  • 00:01

Hey, welcome to this June 4th edition of CNN STUDENT NEWS. I`m Carl Azuz. Thank you for

  • 00:17

watching our penultimate program of the 2014-2015 school year.

  • 00:22

We`re starting today in Boston, Massachusetts, where law enforcement officials shot and killed

  • 00:27

a terrorism suspect earlier this week.

  • 00:29

They`ve been monitoring Usaama Rahim for years. An official says the FBI noticed a change

  • 00:35

in his behavior recently. That prompted authorities to approach him outside of drugstores in Tuesday

  • 00:40

    morning.

  • 00:41

Investigators say Rahim was planning to randomly kill police officers. The FBI says it doesn`t

  • 00:47

think there`s any concern for public safety at this point. There has been another arrest

  • 00:51

    in the case.

  • 00:53

Today in Everett, Massachusetts, a man in custody, police making the arrest last night

  • 00:59

in connection with the fatal shooting of a terror suspect in Boston by police Tuesday

  • 01:05

    morning.

  • 01:06

It all began around 7:00 in the morning when the FBI and Boston police descended on this

  • 01:12

CVS, aiming to question the suspect, 26-year-old Usaama Rahim.

  • 01:18

Yes, we have a gentleman, black male, 6 feet, coming out now with a knife.

  • 01:24

Rahim had been under 24-hour surveillance by the Joint Terrorism Task Force, radicalized

  • 01:30

according to one official, by ISIS and other extremist influences.

  • 01:35

The FBI says Rahim made threats against police on social media.

  • 01:39

All right, there`s shots fired, unit shots fired.

  • 01:42

When officers approached him, Rahim lunged at them with this knife, authorities say,

  • 01:47

before a federal agent and Boston Police officer fired, hitting him in the torso and abdomen.

  • 01:53

The officers, again, gave several commands for him to drop the weapon. And unfortunately,

  • 01:59

he came at the officers and, you know, they did what they were trained to do. And, unfortunately,

  • 02:05

they had to take a life, and that`s never an easy decision for any officer to do.

  • 02:10

Rahim`s brother, an imam at a mosque in California, paints a different picture, saying on social

  • 02:16

media that his younger brother was on his cell phone with their father, waiting for

  • 02:21

the bus when he was confronted by police and shot in the back three times. He says his

  • 02:27

    brother`s last words were, "I can`t breathe!"

  • 02:31

The shooting is now under investigation, and Boston Police say they have a video documenting

  • 02:36

    the entire event.

  • 02:38

We saw the video. It appears that the law enforcement officers were backing away before

  • 02:42

    they exercised deadly force.

  • 02:45

Yesterday, police showed community leaders surveillance video of the shooting. Afterward,

  • 02:50

they said Rahim was not on the phone when he was shot and that he was not shot in the

  • 02:55

    back.

  • 02:56

Updating you now on political news: there are two new names on the list for the 2016

  • 03:01

    U.S. presidential race.

  • 03:03

Martin O`Malley launched his presidential campaign on May 30th. He`s the former governor

  • 03:07

of Maryland, former mayor of Baltimore and he`s seeking the nomination for the Democratic

  • 03:12

    Party.

  • 03:13

Lindsey Graham made his campaign official on June 1st. He`s a U.S. senator from South

  • 03:18

Carolina and he`s seeking the nomination for the Republican Party.

  • 03:21

So, the field is widening. There are now three Democrats who are officially candidates, nine

  • 03:27

Republicans are officially running. The primaries and caucuses will determine the one candidate

  • 03:32

from each major party who will be on the 2016 presidential ballot.

  • 03:40

Anyone who knows that capital of Ghana knows the location of the third school in today`s

  • 03:45

    call of the roll.

  • 03:46

We`re starting in the Palmetto State of South Carolina. It`s where the Knights are watching

  • 03:50

today at Stratford High School in Goose Creek.

  • 03:54

The Black Knights are also online in Point Pleasant, West Virginia. Shout- out to Point

  • 03:59

    Pleasant Junior/Senior High School.

  • 04:01

And in the Ghanaian capital of Accra. Hello to everyone watching at Lincoln Community

  • 04:06

    School representing West Africa.

  • 04:09

Sticking with the subject of geography. The Torres Strait is located between Papua New

  • 04:14

Guinea and Northeast Australia. There`s a fish that`s appeared there recently, an invasive

  • 04:19

species that authorities were hoping will never make it to the Australian mainland.

