  • 00:00

Today on Nerd of the Rings, we are covering the complete lives and travels of Merry and

  • 00:05

    Pippin.

  • 00:06

This is in honor of my upcoming interview with Billy Boyd and Dominic Monaghan, premiering

  • 00:11

on the channel at the link in the description!

  • 00:13

Now there’s a lot to get to, so we are going to hit the highlights in the lives of these

  • 00:17

    two heroic hobbits!

  • 00:19

Meriadoc Brandybuck is born in Buckland in 2982 of the Third Age.

  • 00:25

He is the son of Saradoc Brandybuck and Esmeralda Took.

  • 00:30

    Through Frodo’s mother, who was a Brandybuck, Merry is Frodo’s first-cousin, once-removed.

  • 00:36

After Frodo’s parents die in 2980, Frodo would go to live with his Brandybuck relatives

  • 00:42

in Brandy Hall - the huge central smial (or hobbit hole) in Buckland, which was the ancestral

  • 00:49

    home of the Brandybuck family.

  • 00:52

Frodo would live there with Merry and his other relatives from the age of 12 to the

  • 00:56

age of 21, when Bilbo invites him to live in Bag End as his heir.

  • 01:02

One year later, in the Spring of 2990, Peregrin Took is born to Eglantine Banks, and Merry’s

  • 01:09

    uncle - Paladin Took II.

  • 01:12

In addition to being Merry’s cousin, Pippin is also related to both Frodo as his first-cousin,

  • 01:17

    once-removed.

  • 01:19

We don’t know a great deal about Merry and Pippin prior to Bilbo’s 111th Birthday Party.

  • 01:25

One nugget we do know, however, is that sometime around the year 3000, Merry sees Bilbo become

  • 01:32

invisible in order to avoid the Sackville-Bagginses.

  • 01:36

He manages to follow Bilbo’s path and sees him reappear and place something golden into

  • 01:41

    his pocket.

  • 01:43

His curiosity piqued, Merry would always keep an eye out for strange things and would even

  • 01:49

go so far as to take a peek at Bilbo’s diary in Bag End.

  • 01:53

On September 22, 3001, Bilbo hosts his Long Expected Party.

  • 02:00

After Bilbo makes his grand disappearance, Merry comes to suspect that Frodo will soon

  • 02:06

    follow.

  • 02:07

Of course, this would be over a period of 17 years, but by April 3018, the evidence

  • 02:12

    becomes even greater.

  • 02:14

It is in April 3018 that Gandalf returns to the Shire and confirms Bilbo’s ring is The

  • 02:19

    One.

  • 02:20

Merry notices that Frodo has secret talks with Gandalf and begins to say farewell to

  • 02:25

    his favorite places.

  • 02:27

Frodo sells Bag End and feigns a move to Crickhollow to hide his leaving The Shire.

  • 02:33

However, Merry had confided in a group of Frodo’s friends his suspicions.

  • 02:39

This group of conspirators - Peregrin Took, Samwise Gamgee, and Fredegar “Fatty” Bolger

  • 02:45

    - would happen to be the same hobbits Frodo would enlist to help him move to Crickhollow.

  • 02:51

Frodo, Sam, and Pippin make their way toward Crickhollow, having close calls with the Nazgul

  • 02:57

who are searching the Shire, and meeting the High Elves led by Gildor along the way.

  • 03:02

Meanwhile, Merry and Fatty are preparing for their arrival at Frodo’s new house, having

  • 03:07

taken a wagon of Frodo’s possessions earlier.

  • 03:10

As Frodo comes to Farmer Maggot’s, Merry begins to worry that his friends may be lost,

  • 03:16

and crosses Bucklebury Ferry to search for them.

  • 03:19

Fortunately, he encounters Farmer Maggot’s wagon, where Frodo, Sam, and Pippin are hiding.

  • 03:26

After having dinner at Crickhollow, Frodo plans to tell his friends that he will be

  • 03:29

    leaving the Shire.

  • 03:31

At this point, the conspirators reveal that they have been aware of his plans for some

  • 03:35

time - and that they will accompany him.

  • 03:37

Fatty Bolger would remain behind, living in Frodo’s house and even wearing Frodo’s

  • 03:38

clothes in order to keep up appearances that Frodo was indeed living in Crickhollow.

  • 03:39

"You can trust us to stick to you through thick and thin - to the bitter end.

  • 03:42

And you can trust us to keep any secret of yours - closer than you keep it yourself.

  • 03:46

But you cannot trust us to let you face trouble alone, and go off without a word.

  • 03:52

    We are your friends, Frodo."

  • 04:00

    - Merry

  • 04:04

The four hobbits make their way through the Old Forest and come across Old Man Willow,

  • 04:09

who captures Merry and Pippin within his roots.

  • 04:12

Fortunately, they are saved by Tom Bombadil, who gives them food and rest at his home.

  • 04:17

As they leave the Old Forest on September 29, they come across the Barrow-downs, where

  • 04:23

they are captured by a Barrow-wight.

  • 04:24

Fortunately, Frodo summons Tom Bombadil, who saves them once again.

  • 04:30

Tom gives the hobbits Daggers of Westernesse which are found within the barrow.

  • 04:35

These daggers, made by the Dunedain, were made specifically for the war against the

  • 04:40

    Witch-king around 1600 years earlier.

  • 04:44

Finally free of the perils of the Old Forest and the Barrow-downs, the hobbits make their

  • 04:48

way to Bree and stay at the Prancing Pony.

  • 04:51

While staying at the Inn, Pippin begins to tell the story of Bilbo’s birthday party

  • 04:55

    and disappearance.

  • 04:56

This leads Frodo to begin to sing “The Man in the Moon Stayed Up Too Late” to prevent

  • 05:01

Pippin from revealing anything about the ring.

  • 05:04

During the song, Frodo falls off the table and the ring slips on his finger.

  • 05:09

That night, the Nazgul come to Bree.

  • 05:12

As the others meet with Strider, Merry goes out for a walk, where he sees a black rider.

  • 05:17

He attempts to follow the mysterious rider, but it disappears and Merry is overtaken by

  • 05:22

    the Black Breath.

  • 05:24

Fortunately, before the riders could harm him, Nob - a hobbit working at the Prancing

  • 05:29

Pony - finds Merry and returns him to the Inn.

  • 05:33

Merry and Pippin travel with Sam, Frodo, and Strider to Weathertop, where they are attacked

  • 05:38

by the Nazgul and on to Rivendell.

  • 05:41

Unlike in the films, Sam is the only one to eavesdrop at the Council of Elrond on October

  • 05:46

    25.

  • 05:47

It wouldn’t be until much later, on December 18, when Merry and Pippin would make their

  • 05:52

    voices heard.

  • 05:53

Elrond, noting that the hope of their errand lies in speed and secrecy, chooses to appoint

  • 05:59

a group of seven to accompany Frodo and Sam.

  • 06:03

He names Gandalf, Legolas, Gimli, and Aragorn, but states that the remaining two are yet

  • 06:08

    to be chosen.

  • 06:09

Pippin, dismayed at being left behind, says that he and Merry want to go as well.

  • 06:15

Elrond is hesitant, but at Gandalf’s encouragement, he appoints Merry and Pippin as the final

  • 06:20

members of the Fellowship of the Ring.

  • 06:23

The Fellowship departs Rivendell on December 25 and after a failed attempt to pass Caradhras,

  • 06:30

and a nighttime attack by wolves, they make their way to Moria.

  • 06:34

It is here where we get the first real taste of Pippin’s knack for annoying Gandalf.

  • 06:39

“What are you going to do then?’ asked Pippin, undaunted by the wizard’s bristling

  • 06:44

    brows.

  • 06:45

“Knock on the doors with your head, Peregrin Took,’ said Gandalf.

  • 06:49

‘But if that does not shatter them, and I am allowed a little peace from foolish questions,

  • 06:54

I will seek for the opening words.”

  • 06:57

Later, Pippin’s natural curiosity overtakes his judgement when he drops a rock down a

  • 07:02

well as the Fellowship is travelling through Moria - leading to the sounds of drums in

  • 07:08

    the deep.

