  • 00:10

    Hello there!

  • 00:13

There was a time when IBM PC Compatibles were much quieter than they were now.

  • 00:18

    Not the fans of course.

  • 00:20

The fans were a lot noiser.

  • 00:21

But in terms of soundcard technology, back in the 80s and early 90s, a lot of IBM PC

  • 00:27

Compatibles, didn't have sound cards, unless you had a lot of money and you could afford

  • 00:33

    a soundblaster or Adlib card.

  • 00:35

Now my first IBM PC Compatible, didn't have a soundcard.

  • 00:39

But there was a piece of software - this is what I have just dug out of my shoebox of

  • 00:43

floppies - that allowed you to drive sounds, through your PC Speaker!

  • 00:48

Ahhh yes, the PC Speaker, sometimes also referred to as the PC Beeper or PC Squeaker.

  • 00:56

It's been with us since the first IBM Personal Computer, the 5150.

  • 01:01

Back then it was a typical 2 1/4 " magnetic driven speaker, mounted onto the case which

  • 01:06

would provide an array of beeps if there was a hardware fault or perhaps if your keyboard

  • 01:10

    just wasn't plugged in.

  • 01:12

As PC's evolved, the speaker remained with us, usually in the form of a piezoelectric

  • 01:17

device, which is much smaller and typically just dangles off the motherboard.

  • 01:21

With my recent PC build, the speaker proved it's continued worth, bringing some faulty

  • 01:22

    memory to my attention.

  • 01:23

With no visual cues, it's often necessary to refer to your motherboard manual at this

  • 01:24

    point to trace the problem.

  • 01:25

But the PC speaker is utilised for more than just faults.

  • 01:29

Any software package can make use of the speaker through a programmable interval timer providing

  • 01:34

a similar setup to the early ZX Spectrums, with the output driven via.

  • 01:38

the CPU rather than dedicated audio hardware.

  • 01:41

In typical operation beeps can be driven by a 1 bit input, however richer sound can be

  • 01:46

    sent using pulse width modulation.

  • 01:49

Using this method, more complex waveforms can be encoded into a pulsing signal, allowing

  • 01:53

a close approximation of 8 bit audio to be sent.

  • 01:57

This uses up more CPU time than any usual PC Speaker activity, but allows for some impressive

  • 02:03

sounds in games like Space Hulk, with in game sound effects and even speech from the rubber

  • 02:08

    lipped terminator.

  • 02:12

Of course, if you have a sound card, then you also get music, and the whole experience

  • 02:24

    is much more pleasant.

  • 02:26

But like a lot of people, I didn't have a sound card for a number of months after obtaining

  • 02:30

my PC, so to find a driver which allowed Wave files to be played through Windows 3.11 was

  • 02:45

    revelation.

  • 03:05

This particular driver is courtesy of Microsoft in 1992.

  • 03:10

Distributed as freeware, it came bundled with various software packages, but for this video,

  • 03:15

I'm only concerned with what it sounds like.

  • 03:18

Installation is a doddle through the Windows control panel, and your treat for this fleeting

  • 03:22

moment of configuration is the glorious Windows startup sound.

  • 03:29

And this is what it sounds like with a Soundblaster.

  • 03:33

It's not perfect by any means, but it was a vast improvement over this.......

  • 03:42

Now those sounds - or lack of sounds - were played through emulation, but to get the real

  • 03:47

"90s speaker" experience, we need to hear the sounds through that tinny little speaker.

  • 03:52

So here's how it compares to its Soundblaster driven counterpart.

  • 04:43

You may notice that moving the mouse creates a crackling sound.

  • 04:47

This is because the mouse shares interrupts and processor time with the driver.

  • 04:51

So any interaction with the system leads to some sound degradation.

  • 04:54

Over what is already, pretty degraded sound!

  • 04:59

    And it doesn't stop there.

  • 05:00

We've covered Waveform sounds, but what about MIDI.

  • 05:03

Now MIDI files don't hold a waveform as such.

  • 05:07

They just specify instructions for the sound card to interpret.

  • 05:11

It's really the last vestige of computer generated music before CD audio came along, and used

  • 05:16

in most DOS games throughout the late 80s and 90s, thanks to the arrival of hardware

  • 05:20

like the Adlib music synthesizer card in 1987.

  • 05:25

But there is a Microsoft MIDI driver for the PC Speaker, and it sounds like this....

  • 05:34

Not something you'd want to listen to for an extended - in fact - any period of time

  • 05:39

as it simply converts one track of the MIDI file into beeps.

  • 05:43

Good for composing Nokia ringtones perhaps, crap for anything else.

  • 05:48

Here's what Canyon.mid sounds like with a Soundblaster 16 FM synthesis card.

  • 06:04

There were other tools which tried to make use of the PC Speaker such as Access Software's

  • 06:08

"RealSound", integrated into several games in the late 80s...

  • 06:12

And you could even desolder your PC Speaker wire and connect it up to a stereo for better

  • 06:16

    sound.

  • 06:17

Some soundcards even had PC Speaker connections to allow the audio to come through your MAIN

  • 06:21

    speakers.

  • 06:23

But by this point, real soundcards were appearing and the technology was soon super-seeded,

  • 06:29

as the PC platform fought off machines such as the Amiga which has sophisticated sound

  • 06:35

    from the go.

  • 06:36

For me, this art of pushing hardware to it's limits is utterly engrossing, and we'll be

  • 06:41

visiting some other areas of sound over the coming months, including the full story of

  • 06:46

    PC compatible Soundcards.

  • 06:48

Stay tuned, but until then, thanks for watching and have a good evening.