  • 04:25

    Walking fish in Australia.

  • 04:32

The "Climbing Perch" looks like a normal fish but has an unusual ability.

  • 04:36

They`re actually able to pull themselves out of the water hole and move themselves across

  • 04:40

land into the next water hole.

  • 04:50

They are eaten by larger fishes or birds that became large (INAUDIBLE) of those species,

  • 05:00

so that`s where the problem lies.

  • 05:33

When he was a student in India, Adarsh Alphons got in some serious trouble for doodling.

  • 05:38

But he kept on drawing and eventually found himself commissioned to do a painting for

  • 05:42

    Pope John Paul II.

  • 05:44

When he moved to New York, Alphons was trouble to find that almost 30 percent of public schools

  • 05:49

didn`t have a full time art teacher. So, he opened up free classes.

  • 05:57

Art has a power to let children discover who they are. Every child needs to have a space

  • 06:07

for them to create. When I moved to New York City, I noticed that access to our education

  • 06:17

was lacking. I decided we need to be the ones to put art in the hands of kids.

  • 06:23

We open our classes in public libraries that are near the schools that need us most.

  • 06:33

Our goal is not to create artists. Our goal is to let kids discover themselves.

  • 06:39

I use art as an escape. I do look forward to coming here every week, and on most occasions,

  • 06:49

I persuade them to let us stay longer.

  • 06:51

See how you can take it, right?

  • 06:52

After we bring art into their lives, they become more confident. The changes are quite

  • 06:56

remarkable. At the end of every semester, we showcase this student`s artwork in contemporary

  • 07:05

art galleries in New York`s art district.

  • 07:07

I tried to use water to make it darker and tuned for the weather.

  • 07:14

When I saw my artwork in a real gallery, I feel proud of myself.

  • 07:20

    That`s amazing.

  • 07:21

I hope it sets a spark that it`s OK to chase after your dreams, but you should go after

  • 07:30

it boldly and fearlessly, and that anything is possible.

  • 07:41

Number one movie at the U.S. box office right now was "San Andreas". It`s a disaster film

  • 07:46

starring a massive earthquake. It also stars the Rock, so that`s kind of a built-in fun.

  • 07:50

But exactly how realistic is this work of fiction.

  • 07:53

CNN`s Jeanne Moos spoke to a seismologist.

  • 07:57

A tsunami bearing down on a Golden Gate Bridge, skyscrapers collapsing.

  • 08:02

Can`t fault an earthquake blockbuster for going a little overboard.

  • 08:06

And before it falls through the cracks, CNN and the film studio are both owned by Time

  • 08:14

    Warner.

  • 08:15

How does a seismologist size up "San Andreas"?

  • 08:17

I would definitely give it two thumbs up. It had me on the edge of my seat.

  • 08:21

And the tsunami really had scientists rolling their eyes.

  • 08:25

    Oh, it`s way too big.

  • 08:28

It`s all a question of magnitude, 9.6, according to the movie. But the San Andreas Fault isn`t

  • 08:35

deep or long enough to generate that big of a quake. Two cities get hit.

  • 08:40

Could you lose both cities, San Francisco and L.A.?

  • 08:43

I think it`s highly, highly, highly unlikely.

  • 08:47

    Could the Hoover Dam collapse?

  • 08:49

No. I think the Hoover Dam is safe. You know, we all laughed at that scene and said, "There

  • 08:56

is water behind the Hoover Dam?"

  • 08:58

That`s a little dry humor about the drought.

  • 09:03

Seismologist Dr. Lucy Jones posed with the Rock at the premier and live- tweeted scientific

  • 09:09

    inaccuracies.

  • 09:10

When the Rock approaches the gaping fault like, Dr. Jones tweeted, "OMG! A chasm? If

  • 09:16

the fault could open up, there`d be no friction. With no friction, there`d be no earthquake."

  • 09:22

But there`s one thing the scientists love.

  • 09:29

The movie repeats the "duck, cover and hold on" mantra experts recommend.

  • 09:33

And if it makes people prepare, what is a little earthquake earthquakery.

  • 09:38

So, maybe there`s a little cinemagic here and there that seemed too special effective

  • 09:44

for seismologist who decides it didn`t size up. But as long as the science is deafening,

  • 09:49

it`s certainly something Hollywood approve of.

  • 09:52

I`m Carl Azuz. Keeping it real to real for CNN STUDENT NEWS.
