I hope I haven’t given you

  • 09:53

    cause to regret it.

  • 09:56

Not for a single day Claire replies.

  • 09:59

ok Let’s all let out a big ole hearty AWWWWWWW…like I did when while I was watching and now let

  • 10:07

me douse the flames and cut to Claire saying, “I’m not sure if we belong together anymore.”

  • 10:12

On the cliffs before Ian was taken.

  • 10:15

watch the video, I would be remiss if I didn’t bring it up.

  • 10:19

listen Don’t worry guys, I know those were tense and extreme circumstances back then ,

  • 10:24

hardly fair to bring it up---but I’m watching…

  • 10:27

Alright this is getting to be a long one, but we’re almost done, we're almost done

  • 10:31

Up to this point, we saw the loss of a friend, but growth of family and bond.

  • 10:37

    Hope, Discovery and peace.

  • 10:39

But this is a circle, so how would you see the loop closed?

  • 10:45

The Frasers, Ian, Leslie, all asleep in their cabin.

  • 10:49

    Calm and seemingly content.

  • 10:52

So were we as the viewer.

  • 10:54

Lulled into a sense of calm that the episode might end on a high note.

  • 11:00

Up to this point it had been an hour already.

  • 11:02

They had been speaking about hope for so long, why not an uplifting end….. and then the

  • 11:10

    music.

  • 11:11

That out of place and time piano music that snapped me awake and shook me.

  • 11:18

I thought I was watching a bad copy of the show for a second because I was so confused.

  • 11:23

A minute ago, I was in bliss and now I was on edge….do you get it?

  • 11:29

    Just like the Frasier’s.

  • 11:31

They were first jolted awake by Rollo lunging at an intruder who was none other than that

  • 11:39

conniving Stephen Bonnet and his band of evil cohorts.

  • 11:45

Separating our friends in a classic divide and conquer all the while the melodic, soulful

  • 11:51

tone of Ray Charles 1976 rendition of America the Beautiful played over the turmoil only

  • 12:00

further enhanced by their visual acting as nary a sound is heard over the music.

  • 12:07

An excellent artistic choice that wasn’t necessarily the biggest hit with some, but

  • 12:13

then I invite you to rewatch the episode again and weigh the contrast of the beginning to

  • 12:18

    the end scene.

  • 12:20

It was a tough scene to watch.

  • 12:21

    That was the point.

  • 12:24

We lost Leslie to Bonnets blade after Leslie successfully aided Claire.

  • 12:30

Unfortunately Bonnet forced Claire to give up her rings, not before she tried to swallow

  • 12:34

    them.

  • 12:36

Bonnet managed to dislodge one…Jamie’s ring.

  • 12:40

Yes, yes Jamie’s ring…calm down I know there were a lot of people mad he took THAT ring

  • 12:47

instead of Frank's ring like he did in the book.

  • 12:50

But you gotta remember it’s the show, not the books and they have to whittle a whole

  • 12:57

bunch of content down to a manageable amount while still keeping to the integrity of the

  • 13:02

    books.

  • 13:03

And that also means they may take some artistic liberties.

  • 13:07

    Look, I’m good.

  • 13:08

I was satisfied with the episode.

  • 13:10

A nice way to ease us into the new season and a powerful message on a controversial

  • 13:17

    topic.

  • 13:18

Oh my God, that was a long one.

  • 13:21

So if you made it to the end, thank you.

  • 13:24

This is the point where I ask the question of the day:
