Is Turmeric Good For Your Prostate?

An Enlarged Prostate As men age, the prostate, a walnut-sized gland,

located between the bladder and the penis, enlarges.

This results in the urethra being blocked, making it hard to empty the bladder completely.

By the age of 50, 50% of men experience urinary problems, such as frequent urination, nighttime

waking, and urinary urgency.

These symptoms can often be uncomfortable, painful, and embarrassing for men.

Several studies have reviewed the anti-inflammatory effect of turmeric, with research suggesting

it can reduce prostate swelling.

A 2015 animal study investigated whether curcumin may repress the development of BPH in male

Wistar rats.

Compared to the finasteride group, the curcumin group showed a similarly protective effect

on BPH and prostate volume.

The results suggest that curcumin inhibited the development of BPH and might be a useful

herbal treatment or food for BPH.

Further research has also shed light on how turmeric can improve urinary symptoms associated

with BPH.

A pilot study published in Italy’s Panminerva Medica in 2012 followed 33 patients with BPH,

given curcumin supplements for six months.

Researchers found these men had fewer symptoms, improved urine stream and better quality of

life than those in the control group

Prostatitis

Prostatitis is the inflammation of the prostate gland.

It can affect men of all ages but is the most common urinary tract problem for men under

the age of 50.

In most cases, men with a prostate infection experience urinary urgency, frequency, and

pain, all of which significantly impact quality of life.

Other symptoms include burning, pain during urination, groin and lower back

pain, and repeated urinary tract infections.

Increasing studies support the medicinal benefits of turmeric as a powerful anti-inflammatory.

A 2017 clinical trial found that the curcumin found in turmeric effectively managed Chronic

Prostatitis.

As a result, turmeric may have therapeutic effects on prostatitis by reducing inflammation

of the prostate gland.

Since prostatitis is, by its very nature, an inflammatory condition, turmeric is a valuable

herb to use against it.

Prostate Cancer

Researchers have found turmeric and its extract, curcumin, may help prevent, and even treat

prostate cancer.

The warm, yellow spice contains anti cancerous properties that may stop the spread and growth

of prostate cancer cells.

Prostate cancer is one of the most concerning diseases among men.

In the United States, over 170,000 new cases of prostate cancer are diagnosed each year.

Several studies have looked at how turmeric interacts with cancer.

It has been found that the use of turmeric and curcumin supplements may effectively help

to reduce the risk of several cancer types.

A study in the AAPS Journal found that curcumin is able to reduce the angiogenesis effects

within tumor growth.

Angiogenesis is a term used to describe the development of new blood vessels within the

tumors that have grown in the patient’s body.

Additionally, the same study describes that curcumin might be potentially effective at

destroying cells that are considered cancerous.

Turmeric is not just a spice that adds color and an earthy taste to some dishes but may

also be a critical part of keeping the prostate healthy among men.

The spice has natural anti-inflammatory properties that could help to shrink an enlarged prostate

and naturally treat prostatitis.
