  • 00:27

    Today

  • 00:28

It is a big day for cinematic VR filmmakers.

  • 00:32

Insta360 Titan, after the official launch announcement four months

  • 00:37

    ago, finally start to ship.

  • 00:40

If you pre-order your Titan, you should have it in your hand soon.

  • 00:44

I have been very lucky selected as one of the

  • 00:47

few creators that participate in the Titan beta program and

  • 00:51

have been shooting with the Titan beta unit for almost three months.

  • 00:56

I want to give you an unbiased review of the Insta360 Titan immediately, so you can

  • 01:04

decide if you should upgrade your current camera setup to Titan or

  • 01:11

wait on the next cinematic VR camera.

  • 01:14

If you can’t wait to watch the full video, I can tell you now that I enjoy

  • 01:20

the Titan so much that I decide to purchase the Titan official unit

  • 01:25

    for my production company.

  • 01:27

I provided some 10K3D and 11K2D Lighting in the Bottle festival footage from Michael and

  • 01:35

some official low light footage for you to view in Crystal View on Oculus Go.

  • 01:42

After you watch those in your VR headset, let's dive right in the review.

  • 02:09

Hey, what’s up everybody, it is your Boi Hugh here from CreatorUp, the

  • 02:14

YouTube channel that dedicated to beginner and professional VR

  • 02:19

    Filmmakers.

  • 02:20

If you want to learn all the latest filmmaking techniques

  • 02:23

in VR360 and VR180, don’t forget to subscribe and hit the notification

  • 02:30

    bell.

  • 02:31

Before I start, I want to say no one sponsors this video.

  • 02:35

Most of my videos are not sponsored, so I can give unbiased

  • 02:39

reviews on all the VR cameras.

  • 02:41

I am not afraid to offend camera manufacturers and point out the problems

  • 02:47

I always look after my viewers and put my viewers, that’s you, first.

  • 02:52

    Same goes with this review.

  • 02:55

Insta360 Titan, just like any other cameras have its strong points and its weakness,

  • 03:03

you need to understand what it does to your production

  • 03:08

and what it means to your POST workflow.

  • 03:11

11K 3D 360 footage is very nice, but can you even

  • 03:15

handle it with your current machine, that is something you should find

  • 03:19

out before you even consider purchasing it.

  • 03:22

    Spec.

  • 03:25

I already made 2 initial review videos right here.

  • 03:29

I will highly recommend you to go check it out to learn

  • 03:32

about the spec of this breast.

  • 03:35

Basically, it uses 8 MFT sensors instead of small sensors like

  • 03:42

    the Insta360 Pro 2.

  • 03:45

With big sensors and 8 big high-quality lenses -

  • 03:49

you can capture up to 10K 3D or 11K 2D 360 footage with fantastic image quality, low

  • 03:59

    noise, and low compression artifacts.

  • 04:01

If you don’t understand why this is a huge deal for professional VR filmmakers, I will

  • 04:07

suggest you to go check out VR denoiser tutorial right here and understand sensor noises and

  • 04:13

compression artifacts and why they are bad for you and end up causing you more money

  • 04:20

    to fix in POST.

  • 04:22

One thing no one mentioned but hidden in the spec somewhere is that simultaneous live-streaming

  • 04:29

and recording is supported in 8K 3D.

  • 04:33

Insta360 Pro 2 only supports Livestream and recording in 8K monoscopic.

  • 04:38

Lot's of the live stream jobs, besides streaming in 4K 2D or 3D on Facebook or YouTube, lots

  • 04:46

of my clients require archive a high-quality stereoscopic version for later post-production

  • 04:52

    edit for a recap video.

  • 04:55

And they want that in 3D.

  • 04:57

Now it is possible to do it all in one instead of renting extra cameras.

  • 05:05

Also, Titan supports 8-bit 8K 3D in 50fps - to capture slow motion without sacrifice

  • 05:14

    resolution.

  • 05:16

This keeps your whole production in 8K 3D instead of dropping your final render to 6K

  • 05:22

    3D like using Insta360 Pro 2.

  • 05:26

Slow motion capture is more often than you think.

  • 05:29

Also with 50fps, it will help avoid flickers when you film in other countries like in Europe.

  • 05:35

I know, it is not 60fps.

  • 05:38

But it is close enough, and it looks good when slow it down.

  • 05:43

I shoot many sports VR video, and it is nice not to have to choose between frame rate and

  • 05:49

    resolution all the time.

  • 05:54

One of the reasons why I decide to purchase the Titan is the 10-bit color

  • 06:00

    depth.

  • 06:01

Titan is the ONLY ALL-IN-ONE VR camera that can do 10-bit color

  • 06:05

    in Video Capture.

  • 06:07

Why is this a bid deal?

  • 06:09

Watch this explain video and you will know why.

  • 06:12

Don’t just listen to me, my friend Mark Lambert, who shot with the

  • 06:16

Titan can tell you all about why he enjoys the Titan image quality.

  • 06:22

He and his daughter are actually on the Titan official press release.

