  • 00:00

As someone who has reviewed a crapload of microphones over the years, I’ve always

  • 00:04

been super interested in the audio hardware used to create ASMR content.

  • 00:12

One of the main, “face of ASMR”, mics is this one right here: The 3Dio Free Space

  • 00:18

    binaural microphone.

  • 00:20

I was super stoked to get to check it out for myself - and while most of it I won’t

  • 00:25

share publicly, it’s been a lot of fun messing around trying to create my own ASMR triggers

  • 00:31

and play with the audio channels.

  • 00:45

The first thing you will notice about the microphone is its striking appearance.

  • 00:49

The Primo EM172 microphone capsules are embedded into soft silicone ears designed to look and

  • 00:55

    act like real human ears.

  • 00:58

This contributes to the overall ability of the Free Space to pick up sound naturally

  • 01:02

as a human would actually hear it.

  • 01:05

3Dio has a few different models available, with better microphones on the higher-priced

  • 01:09

    ones and XLR output options.

  • 01:11

This base model just has a standard 3.5mm output jack, a bass roll-off switch, and a

  • 01:17

    power switch.

  • 01:18

The mic is powered by a 9-volt battery inside - though they appear to have made it difficult

  • 01:23

    to replace for some reason.

  • 01:25

And actually, overall, I find this whole product to have a… strange design situation.

  • 01:32

In my unboxing, I noted that the audio cable itself was just thrown in the shipping box

  • 01:36

and was not present in the actual product box.

  • 01:39

Plus, the cable itself is only a couple inches long - which, combined with the weird placement

  • 01:45

of the audio jack and completely inflexible mounting options, can make it difficult to

  • 01:53

    connect to a recorder.

  • 01:54

You can use your own longer audio cable, of course, but it just seems weird.

  • 01:58

The bottom of the microphone box features a standard microphone stand mount.

  • 02:01

But you can’t change it, you can’t mount if from the top, or do… anything…

  • 02:05

with it, without rigging something custom yourself.

  • 02:09

I just feel like this kind of setup should be more flexible or adaptable.

  • 02:57

Especially since - while intimate ASMR settings are a great use for this mic and all - a really

  • 03:02

awesome use case for this mic would be getting audio out in nature or in big groups of people,

  • 03:07

and situations like that with a mobile rig really need more mounting options.

  • 03:12

Running and gunning with the mic would be much less noisy if it was mounted from the

  • 03:16

    top.

  • 03:17

It is small and lightweight, though.

  • 03:19

    But how does it sound?

  • 03:20

    You’re hearing it now.

  • 03:22

As a vocal microphone, it’s kind of thin.

  • 03:24

Using the bass roll-off switch helps avoid unpleasant sounds to the ears, but further

  • 03:28

loses any coloration to the sound.

  • 03:33

This is great for real-world, bigger-picture soundscapes, but for normal talking levels

  • 03:38

it can require some processing to truly sound “natural”, to me at least.

  • 03:42

The binaural effect is pretty good.

  • 03:44

For one-on-one stuff like this, you’re not going to notice the separation effect anywhere

  • 03:48

near as much unless you get right up on top of it.

  • 03:53

    It’s amazing for bigger-picture real-world sounds, however.

  • 03:56

The key factor here is the mic’s ability to remain low-noise so you can bring up whispers

  • 04:01

and soft sounds without a noise floor.

  • 04:24

There’s still some light hiss to this mic with most recorders I’ve used, but it’s

  • 04:48

much better than what you’d get trying to just strap two cheaper mics side by side or

  • 04:52

using the Blue Yeti’s stereo mode for this.

  • 04:54

I imagine the XLR model has even less self noise.

  • 04:58

The 3Dio Free Space binaural microphone provides an entry point into the binaural or 3D audio

  • 05:03

space that doesn’t break the bank anywhere near as much as their higher-tier models or

  • 05:07

other products I’ve seen, but still provides a competent setup.

  • 05:11

I just wish the chassis itself had more mounting options and was a bit more flexible in nature.
