  • 00:09

Welcome to the magnificent the Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Família, often simply called

  • 00:17

    the Sagrada Familia.

  • 00:20

Many say that if you only have time to visit one site in Barcelona, the Sagrada Familia

  • 00:26

    should be it.

  • 00:27

When looking at the church, I think you can understand why.

  • 00:33

Even though the church is still under construction, it has become a symbol for Barcelona and the

  • 00:38

    Catalonian region.

  • 00:42

The initiative to build a new grand church came from the bookseller and chairman of the

  • 00:47

Holy Brotherhood, José Maria Bocabella, in the mid 19th century.

  • 00:52

The church would be devoted to the child Jesus, the Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph, which is

  • 01:00

why the church is named "Sagrada Familia" -- "The Holy Family".

  • 01:06

The planning of the church began when the architect Francisco de Paula del Villar offered

  • 01:13

    to design the whole structure.

  • 01:15

He planned a more typical gothic church, but was later forced to resign from his job due

  • 01:21

to fundamental disagreements with the founder Bocabella.

  • 01:26

A few months after del Villars resignation, a young architect by the name of Antonio Gaudi

  • 01:33

took over the work in 1883.

  • 01:35

What Gaudi didn't know at the time was that his new project would take up almost all his

  • 01:43

time and effort for the rest of his life.

  • 01:48

Once the construction phase started, he soon became obsessed with the project and set up

  • 01:53

an office on site which became his permanent residence.

  • 01:59

His plan was to build facades which would represent the birth, death, and resurrection

  • 02:05

    of Christ.

  • 02:07

The church would have a total of eighteen towers symbolizing the twelve Apostles, the

  • 02:14

four Evangelists, and the Virgin Mary and Christ.

  • 02:19

The one representing Christ would be the tallest and would stand 170 meters high, crowned by

  • 02:25

    a large cross.

  • 02:27

The tower would be one meter less than the Montjuïc, a hill in Barcelona, as Gaudi said

  • 02:35

he didn't want to suppress the work of God.

  • 02:40

Gaudi devoted his last 15 years fully to the Sagrada Familia, until he by accident was

  • 02:47

hit a tram which led to his death, a few days later in 1926, 74 years old.

  • 02:56

What made Gaudi's architectural style so exciting was his sense for shapes.

  • 03:02

Instead of designing buildings with straight lines, Gaudi worked much with loose vivid

  • 03:08

    design.

  • 03:10

The Casa Mila and the eastern façade of Sagrada Famila are perfect examples of this, which

  • 03:16

    you will see later.

  • 03:18

Arguably, no other architect in history has ever had such an absolute influence on a city

  • 03:26

as Antoni Gaudi has had on Barcelona.

  • 03:30

There are great works of his Modernist style all over the city but the greatest of all

  • 03:36

his works is of course what you have in front of you right now.

  • 03:40

After Gaudi's death, work continued as planned.

  • 03:46

However, with the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in 1936, work came to a halt and

  • 03:54

parts of Gaudi's models and plans were destroyed.

  • 04:00

The present design is based on reconstructed versions of the lost plans as well as on modern

  • 04:07

    adaptations.

  • 04:09

Today, computer technology is being used to pre-shape the stones off site, rather than

  • 04:17

shape them on site by hand.

  • 04:20

This has significantly affected the pace of the construction and it's now scheduled to

  • 04:25

    be completed around 2020-2030.

  • 04:31

Many believe the deadline is set to June 10th 2026, in honor of the 100th anniversary of

  • 04:40

    Gaudi's tragic death.

  • 04:43

On the subject of the extremely long construction period, Gaudi is said to have remarked "My

  • 04:49

client is not in a hurry."

  • 04:51

Now, let's talk some about the church itself.

  • 04:57

If there is something the church is full of, except enchanting beauty, its symbolism.

  • 05:04

Themes throughout the detailed decoration include words from the Christian liturgy.

  • 05:10

For example, the towers are decorated with words such as "Hosanna", "Excelsis" and "Sanctus",

  • 05:19

but the most detailed parts of the church are the magnificent facades.

  • 05:25

When completed, the Church will have three grand façades: the Passion façade to the

  • 05:31

West, the Nativity façade to the East and the Glory façade to the South.

  • 05:38

The latter is the one still under construction.

  • 05:42

The one you are standing in front right now, the Passion façade, also known as the Façade

  • 05:50

of the Suffering Way, is most known for its unorthodox sculptures.

  • 05:57

The façade is actually designed by Gaudi during the time he suffered from a serious

  • 06:02

    illness.

  • 06:03

The work was carried out later in 1989 by the sculptor Josep Subirachs, based on Gaudi's

  • 06:11

    drawings.

  • 06:12

As you can see, the sculptor' style is, in contrast with Gaudi's, very much based around

  • 06:19

    sharp edges.

  • 06:23

The façade is based around telling the story of the suffering of Christ, showing different

  • 06:28

stages of the suffering, with the help of sculptures, in an "S-shaped" pattern.

  • 06:35

Starting on the first level, to the very far left of the entrance, you can see statues

  • 06:40

    depicting the last supper.

  • 06:43

The next step in the "S-shaped" story telling is to the left of the entrance, where you

  • 06:49

can see how Judas the betrayer is kissing Jesus.

  • 06:55

Behind them you can see a magic square, filled with different numbers.

  • 07:00

Before I tell you the square's secret, I want to give you a chance to find it out yourself.

  • 07:06

Can you solve the riddle of the magic square?

  • 07:11

On the pillar in between the entrances you can find Jesus tied and tormented.

  • 07:17

To the right you can see Peter's denial and to the far right Jesus trial.

