all right so i have no idea what to expect here corn pudding huh so you can see yeah

cinnamon on top i mean looks like it's going to be good let's see

today we are going to eat for all you foodies out there this is probably the video you've

been waiting for we are still in santa domingo we are hanging out in the colonial zone today

so we're going to be concentrating on this area and we're very hungry so this area of

sancho domingo has some amazing restaurants high and in the middle mainly more expensive

i would say but lots of different types of food some really beautiful restaurants as

well but the goal of today is going to be more to concentrate on dominican and caribbean

style foods so we have come over to a place called mix empanadas i really don't think

there's a better way to start off a caribbean food video but the kind of the best latin

american food you can get empanadas are so delicious we actually had another place in

mind but i think maybe they've closed due to the pandemic or if they move locations

that didn't update their google maps because we could not find it anywhere this place has

a really good rating and it's really cool inside and hopefully the food is just as good

here we go check out these bad boys we got two different kinds and they're actually quite

large but this one is avocado and pico de gallo and this one is ham tomatoes and queso

so they're empanadas i'm gonna go for this guy because i picked it up first so avocado

pico de gallo and an empanada i've not tried that ever in my life

oh it's absolutely perfect it's what you can imagine you have the softness of the avocado

on the inside then the pico de gallo just gives it a really really nice flavor and these

guys are just really crispy on the outside again i can't believe the size for the price

it's a really good deal

i get why these are so popular down here i could probably eat them every single day there

are many things i love about being back in a tropical location but one of my many favorite

things is that you can get fresh juice pretty much anywhere we went with mango today it's

so good so fresh anyway i'm gonna try the other empanada so this one is tomato cheese

and ham also one thing we didn't talk about yet is they come with all these sauces so

they have garlic that's hot and this one is medium hot i believe so i might try this one

i think just to be safe maybe not too much just in case

messy messy messy goodness so it's definitely juicy definitely messy the outside is really

nice and crisp but it's like super soft on the inside the thing i noticed right away

is the tomato it's like a very very tomatoey flavor reminds me a little bit of almost like

a calzone or something like that probably because of you know you get tomatoes the cheese

it's got like a little bit of a pizza flavoring going on the hot sauce is a little bit hot

but nothing too crazy i might actually try super hot sauce next time just to give it

a little bit more heat but it's quite delicious all right round one check complete that was

delicious what a start to the video so good if the rest of the day can be just as good

as that it's gonna be a really great day

all right we came over to another place here and this is very local they don't take us

dollars it looks like a typical at what i imagine to be a typical diner here in the

dominican you can see we have two different kinds of food this is a croquette the polio

a chicken croquette and this is a pastelito something we've not had before it's also poem

so i think what i'm going to do is go for the croquette here first now usually i think

when we have croquettes they're always in the shape of a ball and you'll notice right

away it's more fried food so fried food seems to king down here there's a lot of fried food

in the caribbean in general we were in puerto rico at one point we had lots of fried food

but let's just go for this guy oh yeah look at the color it's really nice

so inside here this is chicken but there's also like base chamel and some other secret

components they make up this kind of gooeyness it's really great on the outside it's kind

of breaded and dusted a little bit it's really good i like it it's very basic flavor there's

no heat so smoky or anything like that but it is delicious totally understand that food

is so popular down here i just love the look of this place i am going to try this pastelito

i don't know if you've ever had this before but maybe in other places it's called something

different it's very it's uh very pastry-like on the outside look at that on the inside

wow that's lovely that looks really not at all what i expected i thought it would look

more like what the inside of the uh of this guy looks like but that it's sort of similar

but it's a different color but the texture the texture is a little different

wow

much better than i thought it was gonna be just looking at it sitting on a plate it looks

honestly pretty boring but on the inside it's quite flavorful quite salty i would say i

wonder if there's cheese in there like a salted cheese or something like that because it's

got way more flavor on the outside it's not hard so you would think like with the um for

the empanada you know it's more more hard on the other side it's quite soft and flaky

next up we are changing directions a little bit from smaller deep fried appetizer type

things to dessert the place we're going to we actually have had evening drinks a couple

of times since we've been in the city it's a gorgeous location but we also noticed they

have some pretty epic looking desserts it's pretty cool because you can see the courtyard

over there where we're going to be but what is this structure really super old church

in our last video we were doing a bit of a tour of this uh this area of the city in case

you haven't watched it we went and visited lots of old stuff there's loads of old churches

and buildings in this area but yeah it's pretty amazing so the sweetness has arrived to our

table totally different direction this time for some dominican desserts we got two things

here one is flan you're not sure what that is i've had it i don't know if i've actually

ever had it before but i looked it up online it's the same basically the same thing as

creme caramel so it's a custard style dessert and secondly we got

latte

hopefully we're saying that correctly it is a corn pudding also something i've definitely

never tried before i think there's some cinnamon on top looks delicious mmm the question is

the question is is it delicious let's try this beautiful flan first look at that custard