  • 07:09

    “What’s that?’

  • 07:10

    cried Gandalf.

  • 07:11

He was relieved when Pippin confessed what he had done; but he was angry, and Pippin

  • 07:16

    could see his eye glinting.

  • 07:18

‘Fool of a Took!’ he growled.

  • 07:20

‘This is a serious journey, not a hobbit walking-party.

  • 07:23

Throw yourself in next time, and then you will be no further nuisance.

  • 07:27

    Now be quiet!”

  • 07:29

The following day, they would come to the Chamber of Mazarbul and the Bridge of Khazadum,

  • 07:35

where they would lose the Grey Wizard.

  • 07:37

The Fellowship makes its way to Lothlorien (arrives Jan 22), where they would rest for

  • 07:42

    nearly a month.

  • 07:44

On February 16, they set out, bidding farewell to Lorien.

  • 07:48

At their parting, Galadriel gifts Merry and Pippin each with a silver belt.

  • 07:54

The Fellowship makes its way south on the Anduin River, passing the Argonath and camping

  • 07:59

at Parth Galen on February 25.

  • 08:02

The following day, the company is waylaid by a group made of orcs from Isengard, Mordor,

  • 08:07

    and the North.

  • 08:09

As they are searching for Frodo, Merry and Pippin run directly into a group of the orcs.

  • 08:14

Boromir arrives and attempts to rescue the halflings, but a group of the mighty Uruk-hai

  • 08:20

arrive and shoot him with arrows.

  • 08:22

Merry and Pippin are carried off, Boromir is slain, and the Fellowship is broken.

  • 08:29

The following day, as the orcs carry Merry and Pippin across the plains of Rohan, Pippin

  • 08:34

runs away from the orcs, not in hopes of escape, but in hopes of leaving a sign.

  • 08:40

He leaves his elven brooch (broach) - and his own footprints - off the trampled path

  • 08:45

of the orcs, giving Aragorn a clear sign that he and Merry were still alive.

  • 08:51

Two days later, the orc company would arrive at the outskirts of Fangorn Forest.

  • 08:56

Thanks to an attack by Eomer’s Rohirrim, they are able to escape into Fangorn Forest,

  • 09:02

    where they meet Treebeard.

  • 09:04

Over the coming days, they discuss the state of events with Treebeard, drink ent-draught

  • 09:09

    (draft), and attend the Entmoot.

  • 09:12

The ent-draught causes the pair to grow to the point where they would be the tallest

  • 09:16

hobbits in the history of The Shire.

  • 09:19

During the Entmoot, they are introduced to Quickbeam - one of the most hasty ents, who

  • 09:24

had already made up his mind about going to battle Saruman.

  • 09:28

After a time in Quickbeam’s house, Merry and Pippin march with the Ents in the Attack

  • 09:33

on Isengard on the night of March 2.

  • 09:37

In the end, Isengard would be flooded, Saruman’s servants destroyed, and the Tower of Orthanc

  • 09:43

    under siege.

  • 09:44

In the aftermath of battle, (March 3) as the hobbits are sitting upon their field of victory,

  • 09:49

Gandalf arrives in great hurry and great need.

  • 09:54

He halted just by us and looked down at us.

  • 09:57

    “Gandalf!”

  • 09:58

I said at last, but my voice was only a whisper.

  • 10:01

    Did he say: “Hullo, Pippin!

  • 10:02

    This is a pleasant surprise!”?

  • 10:04

    No, indeed!

  • 10:05

He said: “Get up, you tom-fool of a Took!

  • 10:07

Where, in the name of wonder, in all this ruin is Treebeard?

  • 10:10

    I want him.

  • 10:11

    Quick!”

  • 10:12

Treebeard agrees to send the Huorns to Helm’s Deep, helping to secure Rohan’s ultimate

  • 10:17

victory on the morning of March 4.

  • 10:20

The following day, Merry and Pippin are reunited with most of the Fellowship as Gandalf, Aragorn,

  • 10:26

Legolas, and Gimli accompany Theoden to the Parley with Saruman at Isengard.