  • 06:26

Just try to respect his time and don’t blow up his inbox.

  • 06:33

In term of camera control and usability, Titan is a lot like Insta360

  • 06:39

    Pro 2.

  • 06:40

In fact, the Titan app looks almost identical to the Pro 2

  • 06:44

    camera app.

  • 06:45

If you are familiar with Pro or Pro 2, there are almost 0

  • 06:50

learn curve for learning how to operate the Titan - which I

  • 06:54

    enjoy.

  • 06:55

Essential features like FlowState Stabilization, Farsight camera

  • 07:00

control are all part of the Titan package.

  • 07:04

The Farsight work extremely well with the Titan, better than my Insta360

  • 07:10

Pro 2, even on my Beta unit.

  • 07:13

Insta360 learn from their old mistakes and improve in

  • 07:17

every way in the design of the Titan.

  • 07:24

Low light performance is another welcome feature introduced in Titan

  • 07:29

    - Both in Photo and Video.

  • 07:32

Low light image is clear and better looking that any ALL-IN-ONE VR camera I had

  • 07:38

    used.

  • 07:43

Let’s talk about Stitching and parallax.

  • 07:47

Big sensors camera will have parallax issues.

  • 07:50

If you used Z Cam V1 Pro, you know that already.

  • 07:55

    Especially for Stereoscopic production.

  • 07:56

I will suggest pushing your talents further away from the camera than

  • 08:00

your usual production using cameras like the Insta360 Pro 2.

  • 08:05

For monoscopic, thanks to the 200 degrees improved giant fisheye lenses, you get decent

  • 08:11

overlap between lenses - so you can always fix any stitching issues with Mistika VR in

  • 08:17

    post.

  • 08:18

If you follow this channel, you know this workflow well.

  • 08:23

I will provide my Titan template for Mistika VR download below.

  • 08:26

    And try it out yourself.

  • 08:31

Okay, now let’s get real here.

  • 08:33

Do you really need 11K 360 footage?

  • 08:38

To me personally, this is not realistic.

  • 08:41

As some of you might know already, I recently upgrade my entire pipeline

  • 08:46

to try to handle 11K Titan footage with the Nvidia Titan RTX Graphic

  • 08:52

    cards.

  • 08:53

I can tell you my machine form Maingear is a breast - but

  • 08:57

    it is not cheap.

  • 08:58

Not only you need to spend the money on purchasing

  • 09:01

the Titan, or rent the Titan for most of the production, you also need

  • 09:06

to make sure your editing machine can handle Titan footage.

  • 09:10

Right now, Adobe Premiere CAN NOT even create an 11K sequence to edit 11K footage.

  • 09:19

    This is a huge bottleneck.

  • 09:20

My workaround is to use Adobe After Effects as my editing

  • 09:25

    software.

  • 09:26

But not everyone is comfortable with After Effects.

  • 09:31

You can certainly use Davinci Resolve - but Resolve

  • 09:34

does not have a streamlined workflow to deal with 3D Stereoscopic 360

  • 09:38

    footage just yet.

  • 09:40

Another option will be Nuke, but that is very unrealistic

  • 09:45

    for any small production firm.

  • 09:47

Then the next question is displaying 11K video footage.

  • 09:53

Beside foveation technology, there is NO popular

  • 09:56

headset can see 6K footages, let alone 11K.

  • 10:00

So it means the majority of the people can not even see the

  • 10:04

beautiful 11K footage you shot unless they use technology like Visbit

  • 10:10

or the Insta360 very own crystal view.

  • 10:14

But can Crystal View deliver true 11K in headset like Oculus Go or Oculus

  • 10:19

Quest - 2 of the most popular VR headset today?

  • 10:23

    The answer is sadly NO.

  • 10:26

You can watch this video for more information.

  • 10:29

Don't get me wrong, the Titan footage in Crystal View on Oculus Go looks absolutely amazing

  • 10:37

even it is not true 10K 3D or 11K.

  • 10:40

The foveation tracking of Crystal view is slightly delayed and has a circle Screen door

  • 10:45

    effect.

  • 10:46

It does make me a little bit dizzy.

  • 10:48

You can watch up to, theoretically, 12K resolution 360 video using

  • 10:54

VR player like Visbit with headsets like Pico G2 4K or Vive Focus - but

  • 11:01

not many people, in the US at least, own those headsets.

  • 11:05

I have it and I can tell you it looks absolutely amazing

  • 11:09

without delay and screen door effects.

  • 11:12

But you simply just can not see it b/c you don’t have the headset.

  • 11:16

I will also have the Skyworth 8K headset in 2 weeks - a headset that can play natively

  • 11:23

    8K video.

  • 11:25

So it will be really interesting to see if it works with my Titan footage.

  • 11:29

So don’t forget to subscribe if you want to watch that video.

  • 11:33

If your goal is NOT 11K, but better looking 8K 3D 360 video, especially

  • 11:40

for low light production, then Titan is a great choice.

