  • 00:01

Good morning its Melody Brooke again.

  • 00:03

Today I want to talk about respect, and the reason I want to talk about respect is that

  • 00:07

I have been all over the country this morning talking about a new survey thats out about

  • 00:10

how terrible it is that kids are not respecting their teachers, and teachers don't feel like

  • 00:18

kids are respecting them, and parents don't feel like the teachers are respecting them.

  • 00:22

So what is respect anyway? To begin with, its not doing what a person can and should do

  • 00:30

for themselves, which is part of where the problem starts is that often times parents

  • 00:36

are so concerned that their kids aren't going to love them or like them, that they feel

  • 00:41

like its their job to protect their kids from every upset, every disappointment, every failure,

  • 00:49

and to give them everything that they want.

  • 00:51

The problem with that is it prevents your child from being able to be self sufficient!

  • 00:57

It prevents them also from being able to have a center of control that is within themselves.

  • 01:01

So that they feel that they are capable of going out into the world and getting and doing

  • 01:06

for themselves and dealing with the failures, and dealing with the disappointments in a

  • 01:10

    positive way.

  • 01:11

We learn that as kids when we experience those things and then we have our parents there

  • 01:16

to help us sort out how manage that.

  • 01:19

And if we don't do that, and we are not being respectful of our kids, we are preventing

  • 01:22

them from growing into the self sufficient adults that they should grow into!

  • 01:27

So then what happens is they go to the school system, and they expect their teachers and

  • 01:30

the administration to treat them the same way, and of course they don't.

  • 01:34

And so then, they get angry and they run home and tell their parents, and their parents

  • 01:37

run in and try to intervene for them and what ends up happening is then the school system

  • 01:43

turns into the bad guy and of course the school system will escalate their attempts to power

  • 01:48

and control, and they will get disciplinarian and the teachers make the teachers out to

  • 01:53

be the bad guys and suddenly you are stuck in this cycle.

  • 01:57

And that's what I talk about in my book, how we we get stuck in that cycle so easily when

  • 02:03

we don't respect each other, we don't have empathy for each other, and we don't own what

  • 02:07

we are capable of doing, when we don't own our part in the situation.

  • 02:11

So understanding how that cycle works is really key to being able to be respectful and set

  • 02:16

up a system thats respectful, because the bottom line is its not only the responsibility

  • 02:21

of the parents, its also the responsibility of the school system to find a way to create

  • 02:26

a culture of respect, and empathy, and ownership, that starts at day one.

  • 02:33

And so when we can do this, it changes everything.

  • 02:35

Thats why the name of my books is Oh Wow this changes everything, you can find it on Amazon,

  • 02:41

and you can find it on Kindle and on Audible, and you can find out more about me at melodybrooke.com

  • 02:47

    Talk to you later, bye!