  • 10:32

In a moment of anger, Wormtongue throws the palantir from the tower of Orthanc, which

  • 10:37

    Gandalf promptly takes.

  • 10:40

That night, Pippin’s curiosity once again gets the better of him.

  • 10:44

He steals the Palantir as Gandalf sleeps and is seen by Sauron.

  • 10:48

Gandalf awakes and a fell beast flies overhead, on its way to Orthanc.

  • 10:54

Gandalf realizes that war is imminent, takes Pippin and rides for Minas Tirith.

  • 11:00

Gandalf also realizes the opportunity this situation has presented - Sauron, seeing Pippin

  • 11:06

in the palantir, has mistakenly assumed that Pippin is the halfling carrying the One Ring

  • 11:12

and that he is currently at Isengard with Saruman.

  • 11:16

So long as Sauron believes Pippin has the ring, he will not be looking for Frodo.

  • 11:22

As Gandalf and Pippin make the four day journey to Minas Tirith, Merry goes with Aragorn and

  • 11:27

Theoden first to Helm’s Deep, then to Dunharrow.

  • 11:30

It is during his day at Helm’s Deep that Merry is moved to offer his service to King

  • 11:36

    Theoden.

  • 11:37

    (March 6).

  • 11:38

After arriving in Minas Tirith on March 9, Pippin would make a pledge of his own, swearing

  • 11:42

himself to Denethor’s service in payment of his debt to Boromir.

  • 11:46

In his first act of service, Denethor orders Pippin to tell him all about his journey,

  • 11:52

    especially concerning Boromir.

  • 11:54

Despite Pippin’s attempt at keeping the ring, Frodo, and Aragorn secret, he could

  • 11:59

not fully hide all these from Denethor - for Denethor was both wise and perceptive.

  • 12:05

Meanwhile, in Rohan, Merry joins the muster of the Rohirrim, but is told by Theoden when

  • 12:11

they stop at Edoras that the time has come for him to stay behind - for he cannot keep

  • 12:17

up on a pony and no rider can bear the extra weight to carry him.

  • 12:22

In this moment, Merry is taken by Dernhelm - a disguised Eowyn - and they make their

  • 12:27

way to Gondor on March 11.

  • 12:30

During their travels, the Rohirrim in their company - including their leader Elfhelm - ignored

  • 12:36

Merry’s presence - allowing him to proceed toward battle.

  • 12:40

As the Rohirrim ride south, Minas Tirith prepares for war.

  • 12:44

Pippin is taught the lesser passwords and takes his place as a guard of the citadel.

  • 12:49

In his training, he becomes friends with another guard - Beregond and his son Bergil.

  • 12:56

The people of Gondor are amazed by this halfling.

  • 12:59

Soon, Pippin is referred to as “Ernil i Pheriannath” “Prince of the Halflings”

  • 13:03

and wild rumors spread that he had pledged 5,000 halfling to the defence of Minas Tirith.

  • 13:09

Merry and Pippin would each play significant roles in the Battle of Pelennor Fields.

  • 13:13

During the battle, Pippin would help save Faramir’s life, while Merry would save Eowyn’s.

  • 13:19

After Faramir returns to the city suffering under the Black Breath, Denethor turns to

  • 13:24

despair and attempts to burn himself and Faramir alive.

  • 13:29

Were it not for Pippin instructing Beregond to protect Faramir, he likely would have perished

  • 13:35

    while Pippin searched for Gandalf.

  • 13:37

Instead, Beregond kills three soldiers attempting to light the pyre and holds out until Gandalf

  • 13:43

and Pippin arrive, saving Faramir’s life.

  • 13:47

Meanwhile, on the Plains of Pelennor, the Witch-king mortally wounds Theoden.

  • 13:52

Eowyn reveals her true identity, standing between her uncle and the Lord of the Nazgul.

  • 13:58

As the Witch-king prepares to strike a fatal blow to Eowyn, Merry stabs him in his calf

  • 14:03

with the barrow-blade - the dagger of Westernesse forged to fight the Witch-king, making the

  • 14:09

Lord of the Nazgul vulnerable to attack.

  • 14:12

Eowyn strikes the Witch-king in the head, ending him once and for all.