  • 11:43

It shoots beautiful 10-bit video in HEVC - which allow

  • 11:48

you to really color grade in post without banding issue or noise issue.

  • 11:54

I am excited to show you more of my personal Titan production soon

  • 11:57

    - so stay tuned.

  • 12:00

One other thing I want to be absolutely real to you, don’t rely on

  • 12:06

    FlowState stabilization.

  • 12:07

It is nice to have FlowState so your moving footage look smooth without a gimbal - BUT,

  • 12:14

this is a huge BUT so pay close attention: you

  • 12:19

can NOT really use FlowState stabilization if you want flawless

  • 12:24

360 footage without any stitching error.

  • 12:27

Base on lots of my experience, the Insta360 Stitcher never

  • 12:33

get a perfect stitching result, especially the camera is on the

  • 12:38

move, with pattern background like a fence, and close objects are crossing the stitch

  • 12:44

    line.

  • 12:45

So you need to fix it in Mistika VR.

  • 12:48

But Mistika VR does not read FlowSate stabilization data, just yet.

  • 12:53

So it won’t produce stabilized footage if you want to fix all the stitching issues.

  • 12:58

If you own the Insta360 Pro 2 camera, you will know exactly what I am talking about.

  • 13:05

There is currently no solution to this.

  • 13:08

If we do, I will be the first one to tell you.

  • 13:11

So just don’t bank on stabilization as your reason to purchase Titan.

  • 13:16

As you see right here, to truly achieve stable movement with perfect

  • 13:21

stitched Titan footage, you need professional rover with an enhanced

  • 13:25

physical gimbal that can hold the weight of the Insta360 Titan - which

  • 13:29

is close to 10 pounds (or 5KG) with battery.

  • 13:34

To my knowledge, the only one right now works with Titan is the Motion

  • 13:40

Impossible M Pro - an upgraded version of my old rover - Mantis.

  • 13:46

I will do a review of the M Pro - a motion-control rover system with the

  • 13:50

Insta360 Titan soon, so stay tuned for that video.

  • 13:54

It is going to be a really good one and answer lots of your questions.

  • 13:59

Titan still uses SD cards for the storage solution.

  • 14:05

It uses 9 regular SD cards.

  • 14:08

So it is 9 times of the risk if any of your SD cards go wrong.

  • 14:14

SSD is still not supported like the Old Insta360 Pro - which is one of my favorite features.

  • 14:21

So my advice is to invest in good SD cards and test all of them before your filming job.

  • 14:28

Corrupted SD card is the most common enemy in any 360 productions.

  • 14:33

I hope you enjoy this unbiased initial review of the Insta360 Titan.

  • 14:39

The bottom line is, figure out your production requirements and your

  • 14:43

    needs.

  • 14:44

If you are going to shoot a lot of tight space in 3D, like

  • 14:48

inside of a car for car commercials, Titan prob is not the right

  • 14:54

    choice.

  • 14:55

If you hope to upgrade to 11K production, I don’t think the

  • 15:00

POST pipeline and the end delivery platform are there yet.

  • 15:04

It will be kinda waste of money to get Titan for that

  • 15:07

    reason alone.

  • 15:09

But if you are looking for 10 bit 8K 3D 360 production, especially in

  • 15:17

challenging lighting environment with slow-motion involved, Titan is an excellent camera for

  • 15:24

    that.

  • 15:25

And your Colorists will really thank you for that.

  • 15:28

Clearer 8K video will also help with POST processing like stabilization and roto tracking

  • 15:35

with Mocha Pro - make your CG artists happy as well.

  • 15:39

I will have more tutorials and follow up reviews of the Titan coming

  • 15:44

soon when I have my production unit which is tomorrow according to UPS.

  • 15:49

Download the Insta360 Titan sample footage below and check it out yourself.

  • 15:55

My friend Michale did a great job in capturing LIB so I want to give him a shoutout.

  • 16:02

And comment below and tell me what you think.

  • 16:05

Will you upgrade to Titan or happy with what you have right now.

  • 16:10

Don’t forget to give this video a thumb up if you enjoy it.

  • 16:15

If you are not a professional VR filmmaker and will never find the

  • 16:19

needs for such an expensive camera, I still very appreciated you stick

  • 16:24

around and willing to learn more.

  • 16:27

Even you are just a casual 360 video creator, and happy with your Insta360 ONE

  • 16:33

X or GoPro Fusion, your boy Hugh will still encourage you to learn more

  • 16:39

about how the professionals do thing - to home your skill

  • 16:43

and improve your video quality using some of the tips and tricks

  • 16:48

I am going to show you in the upcoming series - 360VR editing, from

  • 16:53

    beginner to master.

  • 16:55

Knowledge is power, by watching this video, it makes you a better 360

  • 17:01

content creator than anyone else who do not watch this.

  • 17:04

Okay, I think I need some sleep now.

  • 17:08

I just got back from a filming job in Washington DC and worked overnight

  • 17:14

on this review video so you can be the first one to know the in and out

  • 17:20

    of Titan.

  • 17:21

So, like, share and I will see you in the next video.
