  • 00:00

Cherry has been the landmark profile for high end custom keyboards since their inception.

  • 00:05

To many, it’s something thought of synonymously with GMK, and premium keycaps as a whole.

  • 00:11

But what if I told you there might be a strikingly competent alternative?

  • 00:14

This video is brought to you by flexispot.

  • 00:17

Flexispot makes high quality motorized desks among other ergonomic furniture.

  • 00:21

We personally use the comhar, which has plenty of useful features like USB A and C charging

  • 00:26

ports, the ability to save preset desk heights, and a slide out drawer to store items like

  • 00:30

    tools.

  • 00:31

Their standing desks also have plenty of customization, like changing the material, desktop color,

  • 00:37

height range, frame color, and casters, among many other configurable options to suit your

  • 00:42

    needs.

  • 00:44

Flexispot is hosting a photo contest, where you can submit photos of your flexispot desk

  • 00:48

setup to win select prizes like pegboards.

  • 00:57

Check the link in the description for more information.

  • 00:59

    This is DCX by drop.

  • 01:01

The best way I can sum it up is as if the quality and aesthetic of GMK had a baby with

  • 01:06

the accessibility and variety of MT3.

  • 01:10

    And also inherited the packaging.

  • 01:11

We have our standard 3 plastic trays.

  • 01:14

inside are thin sheets of bubble wrap.

  • 01:16

And that’s pretty much it, but it’s much more secure than GMK’s packaging at least.

  • 01:20

Like GMK, DCX is ABS plastic and is manufactured using the double shot process.

  • 01:25

And it’s important to mention this before I move forward: do not confuse DCX for a manufacturer.

  • 01:31

GMK is a manufacturer, and DCX is a profile.

  • 01:35

While the comparison is technically between Cherry and DCX, GMK is the most important

  • 01:40

comparison to directly make to Drop’s DCX keycaps, since they’re one of the most common

  • 01:45

cherry keycaps in the custom world and stack up in terms of pricing.

  • 01:49

With that cleared up we can start spotting the other similarities.

  • 01:52

    For one, the concavity.

  • 01:54

Each cherry key has a small dip towards the center when you look at it from the bottom

  • 01:58

    or top.

  • 01:59

And the shape of this dip on DCX looks the same.

  • 02:01

Overall, the differences between the profiles themselves are very very minute, and different

  • 02:06

    for each row.

  • 02:08

For example, row 2 is ever so slightly steeper, and row 3 is a little bit shorter.

  • 02:13

But none of the profile changes really differentiates DCX from cherry, as when you’re typing,

  • 02:17

the changes are pretty much unnoticeable.

  • 02:19

Another interesting thing I picked up on is that even though DCX is manufactured the same

  • 02:23

way, it doesn’t have the same nick on the back of every GMK keycap.

  • 02:27

This is a huge bonus, as I have seen the ‘GMK nick’ as a huge turnoff for a lot of potential

  • 02:33

buyers in our GMK red vs blue samurai comparison.

  • 02:36

I am happy to say that the nick is not on DCX.

  • 02:39

In terms of textures, while they may look the same on camera, DCX feels much smoother

  • 02:43

and, I might even say, “grippier”, than GMK.

  • 02:47

keycap texture is a very hard thing to describe, and most of the time you really just have

  • 02:51

to try it out for yourself to see what you like and what you don’t.

  • 02:54

The thing you can see on camera, though, is that DCX is glossier than unshined GMK.

  • 02:59

Another plus side is that, at least from my testing, DCX doesn’t have north facing interference.

  • 03:04

    At all.

  • 03:05

You are free to use all your favorite non long pole switches on any north facing board,

  • 03:10

and still enjoy the same feel and sound of typing on cherry keycaps.

  • 03:13

    This is huge to me.

  • 03:15

A massive gripe with GMK is lead times.

  • 03:18

Right now with supply chain issues and other problems in Germany, GMK sets are seeing insane

  • 03:24

lead times, up to 2 or more years.

  • 03:27

And this has made many turn to other options.

  • 03:29

DCX is in-stock, unlike most GMK sets usage of the group buy system.

  • 03:35

And with drop being such a large company, they’re going to be able to keep these keycaps

  • 03:39

    very consistently in stock.

  • 03:41

It also looks like DCX has pretty extensive kitting, so board support isn’t going to

  • 03:45

    be an issue.

  • 03:46

Now that we’ve gotten physical comparisons aside, we need to talk about possibly the

  • 03:51

    most important factor.

  • 04:31

    Sound.

  • 05:10

    How do they compare?

  • 07:48

Ignoring differences in press force and other factors, DCX and GMK are really similar.

  • 07:54

On the PE foamed QK65, there’s literally no difference in the alphas.

  • 07:59

    As expected with PE foam.

  • 08:01

The GMK spacebar is slightly higher pitched and sharper.

  • 08:05

With tenet, GMK also seemed to be a bit sharper and harsh sounding, while DCX was more rounded

  • 08:10

    out.

  • 08:11

But they both still had the same pitch.

  • 08:13

Of course, CRP is lower pitched than both because it’s PBT instead of ABS.

  • 08:18

GMK also seems just barely duller sounding than DCX.

  • 08:22

With glacier, there was barely an audible difference, but again, GMK seemed to be slightly

  • 08:28

    sharper.

  • 08:29

But overall, the sound is mostly the same.

  • 08:31

    How about material quality?

  • 08:33

Well, it’s great, to be expected from a large company with a lot of keycap experience.

  • 08:39

Legends are sharp, of course, because of double shot.

  • 08:42

The mod font is a tiny bit wonky, but only if you look up close.

  • 08:46

The alphas are consistent, with the legends being in the right spot on every keycap.

  • 08:51

Compared to GMK, the font on DCX is quite a bit thinner.

  • 08:54

And I’m also very happy to say that the mods are all perfectly straight.

  • 08:58

No banana spacebars like with GMK.

  • 09:01

With how relatively young DCX is, there are definitely things I simply can’t comment

  • 09:05

on right now, like color matching, quality control, and how novelties would look.

  • 09:10

But in the near future, as more content gets put out and drop puts out more colorways,

  • 09:15

we will be able to know about these aspects very soon.

  • 09:18

But before we talk about whether you should look into buying DCX, I am obligated to talk

  • 09:22

about the controversy surrounding DCX or should I say, MT2, and the designers drop works with.

  • 09:30

Drop is not known for treating their designers well.

  • 09:33

Most large companies that decide to dip their toes into our community aren’t exactly seen

  • 09:37

    as saints anyway.

  • 09:38

We’ve heard of bad miscommunications with Matt3o, Drop doing things like MT2 without

  • 09:43

their permission, and a whole slew of controversy surrounding Mito.

  • 09:48

While this technically doesn’t affect the products and their quality, I think it’s

  • 09:51

important to be mindful of the places your products are coming from, and being aware

  • 09:56

that this is a company that has not been known to be particularly respectful to designers.

  • 10:01

But if you ask me, I think DCX as a product is a smarter choice than GMK, especially when

  • 10:06

    drop starts releasing more colorways.

  • 10:08

It’s higher quality in more aspects than one, easy to buy, sounds almost the same,

  • 10:14

and doesn’t take a lifetime to ship.

  • 10:15

But at the end of the day, these are both pretty expensive keycaps, and there’s no

  • 10:19

doubt that there are high quality options out there that also compare to both of these

  • 10:24

    in terms of value.

  • 10:25

But if DCX hits the plenty of checkboxes that it does for what you want in your new plastic

  • 10:30

    squares, it’s a great choice.
