J.J Abrams and son Spider-Man comic issue 2.

This comic makes me feel like I’ve been dropped into a parallel universe and it has

absolutely nothing to do with the comic itself but rather with how it’s being talked about.

If you’ve ever felt completely disconnected from the cultural zeitgesit hit that like

button and now for the recap.

For if you missed our review of part one which as always how dare, and of course card and

link for the full experience but for those who truly have no time.

With a full warning that spoilers are ahead let’s do this.

After coverbaiting readers with MJ and spider-man on the cover MJ dies dies in quotation marks

on on page 7 killed by the mysterious villain cadaverous.

LEaving behind Peter and her supposedly surprise but not at all if you’ve ever read any fanfic

or even earlier elseworlds stories child Ben Parker.

Peter is so devastated he abandons his son with Aunt May and goes off to be a big time

photographer with a hook hand.

His on ben grows up to have anger issues and a chip on his shoulder but he beats up bullies

so no one is going to address his lack of anger management.

He meets an edgy cool teen girl named Ito Faye but really Faye Ito it;s just everybody

says her last name first.

At the end of issue one he learns his dad was Spider-Man dun dun and as for the villain

cadaverous he was cryptic and ate a hot dog.

Issue 2 Go.

The cover is standard Spidey fighting cadaverous nothing to write home about but at least I’m

not concerned about MJ plunging to her death.

We start with cadaverous being cryptic and vague his favourite thing.

Incappable of waiiiting as coruption spreads with noo keeey we are stuck.

He’s looking for the key totally not a maguffin this is a tantalizing plot device how dare

you.

He needs it to heaal.

He said it like that so I’m just being accurate.

Ben’s not taking the knowledge that his father is spider-man well at all stating that

he still won’t forgive him Why do you keep defending him All of this because of what

he did Mom died on that bridge Because of him!

Nolw this isn’t against ben that is perfectly acceptable child logic and probably how peter

feels sinc ehe blames himself for everything anyway but real talk there are two people

responsible for MJs death well 3.

Cadaverous doing it and MJ for running onto a bridge mid combat despite being married

to spider-man for a number of years you know who the third is.

Ben is at school pondering whether his mom knew his dad was spider-man so I guess that

talk he had with May was surface at best when he is accosted by Faye Ito who is full in

on this whole name trend Ben Parker.

She’s super into how he beat up that bully cause he did it for the “right” reasons

she’s so into it she needs to hangout with him after school and gets his address.

I think she should have yelled Gary Stu and not Ben Parker.

I’m sorry it’s hard to live in the shade it’s so cold here.

Ben decides to burn his dad’s spider suit but has instant regret when Faye shows up

dressed in what is clearly an I’m up to no god getup which Aunt May is fine with.

I’m starting to think May knew that Peter was spider-man the whole time and just didn’t

care.

So Faye tells ben they’ve got to dress up and she’s dressed as the marker which I

read about 3 times as Maker and then realized no it’s marker which good cause that would

have been a really inaccurate maker outfit.

Needs a waaay bigger helmet.

Aunt May is here to help Ben out giving him another of Peter’s spider-man outfits that

she had so ben can out with Faye.

So where are they going an expression that Dora the explorer had ruined for me I can’t

say it without feeling the pavolvian urge to clap.

Where are we going *claps* Well it’s to graffit buildings about how they’re not

paying their workers health insurance.

She’s sooo bad.

But the word she’s spray painting is predator which alone is kind of confusing but enough

about that time for some totally cool and revolutionary rephrasing of spider-man’s

ethos.

I’m telling you dude you don’t have great responsibility because you have great power...your

hero got it the other way around.

These suits tell us anyone can be a hero...The Marker spray painting vaguely related graffit

that other people are going to have to clean up true heroism.

They’re just doing this out on the street at the front of the building so shock of shocks

the police show up Nut Faye’s not here for that what a rebel she starts running and Ben

is like this is my chance so this spidey suit is fully functional he webs away and despite

never doing it before is great even while carrying another person….sigh

The panel of them ascending is fun.

Also he just tells her his dad was spider-man and then slams into a sign.

You don’t know she could be a plant she is bizarrely enthusiastic about hanging out

with some kid she met in detention for five minutes who stared at her like he wanted to

eat her face.

I know I just unloaded a lot.

It’s new to me too and weird and I didn’t mean to freak you out but umm you ok.

So ignore what they’re saying a minute and focus in the remember the great departed sign

in the back with black widow captain america hulk and thor on it all in their mcu forms

btw except black widow has longer hair.

So they’re dead this is supposed to be little easter egg world building but for me it’s

peter’s hook all over again.

K so when did this happen> how recently for the sign to be up is the anniversary does

it have to do with cadaverous or anything in this universe.

