Inside the walls of the Tower of London during the Tudor period, there was a horrifically

  • 00:04

savage contraption used which inflicted so much pain that it killed.

  • 00:10

Those who were unfortunate enough to be tortured on the rack underwent a terrible ordeal which

  • 00:15

resulted in some awful injuries and permanent problems.

  • 00:18

There were a significant number who were also executed after their ordeal on the rack, and

  • 00:24

some were taken to their deaths disfigured by their injuries caused by it.

  • 00:28

The Rack led to the Tower of London developing a notorious reputation for suffering and pain,

  • 00:34

along with the executions that occured there.

  • 00:36

But what actually occured on the rack, and why would someone find themselves on it?

  • 00:48

It’s during the reign of Tudor monarchs such as Henry VIII and Elizabeth I that the

  • 00:53

    rack is mostly associated with.

  • 00:56

But it did have a longer history which dates back to ancient times.

  • 01:00

It’s believed that the Greeks may have used the rack first as a way of torturing slaves

  • 01:05

around 300 years BC, and the whole point of the device was to extract information.

  • 01:10

Herostratus, a man who was later executed for burning down the Temple of Artemis was

  • 01:16

placed on the rack to find out more information about the burning of one of the wonders of

  • 01:20

    the ancient world.

  • 01:22

Then during the Roman times, it was used by Emperor Nero.

  • 01:26

He faced an assassination attempt, and to extract more information from the conspirators

  • 01:30

the rack was used, and was even used on a woman.

  • 01:34

This helped to solidify Nero’s brutal reputation as a feared leader.

  • 01:39

In Britain, the rack first emerged before the Tudor Period around the mid 1400s, and

  • 01:44

the Constable of the Tower of London at the time John Holland brought the device to the

  • 01:48

    fortress.

  • 01:49

This rack became known as the Duke of Exeter’s Daughter, as Holland was the 2nd Duke of Exeter.

  • 01:55

It was during this time that the Rack became infamously used, and used to extract information

  • 02:00

    during interrogations.

  • 02:02

As a device, the rack had a number of different versions created within different countries.

  • 02:07

In Europe, it was used in the form of a ladder where someone would be strung up to and stretched,

  • 02:12

but it usually had a wooden frame that was raised off the ground and it was flat.

  • 02:17

A prisoner would then be placed on it, and at each end of the rack was a roller and rope

  • 02:21

or chains, where someones wrists and ankles would be attached to.

  • 02:25

During the racking, the interrogators would ask a number of questions, starting off slowly

  • 02:30

with turning the rollers which would cause tension and stretching on the prisoners limbs.

  • 02:36

If the prisoner continued to refuse to answer questions and not hand over any information,

  • 02:41

the interrogators would then slowly turn the ratchet and the stretching would continue.

  • 02:46

As the chains cranked and the victim was stretched more, then the strain placed on the joints

  • 02:50

    would be excruciating.

  • 02:52

The shoudlers, elbows, knees and hips would be placed under huge stress, and at times

  • 02:57

the joints would dislocate and separate out of their sockets which was incredibly painful.

  • 03:02

As medical care was poor during the Tudor times also, this could cause permanent disfigurement.

  • 03:08

The muscles would be stretched so much that the arms and legs may be so badly damaged

  • 03:12

that a person may never walk again, and there would be screaming heard throughout the Tower

  • 03:16

    of London.

  • 03:17

The body would pop also and cartilage and ligaments would snap, as would bones as more

  • 03:22

pressure was placed on the limbs.

  • 03:25

If a prisoner continued to refuse, they were continuously racked until they would lose

  • 03:29

consciousness, or if the guards believed they had got enough information they would stop

  • 03:33

but the damage would have been done already.

  • 03:36

The rack was used alongside other torture methods too, for example the Scavenger’s

  • 03:41

    Daughter.

  • 03:42

This was a device made by another Constable of the Tower, and was an A frame which someones

  • 03:46

head, arms and legs would be attached to.

  • 03:48

Then this would swing and the prisoner’s body would contort and compress in bizarre

  • 03:52

    and painful ways.

  • 03:55

When used alongside the rack, which was used the stretch, the compression device of the

  • 03:59

Scavenger’s Daughter would be horrifically painful.

  • 04:03

Also interrogators and guards whilst a prisoner was on the rack would perform other tortures

  • 04:07

such as pulling out toenails and finger nails, and also they would cut someones body or even

  • 04:11

burn them with brands to get them to give over information.

  • 04:16

There was one shocking account of a woman during the Tudor Period being racked for information.

  • 04:21

Anne Askew was a Protestant who was later burned at the stake for heresy.

  • 04:24

She was linked to a plot with Henry VIII’s sixth wife Catherine Parr who herself was

  • 04:29

accused of being too religiously radical.

  • 04:32

To get Anne Askew to give over information about the Queen, she was brutalised on the

  • 04:36

rack and was punished so severely that she could not walk to her execution where she

  • 04:41

    was burned at the stake.

  • 04:43

She was carried on a chair, and then burned on this because her hips and shoulders had

  • 04:48

also dislocated, and the rack completely ruined Anne Askew and caused such pain.

  • 04:54

To make things worse when she fainted, she was revived a number of times to resume her

  • 04:58

    torture causing even more suffering.

  • 05:01

The Constable of the Tower had refused to torture her as he believed it was wrong to

  • 05:05

subject a woman to such an ordeal, and whilst he left the King to speak about it, Anne was

  • 05:11

    tortured.

  • 05:12

Another account of torture on the rack was that of Saint Nicholas Owen, who was a catholic

  • 05:17

    martyr brutally punished on it.

  • 05:19

He refused to give over any information about Catholic plots, and was racked so badly that

  • 05:24

he actually died on the device as he was tortured so severely.

  • 05:27

But the most famous person to be tortured on the Rack was Guy Fawkes.

  • 05:32

He was caught under the Houses of Parliament along with a huge amount of gunpowder and

  • 05:36

he planned to blow the King James I to kingdom come along with his government in the gunpowder

  • 05:41

    plot.

  • 05:42

Fawkes was the one caught and it was considered that he was part of a group, and to get him

  • 05:46

to give over names he was placed on the rack.

  • 05:49

He was tortured so badly that he did eventually give over names, and his signature was completely

  • 05:54

undicipherable when compared to it when he entered to Tower.

  • 05:59

Even the strongest of people would be broken by the rack, and it was a torture method which

  • 06:02

    inflicted such pain and suffering.

  • 06:05

It helped the Tower of London to gain it’s notorious and barbaric reputation, and has

  • 06:09

gone down in History as the most famous torture method used.

  • 06:14

Often just the sight of the rack was enough for someone to give over information to the

  • 06:18

    guards.
