  • 00:00

What about all of the people who claimed to have died and gone to heaven?

  • 00:03

    What are near death experiences?

  • 00:06

It's time to UNLEARN the lies.

  • 00:09

    UNLEARN

  • 00:12

    Hey, welcome to UNLEARN.

  • 00:15

My name is Lex, and I'd like to invite you to join us each week as we UNLEARN the lies

  • 00:19

and dig deeper into the truth of God's Word.

  • 00:21

    Now, let's get started.

  • 00:22

There have been a number of books and movies based on claims that people have gone to heaven

  • 00:27

then returned to tell about it.

  • 00:29

It seems to be quite a popular subject, and many people have been convinced that these

  • 00:33

stories are true, but do those stories line up with what the Bible says?

  • 00:37

The Bible should always be our authority on these things, and we must let it to guide

  • 00:42

    us to the truth.

  • 00:43

The Bible gives us some great examples and descriptions of heaven through visions that

  • 00:47

certain prophets recorded in the Scriptures.

  • 00:49

These visions of heaven can serve as a guideline for helping us determine if a particular experience

  • 00:55

    was real or not.

  • 00:56

When we examine the stories of near death experiences, many of the authors seem to focus

  • 01:00

on how they felt, who they saw, and how important they are for having seen such things.

  • 01:05

They often point out things they came to understand through their experience, which they could

  • 01:09

not have learned through Scripture alone.

  • 01:11

These stories end up being very self-centered and shallow in contrast with the Biblical

  • 01:16

    visions of heaven.

  • 01:17

Three Biblical authors recorded visions of heaven (Isaiah, Ezekiel, and John), but none

  • 01:22

of them are described as having near death experiences.

  • 01:25

As we look at the Biblical visions of heaven, notice that they focus completely on the majesty

  • 01:30

of God, and say nothing about themselves except that they are unworthy to be in God’s presence.

  • 01:35

Isaiah gives us a perfect example of this.

  • 01:38

“…I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, and the train of His robe

  • 01:42

    filled the temple.

  • 01:43

Above it stood seraphim; each one had six wings: with two he covered his face, with

  • 01:48

two he covered his feet, and with two he flew.

  • 01:51

And one cried to another and said: "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; The whole

  • 01:56

earth is full of His glory!"

  • 01:58

And the posts of the door were shaken by the voice of him who cried out, and the house

  • 02:01

    was filled with smoke.

  • 02:03

So I said: ‘Woe is me, for I am undone!

  • 02:06

Because I am a man of unclean lips, And I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean

  • 02:11

lips; For my eyes have seen the King, The Lord of hosts.’"

  • 02:15

    - Isaiah 6:1-5

  • 02:16

Notice that Isaiah didn’t tell us about getting to speak with departed family members,

  • 02:19

or how happy and peaceful he felt.

  • 02:22

When he saw the vision of heaven, he said, “Woe is me, for I am undone…

  • 02:26

    I am a man of unclean lips…”

  • 02:28

He was not comforted by his vision of heaven, nor was he reassured of his goodness and accomplishments.

  • 02:35

He was made acutely aware of his own sinfulness and he understood how unworthy he really was.

  • 02:41

Notice also that everything in his vision points to the glory, holiness, and majesty

  • 02:45

    of the Almighty God.

  • 02:46

When standing in the presence of God, Isaiah was not concerned with talking to dead relatives

  • 02:51

or sight seeing, because he was completely captivated by the Holy One on the throne.

  • 02:57

When we compare this with the stories of people who claim to have died and gone to heaven,

  • 03:01

we find that they couldn’t be more different.

  • 03:04

If those people truly went to heaven, they would not be preoccupied with familiar faces

  • 03:08

and strange conversations, because their full and undivided attention would have been focused

  • 03:13

    on God Almighty.

  • 03:15

Paul also mentions a man who had a vision of heaven, but explains that he "heard inexpressible

  • 03:20

words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter" However, those who claim they went

  • 03:25

to heaven have no problem talking about everything they saw and heard, often claiming they were

  • 03:30

sent back to share what they experienced.

  • 03:33

This testimony also contrasts the words of Yeshua who said,

  • 03:36

"If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded though one

  • 03:39

    rise from the dead."

  • 03:41

    - Luke 16:31

  • 03:42

    Did God change His mind?

  • 03:43

Did He decide to start sending people back to tell us how beautiful heaven is, so that

  • 03:47

we will want to go there?

  • 03:49

    This simply doesn’t make sense.

  • 03:51

God has given us His Word, and if we will not listen to Moses and the prophets, then

  • 03:55

why would He send someone back to write a New York Times bestseller about heaven?

  • 03:59

If we believe the Bible, then we cannot believe the testimony of someone who claims they went

  • 04:03

to heaven, because the Bible plainly says,

  • 04:06

"No one has ascended to heaven but He who came down from heaven, that is, the Son of

  • 04:10

    Man who is in heaven."

  • 04:11

    - John 3:13

  • 04:12

We shouldn’t listen to fanciful tales from people who claim to have gone to heaven, because

  • 04:16

they are not compatible with the Word of God.

  • 04:18

I’m not saying they are all liars.

  • 04:20

Some people sincerely believe they saw heaven, but many of these experiences are caused by

  • 04:25

extreme trauma leading to vivid dreams.

  • 04:27

Others remember things from long ago that seem very real.

  • 04:31

Lack of oxygen and the introduction of drugs in the brain also play a role in the things

  • 04:35

    people claim to have experienced.

  • 04:37

No matter how sincere they might be, they did not actually go to heaven.

  • 04:41

However, there are also a number of greedy liars who make up elaborate stories, hoping

  • 04:45

to get rich off those who flock to read their rubbish.

  • 04:48

These people are selfish charlatans who peddle their poison for profit.

  • 04:52

They are doing the work of the devil, but claim they were sent by God.

  • 04:56

Beware of false prophets , and do not let them fool you with fables.

  • 04:59

"For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their

  • 05:04

    own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers;

  • 05:09

and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables."

  • 05:13

    - 1 Timothy 4:3-4

  • 05:14

We cannot let personal experiences guide our beliefs.

  • 05:16

The Bible must be our source for doctrine, and everything else must be put to the scrutiny

  • 05:22

    of the Word of God.
