Does your overhead a have your friends running for cover or rolling on the
court and laughter?
(what the hells was that?)
If you want to make it better I've got four key tips that will help you to hit better overheads. Stay Tuned
Hey everybody its CJ Johnson
Who doesn't want to hit a better overhead? After all somebody's given you
a shot maybe it's a meatball just sitting up there perfectly and you want
to put it away. But maybe it doesn't always happen for you.
Here are four things that you can do to help you to hit better overheads.
I'm here with my friend Jim we're gonna go through the 4 key things that are important
during an overhead. And Jim's a lefty so you're gonna get to see it from both
sides. So the very first thing we do we're here at the kitchen line we got a
great dinking game going or but now our opponents have now hit a lob over our
head and one of us has to go back for an overhead. So the very first thing we do
is we want to drop step backwards and at the same time bring our paddle up.
So go ahead Jim drop step backwards and you'll notice what happens are 2
things he drop steps back with his left foot. I drop step back with my right foot.
Both of our feet are parallel to the side of the court. Okay?
No foot going towards the front. Both feet our toes are parallel to side of
the court. What you'll also notice we both have brought our paddles back up.
You'll notice the paddle is kind of hanging back over our head. Almost touching the
back of my shoulder but my arm is up in the air. So that's step number one.
Step number two. Now what we're going to do is we're gonna spot the ball and I do that
by raising up my hand and trying to make my hand the spot for the ball.
Number 3 we are going to shuffle backwards. So as the ball is going over my head and
I've spotted it we are now shuffling back to
get into position. We never Jim you can stay here and show
the right position. We never ever want to go backwards like this. Okay? So we're
here. We drop step, bring the paddle up, spot the ball, we shuffle backwards.
Perfect. Now the actual motion we bring the paddle up with the leading edge of
the paddle going high. We're gonna make contact out in front of us. We snap the
wrist down as our body weight goes from our back foot forward to our front foot.
Let's go back up Jim and try that one more time.
We're here number one drop step, bring the paddle up making sure that both our
feet are turned completely parallel to the sidelines of the court. Number two
pick up the ball. Three shuffle backwards. Four as we bring our body weight forward
the leading edge comes up, the wrist snaps down and the arm just simply follows it.
If you follow those four key things you're gonna be hitting better overheads
in no time. Go out practice these things. In fact next week I'm going to come back
with one of the drills from Mark Renneson's book that has been really
helpful in making my overheads even better. If you don't mind, if you like

Maybe tell me how your overheads got better or even share it with your
pickleball playing friends. Cuz together we can