  • 07:25

Above the trial you can see the three Marys and above the entrance, Golgotha; the place

  • 07:32

    where Jesus was crucified.

  • 07:35

To the left you can see a mounted solider, which depicts Longino -- the man who the legend

  • 07:42

has it pierced Jesus side with a spear.

  • 07:48

Above him you can see soldiers gambling for Jesus clothes, and to the right of them, the

  • 07:54

    crucifixion.

  • 07:57

The last sculptures to the far right shows the entombment of Christ.

  • 08:04

One little detail many people don't notice can be found far above the entrance, at the

  • 08:10

    archway between the towers.

  • 08:12

If you look closely to towards the right side, you can see a golden statue of the risen Christ.

  • 08:20

If you take a look at the main doors, you will see that they are filled with words from

  • 08:25

the Bible in various languages, including Catalan.

  • 08:28

Now I'm going to tell you about all details found on the façade on the opposite side

  • 08:29

of the church, the eastern one known as the Nativity Façade.

  • 08:31

Due to this, I highly advise you to pause the guide and start it again when you are

  • 08:33

standing in front of the eastern façade.

  • 08:35

It will otherwise be hard to remember it all, as the eastern façade is just as stacked

  • 08:38

with symbolism as the Passion façade!

  • 08:39

.... You should now be standing of the magnificent

  • 08:40

    Nativity Façade.

  • 08:41

This façade was built before work was interrupted by the civil war and bears the most direct

  • 08:44

Gaudi influence, as I mentioned earlier.

  • 08:49

It consists of four bell towers and three large portals.

  • 08:54

From left to right you have the Portal of Hope, the Portal of Charity and the Portal

  • 08:59

    of Faith.

  • 09:01

If you look at the top of the portals, you can see that they symbolize grottos.

  • 09:07

In fact, throughout the whole Nativity Façade, there is a clear theme of nature, as many

  • 09:14

of the sculptures symbolize vegetation, people and birds.

  • 09:19

This is a celebration to the ever changing nature and to the creators of all forms of

  • 09:27

    life.

  • 09:28

The leftmost portal, known as the Portal of Hope, is covered in flora and fauna from the

  • 09:36

    Nile.

  • 09:37

The portal shows the flight of the Holy Family into Egypt and to the right you see the Herod

  • 09:44

    murdering innocent children.

  • 09:45

The portal also displays some hope, in form of Joseph standing together with his son above

  • 09:54

    the doorway.

  • 09:56

In the top of the portal you can also see the marriage between Joseph and Mary.

  • 10:03

The rightmost Portal is known as the Portal of Faith.

  • 10:06

The sculptures' surrounding the portal depicts the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the Holy Family

  • 10:15

in their house at Nazareth and the presentation of the baby Jesus in the temple.

  • 10:20

In the very top you can see the Immaculate Conception, a Roman Catholic Dogma which says

  • 10:28

that Virgin Mary is without any original sin.

  • 10:35

Now finally let's talk some about the large center portal, the Portal of Charity.

  • 10:42

In the middle of this portal you'll find two doors, supported by a beautiful pillar.

  • 10:50

On the lower part of the pillar, you can see a snake sinking its teeth into an apple, the

  • 10:57

symbol of original sin, which is the reason Jesus came to earth.

  • 11:02

On the left side of the doors you can see the Three Kings, bringing their gifts to the

  • 11:07

newborn Jesus, and on the other side the Three Shepherds.

  • 11:14

Above the doors you can see sculptures representing the birth of Christ and at the top you can

  • 11:20

see how Jesus crowns the Virgin Mary Queen of Heaven.

  • 11:26

Above that, closer to the very top, you see the letters "JHS" - an anagram for Christ's

  • 11:34

    name.

  • 11:37

The Portal of Charity is crowned with a large tree of life.

  • 11:42

On the pinnacle of the tree stands a large red "T"; the last letter of the Hebrew alphabet

  • 11:49

which reads "tau", the initial of the name of God.

  • 11:54

On top of the T is a smaller X, which represents Christ.

  • 12:00

At the very top you can also see a white dove, which represents the Holy Spirit.

  • 12:06

Thus, the three persons of the Holy Trinity are represented at the top of the tree, symbolizing

  • 12:14

    the creators of life.

  • 12:19

Between the tree portals you can see two massive pillars.

  • 12:23

If you look at the bottom of the pillars you will see that they are resting on turtles.

  • 12:30

Turtles have long been seen as a divine animal with connections to the heavens and the cosmos,

  • 12:37

    known for their longevity.

  • 12:39

Half way up, the columns bear the inscriptions 'Joseph' and 'Mary'.

  • 12:48

The columns are crowned with palms to symbolize triumph and the coming of a new light.

  • 12:54

In the old days, palm symbolized the martyr and his or her triumph over death.

  • 13:03

As you now know, the whole church is absolutely full of symbolism.

  • 13:09

Giving all the details about all the symbols covering the church would leave me talking

  • 13:14

for hours, so with this I'm going to let you do some exploring and discover the rest of

  • 13:20

    the symbolism yourself.

  • 13:22

I'm just going to explain one final thing symbolism.

  • 13:26

Remember the Magic Square you could see on the Passion façade, behind Judas?

  • 13:31

In case you haven't solved the riddle, the answer is that all the numbers added up to

  • 13:36

33; the age Jesus was when he died.

  • 13:43

Today, even though it's unfinished, the church has become a top tourist attraction, not only

  • 13:50

in Barcelona, but in whole Spain.

  • 13:54

The visitors are an important source of income as the project is not supported by any government

  • 13:59

    or official church sources.

  • 14:03

An estimate of more than two million people visits the site each year.