oh like caramel

a little wobble to it

people that have watched this for a long time probably know that i am very much a um chocolate

person when it comes to the dessert the rare time we have dessert none of us really eat

dessert that often but usually i go for a chocolate dessert but i always really end

up enjoying desserts like this so it does if you you've never tried flan it's very similar

to um creme brulee that kind of thing it's got that like kind of sweet custardy flavor

to it and then the caramel over the top is quite delicious it's very very very sweet

but still really good all right so i have no idea what to expect here corn pudding huh

so you can see yeah cinnamon on top i mean looks like it's gonna be good let's see

oh it's nice actually i don't think i've ever had

like a homemade pudding like this before the cinnamon on top gives it a really nice flavor

and i would say it's like hints of corn you don't overly taste that corn so it's kind

of mild but with the cinnamon it is good we asked them here like what is the most common

or typical um dominican dessert treat and they all said this one we have to try this

right away i'd be very curious to try some others while we're in the country here we're

here for a long time so we'll be trying all kinds of desserts but it's good look at the

inside of that i like it i feel like it could be wrong but it almost has like a butterscotch

flavor as well but it's good definitely good very excited to try anna's as well though

i feel like we're spoiling ourselves today with two different kinds of desserts and all

the food we had previously

so as you can see it's a little later now we're back up on el conde the main pedestrian

walkway we're going to be looking for some more food but one thing to note it is saturday

night and there's a lot of people out this is the most people we've seen on the street

so far so we're really hoping we can get into the restaurant i wonder if this is what it

feels like in high season when there's like lots of tourists here and it's not a pandemic

because there's so many people out we've been here a few days as we film this and it hasn't

looked like this in the last few days that's for sure all right do you guys remember earlier

in the video when i was talking about how there's some really interesting unique looking

restaurants here in this part of the city well we tried a couple of them and they were

really loud which for making a video is so difficult we happened to come across this

one they do kind of like i guess dominican food but with a twist in a really really beautiful

environment take a look at what i have in front of me here this is a mafungo now we've

only had a fungo once in puerto rico but it's a very popular dish here in the dominican

look you can see my fork just for scale in this guy there is some pork belly there is

like a passion fruit sauce crazy passion food sauce there's also some cerveza in here as

well so look how big i can't get over the size of this look if i hold it up i mean this

is a monster thankfully we are sharing all of this but i guess we'll just dive in there's

also some other like white and kind of like a red sauce in here i this is going to be

adventure the menu is all in spanish so we had a little bit of a hard time trying to

figure out what's what but this is what we went with well here we go i'm just gonna go

for a bit of everything here got a big old honking bite

oh that is savory and full of flavor just kind of hits you right in the middle one thing

i left out is there's plantains in here as well that's one of the key ingredients in

the whole dish this pork is so so delicious pork is one of my favorite we have it once

cooked like this pork belly you can't beat it whatever's in this sauce you guys i wish

i knew what the secret was we did say passion food back oh it's absolutely absurdly delicious

i can't wait for anna to try this one i'm gonna try one more hunk of pork here look

at that guy it's ridiculous this is absolutely ridiculous probably the best meal of the day

so far my favorite for sure all right for my dish i went for a chicken dish i think

it was called something like chicken in orange or orange chicken or something along those

lines again we had a really really difficult time deciphering this menu but the things

that we could put together sounded really really good i had no idea what it was going

to look like or anything but it's basically like half a chicken looks like it's baked

there is some salad around it and then it came with this other casserole looking thing

i did figure out on the menu there was some there was some eggplant mentioned there was

a banana mentioned and there was also grated cheese or gratino cheese or something like

that so i don't know if it's like a scallopy potatoey eggplant dish over here but that'll

be interesting to get into and we'll call it maybe it's a mystery dish yeah i'm excited

to try that one but maybe we should try the chicken first because it is the uh the main

event oh look at that it's quite the generous size that just falls right apart wow one thing

i feel bad for you guys is that you cannot smell what is happening here on our table

because it smells amazing definitely the best smells of the day

the chicken is delicious it really does just fall right apart it's cooked perfectly perfectly

i don't know how they do it like this like it just literally falls off the bone i think

it does have a slight orange flavor so i'm very curious if they like cooked it in oranges

or some orange sauce but it's very very very subtle let's try this mystery concoction ooh

it's very very very thick

i thought this was going to be very like potato like it is potato like a thick thick potato

like some sort of potato or a yucca or one of those things that you don't find maybe

sweet potato who knows wow whoa hot it's warm i can taste that eggplant right away it's

super smoky how do how do places get an uh like aubergine or eggplant to taste so so

smoky i don't know if there's a certain way that you cook it where that flavor really

really comes out but it's like super prominent that's the first thing i taste right away

it's very thick i actually do think i see banana in there as well so this is some sort

of some sort of um eggplant banana and something else to make it thick like it is wow well

that was an awesome day of delicious dominican food we've been waiting to do that for a while

look at these guys it's loud on the streets today guys

not america we're not american but we love you too it's okay but yeah guys today was
