  • 00:00

What you are looking at is a satellite view of a rather unknown circular feature within

  • 00:04

a section of the Saharan Desert in Algeria.

  • 00:07

You might think that this feature is just another volcanic explosion crater much like

  • 00:12

this maar found in the Manzaz Volcanic Field.

  • 00:15

However, this feature is not a volcanic explosion crater but rather a young impact crater.

  • 00:20

Known as Amguid Crater, it is one of the best preserved craters on the African continent

  • 00:25

which formed within the last 100,000 years.

  • 00:28

So, exactly when did this impact crater form?

  • 00:32

How large was the asteroid which formed it?

  • 00:34

This video will discuss this well preserved impact crater, and describe the scope of the

  • 00:39

    impact.

  • 00:40

The Amguid Impact Crater can be found in the south central section of Algeria.

  • 00:43

Specifically, it is 225 kilometers southeast of the city of In Salah.

  • 00:49

Before I state how old this impact crater is, I must note that very few fragments of

  • 00:53

the meteorite which formed it have been recovered.

  • 00:56

Thus, age dating this crater is limited to a guess based on the level of erosion present.

  • 01:02

Official sources state that this impact crater is younger than 100,000 years old, and I agree.

  • 01:07

With my knowledge of erosional features, I'd place the age of Amguid Crater at approximately

  • 01:12

    80,000 years old.

  • 01:14

Regardless of its true age, it formed when a small asteroid collided with Earth several

  • 01:19

tens of thousands of years ago.

  • 01:21

This asteroid measured approximately 50 meters or 164 feet wide, and was a type of space

  • 01:26

rock known as a carbonaceous chondrite.

  • 01:29

Regular chondrites consist of numerous small spherules of rock compressed together by finer

  • 01:34

    particles of material.

  • 01:36

Carbonaceous chondrites are a subtype of this group as they contain abundant carbon compounds

  • 01:41

    and sometimes include amino acids.

  • 01:43

Thus, this class of meteorites are thought to be partially responsible for the origin

  • 01:48

of life on Earth by providing some of the necessary building blocks.

  • 01:52

As the asteroid made its final approach towards earth, it began to further accelerate due

  • 01:56

to the pull of Earth’s gravity.

  • 01:58

Entering the upper atmosphere, this mass of rock was traveling at 13 kilometers per second

  • 02:03

    or 29,000 miles per hour.

  • 02:06

Although this sounds incredibly fast, it is actually quite slow for an asteroid.

  • 02:10

I want to note that if this asteroid had been traveling a mere 20% faster, it would have

  • 02:15

been completely vaporized and exploded into numerous pieces in the atmosphere.

  • 02:20

However, since it was travelling at a slower speed, only a section of material broke off

  • 02:24

    during atmospheric entry.

  • 02:26

When these pieces impacted a patch of ground measuring 200 by 200 meters wide, they generated

  • 02:32

a massive explosion equivalent in energy to the detonation of 240 kilotons of tnt.

  • 02:38

This ejected large pieces of bedrock, flinging them several thousand feet into the air.

  • 02:43

As a shockwave was generated, the site of the initial impact faced a 2000 kilometer

  • 02:47

    per hour gust of wind.

  • 02:50

Expanding outwards from the center, the wind speeds slowly decreased.

  • 02:54

At 5 kilometers away, a 100 kilometer per hour shockwave would be felt.

  • 02:58

At 10 kilometers distant, its intensity was only 37 kilometers per hour.

  • 03:03

Although this city clearly didn't exist at the time of this impact, if you were to be

  • 03:07

in the approximate site of In Salah today, you would experience a light shockwave along

  • 03:12

with a loud boom which would rock across the mountains of the landscape at a volume of

  • 03:17

    44 decibels.

  • 03:18

As the dust cleared, the new impact crater became visible.

  • 03:21

It measured 525 meters wide and 120 meters deep.

  • 03:26

Since the impacting asteroid broke into several pieces before it hit, the crater formed was

  • 03:30

    not a perfect circle.

  • 03:32

The fragments of this asteroid are few and far between, as the vast majority of material

  • 03:36

was vaporized on impact due to its structural instability.

  • 03:40

Since the formation of Amguid Crater, the bottom 55 meters have been filled in my sands

  • 03:45

blown in from the Saharan desert.

  • 03:47

This fascinating crater is not the only impact crater within Algeria.

  • 03:52

To the northeast is the circular Tin Bider crater which contains numerous rings of hardened

  • 03:57

    rock.
