Hey I'm Thomas and I'm Sheena and we're Chasing a Plate, tonight we're in Kuala

  • 00:04

Lumpur and we're exploring Jalan Peel which is a well-known food street

  • 00:10

and there's a tonne of amazing street food we can see satay, we can see

  • 00:15

chicken wings, we can see rice, noodles there's a tonne of stuff to chow down on. Let's eat!

  • 00:26

We have nabbed a table and we're going for our first round of eats so we've got

  • 00:31

satay, we've got chicken wings and we've also

  • 00:34

ordered a Cantonese Mee Hoon. This satay looks absolutely mouth-watering

  • 00:41

the guy has been turning those satay on on the grill, fanning those flames and

  • 00:48

the wafts of smoke have just filled the air and I mean we ordered beef and we ordered chicken

  • 00:55

we've got a pot of peanut sauce here and I am just going to go for it and dunk this

  • 01:00

    bad boy in

  • 01:14

so this is the beef satay and it is so tender but there's a beautiful ratio of

  • 01:25

meat to fat on there so the meat melts in your mouth

  • 01:29

and then the fat just bursts and gives you that charcoal-y flavour

  • 01:34

that peanut sauce is a little bit sweet but there's just a tiny

  • 01:40

gentle hint of chilli so a small hint of spice that coats your mouth.

  • 01:46

That is so good, what I also love is that there's fresh cucumber and fresh red onion so that

  • 01:55

totally cleans the palate so I'm going to dunk that in a bit of that sauce and

  • 01:59

go for that as well. Mmmmmm

  • 02:04

so fresh start. Satay is one of those things like when someone says Malaysian food. I think of

  • 02:12

satay straight away and that is amazing

  • 02:16

We've also got chicken wings. Now I am like a massive chicken wing fan. I'll eat them

  • 02:24

anyway they come. These have been grilled, they look like they've been

  • 02:29

basted with some sort of sauce we've also been given a bit of chilli to dip it

  • 02:35

in but I'm just gonna go for it naked and see what it's like

  • 02:43

mmm there's like a honey marinade on that, it's so juicy, the skin is nicely charred and

  • 02:51

meat's really tender, like I could snack on these all night long.

  • 02:56

So I'm going to try the chicken satay it was such a show he was putting on

  • 02:59

like Sheena said I got so much b-roll so sorry if there's a million overlays of

  • 03:03

that guy just fanning those flames and giving it heaps it was so exciting to watch

  • 03:08

look at this chargrilled piece of chicken it looks like there's a whole lot of fat

  • 03:14

in there, there's some chicken skin interlaced with the chicken pieces

  • 03:17

which is really cool I'm just going to give it a huge dunk in the satay sauce

  • 03:21

so that's like a little bit of chilli, peanuts

  • 03:32

it's really good chicken because the fat has been completely separated from each

  • 03:38

piece so you get a piece of meat that's completely meaty it's got a

  • 03:43

little crispy bit from being charred but then you've got the fat because that's put in there

  • 03:48

separately the skin and so then you get the juicy fat layer which is even more

  • 03:53

charred because obviously the fat has taken on that grill and just the flavor

  • 03:58

in that it's absolutely stunning and the sauce is incredible

  • 04:03

it's a tiny bit spicy, really peanutty, it's a great texture it's quite quite thick

  • 04:10

that is absolutely beautiful now we also have this mee hoon which is a noodle dish

  • 04:17

so mee means noodle it's got pork, prawns some greens I think choi sum and then a

  • 04:27

really thick gravy with it so let's just dive in and try some. To be honest we

  • 04:34

kind of got this dish because we wanted the greens we just needed a little bit of

  • 04:37

green on the table so let's try

  • 04:42

I didn't really get any that time I'm gonna have to try again

  • 04:49

that's nice, an egg has been cracked through it also it's quite plain

  • 04:55

tasting it definitely feels like a dish that we got just because of the veggies

  • 04:59

it's not blow your mind like these satay and I can't wait to try those chicken

  • 05:04

wings because they look ace this is just a good meal I'm not going to go on too

  • 05:10

much it's not that exciting let's get back into the exciting food. I'm washing it

  • 05:15

all down with a freshly squeezed sugarcane juice so the sugarcane is rolled through

  • 05:20

these massive heavy rollers and the juice is pressed out of it that way

  • 05:26

it's really sweet and it's very refreshing in this heat. This food has

  • 05:31

been absolutely epic and I just love this style of eating it's my favourite

  • 05:36

sitting on the street with the traffic roaring past, just on a little stool, people

  • 05:43

talking, locals coming, just popping by to grab a bite to eat for dinner. It's like my

  • 05:50

favourite bit about Asia. Like Sheena was just talking about how she loves this

  • 05:55

type of dining so do i and when you're in Malaysia if you're a tourist looking

  • 05:59

to visit Malaysia or to KL or if you have been but you're coming back

  • 06:03

everyone knows Jalan Alor that is the most famous street food street in KL but

  • 06:10

there are so many other and better options like places like this. For starters

  • 06:16

it's going to be next to no money compared to Jalan Alor because Jalan Alor is

  • 06:20

very expensive and Jalan Alor is like the Disneyland of street food it's

  • 06:26

packed with tourists but you can find these types of places so Jalan Peel where we are