I was going to leave all the review stuff to the end but I’ve seen reviews prasiing

this panel specifically going only the Abrams would be brave enough to kill the avengers.

Ok look it’s only a cool world building detail if it matters which it might but we

don’t know if it will yet so the praise real early.

I feel like people are just looking for anything to praise with this book.

And I hear it now you’re just hater why is your heart so jelly and full of hate.

It’s not I just want this book to be judged like any other praised and called out when

it should be.

Anyway all of this got filmed so Peter sees it on his war torn photography travel session

of guilt and so does Cadaverous I kneeew it wouuld coooome back eventually my childen

to heal tooo unloock.

Brrring us the keeey.

So Faye convinced Ben that he should well be spider-man and thankfully there’s a catastrophe

an explosion at oscorp so it’s his time now.

Also Faye says this is who we are….um step off you do graffiti and he’s about to go

save people don’t live vicariously through him.

Not the same thing.

Faye is using Ben to up her self esteem this can only end badly run ben run.

I mean what a wonderful supportive friend I’m so glad he has such wholesome encouragement.

Yes I’m a bitter cynic and as always there are multiple ways to read things.

Ben proceeds to forget how human’s talk.

Hello fellow citizen Just gonna casually and heroically lift this rubble for ya cause that’s

who I am.

And the guy he’s saving only encourages him Spider-man?

Not sure actually.

Well that’s confusing you lifted rubble heroically….

Ummm in what world let’s try this again.

Spider Man where am I what happened oh god there was so much smoke where are Jim and

Karen are they ok you have to go back for them.

Peter then starts talking about how his costume means that anyone can be a hero he thinks.

Henry Abrams gave an interview before anything was published that we touched on in an earlier

video where he said that the more you read spider-man the less you understood him and

I do get the vibe that he is confused as to what makes spider-man special like people

are dying under this rubble

and this whole scene is sooo disconnected.

Cadaverous’ goons attack information that will probably be relevant in a later issue

like was it a trap how are they tied to oscorp are there any hot dogs there.

You don’t seem very good at this I’m trying my bes...ackk Try harder please.

There’s still time to put him back ben no one will know.

Peter pulls a fixture down which shouldn’t stop any of these cadaverous bots but does

or at lest he assumes it does cause he drops the guy off probably cause he won’t stop

with his meta dialogue.

My friend always said you’re probably just some deadbeat loser now.

With like a beard or something missing.

A missing arm or leg or some lame kid...Wow your friend sounds mean and I would know also

ha ha ha.

Classic spider-man swinging away into the distance...I just who talks like that I’m

just going to chalk it up to his head injury also hold up there was only one guy in all

that rubble cause Ben is gone he clocked out he rides the bus home.

Unless it’s a plot point and that guy is a cadaverous plant there’s no way there

was only one person, and no way those robots aren’t still rampaging.

You can’t make me buy into this whole what a triumphant first time out this was a disaster

I expect the headline the next day to be hundreds dead spider-man saves one man then leaves.

When he gets home Peter is there to say Hi Spider-Man.

This comic was fine it’s fun and has it’s high points but it also has a lot of flaws

and never ascends around average.

It’s not pushing the medium or story telling or spider-man story telling it’s definitely

not revolutionary or brave to tell a look a next generation kid fic au.

Which has already been done in spider-man canon more than once.

I’m not being harsh them’s true facts.

If you’ve been in fandom at all you’ve read this story more than once and potentially

better, you’ve read this type of story in comics a hundred times over the years and

seen it i other media.

It’s not original is what I’m saying, but ok is it enjoyable.

being.

And how no one seems to want to question it and that’s largely because of who wrote

it and the reasons it exists.

Let’s just say if this comic were a chess piece it would be a pawn.

And here’s the biggest thing and this isn’t a bad thing but just needs to be acknowledged

this feels like a first attempt some of the dialogue is chopy more designed to be said

with a sassy delivery than read an aloud witicism that oft times falls flat when reading it.

The pacing is also a bit rushed even compared with the first issue and there are many contrivances

like ben ima dramatically burn my costume in the backyard oh no faye is dressed up thank

god may had another costume...Now to be spdier-man cause with great power comes the ability to

impress the girls you like.

So yeah you can tell it’s not as experienced a work or at least not as tight as other comics.

But it gets it’s general point across which is more of a feeling.

Resentment over peter and his abandonment the desire to be something to do something

to be a hero.

This book wants to convey sentiments and it does.

Mileage will vary how deep it penetrates.I like I’ve given up Peter and Ben’s anger

rings genuine I’m looking forward to more of the father son interaction.

I’m glad i read this and it is different from what else is out there in marvel now

simply by virtue of being an alternate universe mini more free to do it’s own thing.
