  • 00:01

Hi, this is A Minute of Overpass.

  • 00:02

My name is Eric and I make apps.

  • 00:05

Now this week I've found that Overpass Apps have had over 3 million downloads and I'm

  • 00:09

gonna talk a little bit about how we got those downloads and where we they've come from.

  • 00:18

I was once asked how many downloads you have today and I wasn't able to answer it specifically

  • 00:29

and he was surprised by that but the reason was because there's so many different sources.

  • 00:34

You got iTunes, you got Google Play, you got Amazon, you got the Samsung Store, you got

  • 00:39

various other smaller Android markets, you got the Chinese Android markets, all these

  • 00:43

    kind of stuff.

  • 00:44

So I don't always know on a day-to-day basis how many downloads we've done in total.

  • 00:51

Every few months I'll go through and I'll take all the sources and I'll compile them

  • 00:54

    and put them together.

  • 00:56

And I haven't done it in a few months.

  • 00:58

So, I did it yesterday morning.

  • 00:59

I was surprised to find out that we, Overpass, have exceeded 3 MILLION app downloads globally.

  • 01:07

So, now over 3 million people have downloaded an Overpass app.

  • 01:12

They've seen the splash screen, they've given us some of their attention for at least a

  • 01:16

    few minutes, hopefully longer.

  • 01:18

The actual number here is three million one hundred ninety two thousand and sixty-eight

  • 01:23

    downloads so far.

  • 01:24

So, hey I'm really really pleased about that.

  • 01:28

When we started I wasn't sure we would get any.

  • 01:31

I was surprised when we had the first couple hundreds.

  • 01:35

It takes a lot of faith, it takes a lot of working towards it, a lot of people saying

  • 01:39

"You know what you should do?

  • 01:41

Your idea would be better if you did this or whatever" and just sticking to and staying

  • 01:46

on the course and just keep pushing it.

  • 01:49

So now we're getting about six or seven thousand downloads a day across all the applications

  • 01:55

    so it's really good.

  • 01:56

So here's a breakdown by the market, just to give you an idea where everything is coming

  • 02:02

    from.

  • 02:03

Unlike most developers, Overpass apps are more popular on Google Play than on any other

  • 02:10

    platform.

  • 02:11

So here you can see that seventy-seven percent of all of our downloads come from Google Play.

  • 02:17

Where most app developers will focus more on iTunes so here we only get sixteen percent

  • 02:22

    of downloads coming from iTunes.

  • 02:25

This yellow one here is Amazon, which is a very small portion, and we've only recently

  • 02:30

started putting things back in to Amazon because for a while it didn't seem worth the time

  • 02:35

    to actually do it.

  • 02:36

And this green bit here is Samsung and that one has done very well but we stopped uploading

  • 02:41

to them basically because the Samsung market is just really difficult to use.

  • 02:46

It takes too long to upload a build and then after a while you think well it just slows

  • 02:49

down the whole process so all the stuff on Samsung is actually pretty old.

  • 02:54

    But.

  • 02:56

    that's pretty cool.

  • 02:57

So, three million one hundred ninety thousand and sixty eight.

  • 03:03

Now that's more than the population of Mongolia or Armenia or Albania.

  • 03:09

Now, to be fair, according to the World Population Clock, the global population at this moment

  • 03:16

is over seven billion, three hundred twenty seven million, so you know, we still got a

  • 03:20

    ways to go.

  • 03:21

    So it's not so bad.

  • 03:23

Now if you wanna see where these downloads are coming from here's my App Annie account

  • 03:28

    just for the last month.

  • 03:29

So you can see our biggest market on a day-to-day basis across all the stores, actually this

  • 03:34

excludes Samsung, but this is across iTunes, Google Play and Amazon, is the United States.

  • 03:41

    It's always been the top.

  • 03:42

The US has been our biggest market.

  • 03:43

However, our second biggest market is Brazil and then followed by Mexico and this is big

  • 03:49

    consistently.

  • 03:50

And the reason for that is we started globalizing our apps last year when we started making

  • 03:56

sure that when we release an app we make sure that they're localizable so we can make sure

  • 04:00

we release in Portuguese which as you see is really important.

  • 04:03

And Spanish which is also very important.

  • 04:07

So yes, we're moving along there.

  • 04:13

My message this week I suppose, if there's any, is when you release an app you have to

  • 04:18

be a bit diligent and you have to have a lot of faith.

  • 04:21

This didn't come overnight and for a while, I didn't think it was gonna do well at all.

  • 04:26

So it's really happy about the three million.

  • 04:28

It's not quite the seven billion yet but we're working on it.

  • 04:32

And I'd like to thank the developers Sandee, and Joey, and Rizz, and Calvin, and Kim who

  • 04:38

    are on our team.

  • 04:39

And also Minesh and his team for all the help over the past few years.

  • 04:43

And like I said, we're releasing new apps everyday.

  • 04:46

We released two last week and it's just gonna keep getting bigger. So, anyway, just a little

  • 04:51

    bit of humble brag there.

  • 04:55

That's it for this week's A Minute of Overpass.

  • 04:56

Now, if you're listening to this on the iTunes podcast, please leave a review, I'd love to

  • 05:01

    hear what you think.

  • 05:02

And if you're watching this on YouTube or Facebook or LinkedIn, please leave a comment.

  • 05:06

I'd love to know what you think as well.

  • 05:09

That's it for this week, talk to you next week.

  • 05:10

    Goodbye.