  • 06:31

which full of food options, full of locals, it's such a nice place to eat

  • 06:37

let's try these chicken wings Oh

  • 06:43

so tender I got some chilli sauce on there as well, it's really sweet it's got a little like

  • 06:49

sour tang and then a good little kick is just coming in now but nothing

  • 06:54

too major. The chicken just slips off the bone, the skin is

  • 06:59

all slippery and silky oh my gosh

  • 07:06

everyone has been ordering nasi lemak so we had to go and get a plate too

  • 07:12

this place is really heating up, if you know of any other food streets that we

  • 07:17

should check out whilst we're in KL please let us know in the comments below

  • 07:21

and while you're down there we would love you to subscribe if you're enjoying our food and

  • 07:25

travel videos. Nasi lemak is basically Malaysia's national dish and

  • 07:31

it is made up of coconut rice, sambal, which is the chlili sauce, slices of

  • 07:38

cucumber, boiled egg, ikan bilis which are fried anchovies and also roasted peanuts I

  • 07:45

have added ayam rendang which is like a curry chicken and have also gone

  • 07:53

completely off piste I know that a nasi lemak should not traditionally have these

  • 07:59

two salads so I've added a bean sprout salad and a chopped bean salad but I just

  • 08:04

couldn't resist because they just looked so good so please forgive this

  • 08:09

untraditional version of nasi lemak that I have in front of me but

  • 08:14

boy does this look good I'm just gonna try a bit of the rice and a bit of the

  • 08:22

sambal with some ikan bilis and also some peanuts

  • 08:34

I could eat nasi lemak all day long, it is just a really comforting dish all the

  • 08:43

elements on the plate work together so well, that sambal has got a bit of a

  • 08:48

fiery kick to it, the anchovies are really, really crunchy.

  • 08:54

    That was a great

  • 08:56

stack of savouries, super fun love this eating on the street

  • 09:00

I reckon we need some sweet stuff to finish up. It's time to find dessert I'm

  • 09:04

gonna go get some. Sheena's picked up some Chinese dessert so soup basically but

  • 09:09

sweet soup, there's an iced one and a hot one I've got the iced one in front of me I'm

  • 09:14

going to give it a go it's full of bits and bobs so it's going to be really interesting to see

  • 09:19

what's in here. It's got a really sort of a light brown colour

  • 09:26

it's really sweet like almost some sort of cane-y sort of sugary sweet really

  • 09:35

prominent but in a really nice way you can actually taste the sugar it's not just

  • 09:38

a sweetness it's got quite a caramel-y, burnt flavour going on

  • 09:43

which is really nice. I'll try and find... I got a little pink thing, what's that...

  • 09:51

just some sort of pink jelly, it's all full I think there's longans so some fruit in here

  • 09:57

as well. Mmmm so fresh longan ooo that's got a real burst of flavour that's

  • 10:06

awesome I then there's like these really like jelly like noodles I for the life of me I

  • 10:12

don't know what those are. They don't actually have much flavour but they're a

  • 10:15

really cool texture each mouthful I'm taking I'm getting all these weird

  • 10:19

little noodles, this is an awesome way to finish because it's really refreshing

  • 10:25

because it's cold, the sweetness like I said it's not just a huge kick of sweetness

  • 10:30

like a chocolate bar or something it's really got flavour in that sugar, that's super tasty

  • 10:36

I'm gonna get Sheena to try the hot one and see what she thinks. This really is a bowl filled

  • 10:41

with treats so I can see longan in mine as well, there's barley and I think she

  • 10:49

said that there was white fungus in there

  • 10:56

Like Thomas said it's very sweet but it does have a real beautiful mellow

  • 11:03

caramelized flavour, great texture with the white fungus it's really crunchy and

  • 11:10

I'm going to try a longan

  • 11:16

wow that's a real burst of freshness you can really taste that fruit that is really

  • 11:24

really good. It's really interesting I've just switched and I now have the hot one

  • 11:27

and on my first bite now these are the same dish so that one is on ice this one

  • 11:33

is out of a hot hot pot but it's exactly the same thing this now tastes

  • 11:39

very spicy it's got a lot of flavour going on whereas that just doesn't at

  • 11:45

all it just tastes more like that beautiful sugar and it's just to me it's

  • 11:48

like having an apple out of the fridge or an apple out of a fruit bowl the one

  • 11:52

out of the fruit bowl is going to be really floral and interesting whereas

  • 11:55

the one out of the fridge is going to be crisp, crunchy and really refreshing it's a

  • 12:00

really cool difference. I prefer the hot I feel like it just has a lot more flavour the

  • 12:05

cold one now after having it after the hot one just feels almost bland. I

  • 12:10

prefer the cold ah perfect! Swap ya!!

  • 12:18

We are done and we cannot

  • 12:20

recommend enough doing that if you're a tourist

  • 12:23

definitely track down if it's this one so Jalan Peel so there's multiple

  • 12:29

places like this but we really loved this place it was really good but like we

  • 12:33

said earlier step outside Jalan Alor, see something different, the experience

  • 12:38

is fantastic and your wallet will be very happy you did so and any locals

  • 12:43

let us know down below where's your favorite place like this

  • 12:46

where we can sit on the street get a range of stuff and just really enjoy these

  • 12:50

balmy evenings. If you liked this video we would love you to give it a thumbs up we

  • 12:55

hope we've inspired you eat and explore like a traveler, not a tourist we'll

  • 12:59
