  • 01:21

acne that is caused by wearing a face mask.

  • 01:24

Since the beginning of time primarily health care workers have been experiencing mask induced outbreaks and skin irritations.

  • 01:31

But now masks are becoming a part of everyday life for the rest of us as well.

  • 01:36

Everyone is experiencing the same effects.

  • 01:39

So exactly is maskne or masky as some people lovingly refer to it,

  • 01:44

    and what causes it?

  • 01:46

As the name suggests maskne is an acne caused by wearing face coverings.

  • 01:52

Usually it is caused by the over wearing of masks that have not been cleaned all that often or

  • 01:59

by wearing friction aka the rubbing and blockages of the skin by outside forces.

  • 02:05

    This is called acne mechanica.

  • 02:07

Masks can often trap humidity, dirt, oil, and sweat inside.

  • 02:11

Your mask then creates friction and irritation on our skin surface creating micro tears allowing easier entry

  • 02:19

for bacteria and dirt to enter the skin leading to

  • 02:22

inflammation which activates the skin acne process.

  • 02:25

This is why it's super important to keep your mask clean.

  • 02:28

Forms of acne such as whiteheads, blackheads, and cysts tend to form where the skin mask sits on your face.

  • 02:35

The bridge of the nose, the chin, and the cheeks seem to be the most affected areas.

  • 02:40

This is not the first time this concern has reached the surface though.

  • 03:14

Wash your face before and after wearing a mask.

  • 03:17

Think of your face kind of like your hands in some regard.

  • 03:20

Washing your face before putting on your mask eliminates any bacteria that lingers on the surface of your skin,

  • 03:27

but be careful remember to use a gentle cleanser

  • 03:30

and maybe scale back if you're experiencing over dryness or irritation from over washing.

  • 03:36

Also if you're using a reusable fabric face covering wash your fabric mask

  • 03:42

    between each use.

  • 03:43

If you're wearing a fabric face mask you should be washing it after every time you wear it.

  • 03:49

Sweat, dirt, germs, or oil you name it are being trapped within the mask.

  • 03:54

It's actually counterintuitive to your health to not properly clean your mask after each use.

  • 03:59

This can further exacerbate maskne and run the risk of contracting COVID-19.

  • 04:04

Most cloth mask are washing machine safe.

  • 04:28

    the perfect acne breeding ground.

  • 04:30

Instead of caking and baking your face to death,

  • 04:33

opt for a tinted moisturizer or tinted sunscreen for breakout friendly SPF protection.

  • 04:40

    Exfoliate and moisturize.

  • 04:41

Try to incorporate a topical chemical exfoliant into your skin care routine.

  • 04:47

Chemical exfoliants dissolve dead skin cells on the skin’s surface.

  • 04:51

These dead skin cells are pore clogging triggers.

  • 04:55

Chemical exfoliants are often found in face toners.

  • 04:58

During your next Target store binge or Amazon shopping spree,

  • 05:02

pick up a toner containing the ingredient beta hydroxy acid and BHA commonly known as salicylic acid.

  • 05:09

Try also to select a face toner that does not contain alcohol.

  • 05:13

Alcohol will counteract the effects of eliminating dead skin cells.

  • 05:18

It'll just dry it out and irritate your skin.

  • 05:20

Facial toners should be applied after washing your face and before moisturizing using a cotton pad.

  • 05:27

What? But wait. Dr. Wagner, won't moisturizer break me out?

  • 05:32

A question I get often but no. Absolutely not.

  • 05:35

When your skin lacks moisture it becomes dry and begins to shed dead cells.

  • 05:40

To counteract the dryness your face produces a natural oil called sebum.

  • 05:45

The excess sebum and dead skin buildup under the skin and mask causing acne.

  • 05:51

After washing your face and using toner you need to replenish the skin’s moisture before it starts to produce sebum.

  • 05:58

Opt for a noncomedogenic and oil-free moisturizer.

  • 06:02

If you're someone who has acne prone skin and hypothetically speaking allergic to moisturizer because you think you will break out,

  • 06:09

opt for a gel based moisturizer.

  • 06:12

Gel-based moisturizers are lightweight, water based, and replenish the skin’s moisture without a greasy feel left behind.

  • 06:20

For healthcare workers or those who experience extra dryness and eczema even,

  • 06:25

applying an over-the-counter cortisone cream on a

  • 06:28

short-term basis helps alleviate skin irritation

  • 06:31

    and calm down the inflammation.

  • 06:33

    What else helps combat maskne?

  • 06:35

    Create a barrier.

  • 06:36

When dealing with stubborn maskne it is key to create a barrier between your face covering and skin.

  • 06:43

  • 06:47

but will prevent bacteria from spreading under your mask.

  • 06:51

    Silicone tape or acne patches.

  • 06:53

    Assess your face mask material.

  • 07:07

If you're someone with acne prone skin and in a never-ending maskne cycle,

  • 07:12

consider what type of material your face mask is made out of. To reduce and prevent acne caused by the mask,

  • 07:19

you want a mask material that creates as little friction as possible on your skin.

  • 07:24

Silk is probably the most gentle and causes the least amount of friction.

  • 07:28

Remember less friction equals less dead skin cell build-up and fewer outbreaks.

  • 07:34

Zinc oxide mask. A mask with zinc oxide embedded in the fabric may be helpful as well.

  • 07:41