  • 14:17

Eowyn collapses, falling under the Black Breath.

  • 14:21

Merry speaks to Theoden one last time as the king tells his esquire to think of him in

  • 14:26

days of peace as he sits with his pipe.

  • 14:30

Merry would soon also fall prey to the effects of the Black Breath, and would only be healed

  • 14:35

when Aragorn enters the houses of healing, where he calls Faramir, Eowyn and Merry back

  • 14:41

    from the darkness.

  • 14:43

Unlike the films, Merry remains behind in the Houses of Healing while Pippin travels

  • 14:48

with Aragorn and the others to the Black Gate.

  • 14:51

There, at the Battle of the Morannon, Pippin saves Beregond’s life by killing a troll

  • 14:57

    that had charged their ranks.

  • 14:59

The troll, however, falls on top of him.

  • 15:02

Pippin would be pinned under the troll until after the battle, when Gimli recognizes a

  • 15:07

hobbit foot sticking out from beneath the troll and pulls him out.

  • 15:11

In the coming weeks and months, the hobbits would celebrate the destruction of the ring

  • 15:16

and the massive victory over Sauron.

  • 15:18

They attend the coronation of King Elessar, his wedding to Arwen, and travel to Edoras

  • 15:24

    for the funeral of Theoden.

  • 15:26

After stops at Isengard, Rivendell, and Bree, they finally return to the Shire to find it

  • 15:33

    taken over by ruffians.

  • 15:35

Merry and Pippin, soldiers of Rohan and Gondor, lead the hobbits in attempting to retake the

  • 15:42

    Shire.

  • 15:43

Pippin travels to Tookland and brings back 100 hobbits to fight in the Battle of Bywater.

  • 15:49

During this same Battle, Merry uses a special horn of Rohan, gifted to him by Eomer and

  • 15:56

Eowyn, to summon the hobbits and rouse them to victory.

  • 16:00

After their home is retaken and Saruman and Wormtongue are slain, the hobbits would go

  • 16:04

on to play important roles in the future of the Shire.

  • 16:08

In year 4 FoA, Pippin marries Diamond of Long Cleeve and three years later, they have a

  • 16:14

son - who they name Faramir.

  • 16:16

Faramir Took would go on to marry Goldilocks Gamgee - the third daughter of Sam and Rose.

  • 16:24

Merry would marry Fatty Bolger’s sister, Estella and become the Master of Buckland,

  • 16:29

inheriting the role from his father.

  • 16:32

Merry would go on to write many academic works, such as Herblore of the Shire, Old Words and

  • 16:38

Names in the Shire, and The Reckoning of Years.

  • 16:42

In 13 FoA, Pippin becomes the Thain of the Shire - the leader of the Took clan.

  • 16:49

In this same year, Aragorn makes the roles of Master of Buckland, Thain of the Shire,

  • 16:54

and the Mayor of Michel Delving (which at this time is now Samwise) into official counselors

  • 17:00

    to the king.

  • 17:01

Two years later, Aragorn visits the northern realm and meets the hobbits at the Brandywine

  • 17:06

Bridge - following his own decree that none of the big folk should ever enter The Shire.

  • 17:13

In 31 FoA, King Elessar gifts the lands of the Westmarch officially to the hobbits of

  • 17:19

    The Shire.

  • 17:20

Pippin appoints Fastred, Sam’s son in law to be the first Warden of Westmarch.

  • 17:26

Decades later, in 63 FoA, Merry - now 102, and Pippin now 94, leave the Shire for the

  • 17:34

last time after Merry receives an invitation from King Eomer.

  • 17:39

They pass their roles as Thain of the Shire and Master of Buckland on to their sons and

  • 17:44

    travel to Edoras.

  • 17:46

That fall, Eomer would die at 93 years old.

  • 17:50

The friends then travel to Gondor, where they would live out their remaining days with Aragorn.

  • 17:55

At their passing, Merry and Pippin are laid to rest in Rath Dinen.

  • 17:59

When Aragorn dies nearly 60 years later, Merry and Pippin are placed beside their friend

  • 18:04

in their final resting place, among the Kings and Stewards of Gondor.
