Hi, so you are watching this video because you want to know how to strengthen diaphragm.

  • 00:06

    Everybody talks about the diaphragm.

  • 00:10

It seems like it's the holy grail of singing.

  • 00:13

So, in this video, I am going to share 3 secrets about the diaphragm and you may be actually

  • 00:20

very surprised what I am going to tell you about strengthening the diaphragm.

  • 00:26

    So keep on watching.

  • 00:36

Hi, my name is Katarina and I am the creator of How 2 Improve Singing and also the founder

  • 00:43

    of Breathing Academy for Singers.

  • 00:46

So let’s talk about the diaphragm.

  • 00:49

The diaphragm is the biggest breathing muscle.

  • 00:51

It’s a dome shaped muscle and it separates the chest cavity from the abdominal cavity.

  • 01:00

Everyone talks about the diaphragm but it is not the holy grail of singing.

  • 01:06

Let me tell you 3 less known facts about the diaphragm that you probably don't know.

  • 01:15

Secret #1 You cannot sing from the diaphragm.

  • 01:19

The diaphragm is active on inhalation when we breathe in.

  • 01:25

The diaphragm moves down and flattens.

  • 01:29

Contrary to the popular belief, the diaphragm is not active when we exhale.

  • 01:35

Yes, it's not active when we sing or breathe out.

  • 01:41

The diaphragm returns and relaxes to its dome shaped position during exhalation and it is

  • 01:47

very difficult to control a muscle in the state of relaxation.

  • 01:53

Secret #2 You cannot touch your diaphragm.

  • 01:57

You cannot touch, feel or directly contract your diaphragm.

  • 02:03

It’s not like a biceps that you can strengthen by lifting weights.

  • 02:10

Yes, you can pause breathing, you can slow it down, you can speed it up but by manipulating

  • 02:18

your breathing you are not affecting only the diaphragm, you are affecting the whole

  • 02:23

    system.

  • 02:24

The diaphragm is the biggest breathing muscle but it's not the only part that participates

  • 02:31

    in breathing and singing.

  • 02:34

Our instrument is our whole body.

  • 02:37

It's not just one part of your body.

  • 02:40

Yes, it's true that the basic sound is created in your larynx, your voice box but if we isolated

  • 02:49

this basic sound, this fundamental frequency from the rest of the body, from the rest of

  • 02:55

your instrument, it would not sound pretty.

  • 03:00

Secret #3 Finally, and I am sorry to disappoint you,

  • 03:03

    you cannot strengthen your diaphragm.

  • 03:06

Some people may suggest that the diaphragm can be strengthened by sit-up exercises.

  • 03:13

The muscles targeted by this exercise are the abdominal muscles, more specifically

  • 03:21

the rectus abdominis muscle (or better known as your six-pack).

  • 03:27

Some people may suggest that breathing exercises will strengthen your diaphragm.

  • 03:33

But the diaphragm is strong enough for speaking and singing, unless you suffer from an illness,

  • 03:42

    respiratory or muscle illness.

  • 03:46

Maybe some people suggest that a strong diaphragm provides strong support for singing.

  • 03:53

But do not confuse the concept of “strong support” with a strong diaphragm.

  • 04:00

So called support in singing is a coordination of muscle action in your body and it involves

  • 04:11

many other muscle groups, not just the diaphragm.

  • 04:15

So the goal of a singer is not really to strengthen the diaphragm but to learn to coordinate different

  • 04:23

muscle groups during breathing and singing to achieve an efficient movement.

  • 04:30

So instead of looking for answers to the question how to strengthen diaphragm for singing, ask

  • 04:38

    the right questions.

  • 04:39

For example, how to coordinate muscle action so that you can produce sounds with ease or

  • 04:46

how to breathe efficiently for singing.

  • 04:51

Also invest some time and learn about the design of your vocal instrument – about

  • 04:57

    your whole body.

  • 04:59

And believe me it will not be a waste of time.

  • 05:03

This knowledge will help you recognize myths about singing and it will allow you to cooperate

  • 05:11

with the instrument that you already have in a very natural way.

  • 05:16

    And that's it for today.
