  • 00:02

    (Half-Bell)

  • 00:06

    (Bell)

  • 00:34

    (FRENCH)

  • 02:28

(Sr Pine) Our friend has found Thay's teaching on death very comforting.

  • 02:35

About 18 years ago he went on a retreat in the Tibetan tradition

  • 02:41

that also had the theme of "Death".

  • 02:45

The teacher spoke in a lot of detail on how to transfer consciousness

  • 02:51

at the point of death, but also on what happens after death.

  • 02:56

The teacher spoke on some detail about the different hells that exist,

  • 03:02

those that are cooler and hotter,

  • 03:04

and certain images that are present in those hells.

  • 03:08

One of the images was that of a hungry ghost,

  • 03:13

that we may in such a hell be born

  • 03:16

as someone who has a throat that is too small

  • 03:20

and that we are very hungry but we somehow cannot receive the food

  • 03:24

to go into our body and nourish us.

  • 03:28

There were also some other images that he mentioned.

  • 03:32

    Our friend's question is

  • 03:35

are these images offered to help us...

  • 03:44

    [searching into her notes]

  • 03:51

    wake up, [laughter]

  • 03:56

as some kind of tool to help us live

  • 03:59

more meaningfully and appropriately in this life,

  • 04:03

    more beautifully in this life,

  • 04:05

or do these images actually speak of a true reality.

  • 04:11

In connection to that can we speak

  • 04:16

of hells that are present on earth at this very moment,

  • 04:19

are these metaphors for experiences that we have during life,

  • 04:22

or are they only something for after death.

  • 04:29

There were a few more questions but I wonder if that is enough...

  • 04:32

    [LAUGHTER]

  • 04:37

This is a question about the connection

  • 04:40

between sleep without dream and stored conciousness.

  • 04:50

According to the form of the question

  • 04:56

we know that the one who asked the question

  • 05:01

he already has the answer. [LAUGHTER]

  • 05:12

The way he asked the question shows that he already has the answer.

  • 05:16

    Don't you agree?

  • 05:23

But that is also a chance for us

  • 05:27

to look and to see that the teaching of the Buddha can help many people.

  • 05:39

Not only the people who have high intellectual capacity,

  • 05:47

but also the people who do not have good education.

  • 05:53

The teaching of the Buddha helps everyone.

  • 05:57

There is the kind of Buddhism for the vast majority,

  • 06:10

there is a deep Buddhism for only a minority.

  • 06:17

These teachings may "contradict" each other as far as form is concerned.

  • 06:26

That is why it is said,

  • 06:30

in Buddhism there are 84000 Dharma doors,

  • 06:44

and many kinds of teachings, and many kinds of practices.

  • 06:51

There are those who are afraid of punishment.

  • 06:57

If they are afraid of retribution,

  • 07:05

    they behave better,

  • 07:08

because they are afraid of retribution.

  • 07:14

That is why to talk to them of hell,

  • 07:18

hot, cool, cold hell and so on,

  • 07:22

that may happen, as a kind of "threat" .

  • 07:28

"If you behave like that, you suffer like so."

  • 07:33

In many Temples we see drawings of hell,

  • 07:37

    as a kind of warning:

  • 07:39

"If you don't practice the five precepts,

  • 07:41

    you will suffer like that,

  • 07:45

you will be boiled in hot oil or something like that.

  • 07:51

"If you lie, when you go to the hell, they will take your tongue

  • 07:56

    and cut it your tongue"

  • 07:58

    (audience laughs)

  • 08:02

That may help many people also,

  • 08:06

but it does not help some other people.

  • 08:09

    That is popular Buddhism.

  • 08:14

We know that the vast majority believes in rebirth, in reincarnation,

  • 08:25

    but their belief comes from

  • 08:29

their wrong view in a self, that there is a self, there is a soul,

  • 08:35

that is distinct from the body,

  • 08:38

and when the body is gone,

  • 08:41

    the soul always survives,

  • 08:45

seeks to penetrate another body, and continue.

  • 08:49

That is a kind of belief on rebirth, and that is a teaching on rebirth,

  • 08:59

but it is not truly the deep teaching of the Buddha,

  • 09:06

because it is based on the wrong view of the self.

  • 09:11

Anything, any teaching that goes against

  • 09:15

the insight of impermanence, no self, and Nirvana cannot

  • 09:24

be described as the deepest teachings.

  • 09:28

    Whether you are thinking of cause and effect, rebirth, retribution;

  • 09:39

if your teaching, if your practice does not reflect the insight of impermanence,

  • 09:47

no-self, and Nirvana, that is not truly the teaching of the Buddha.

  • 09:54

So there are many things that have

  • 09:59

come from the teachings of the Vedas, the Upanishads.

  • 10:07

We know that before the Buddha there was already the belief,

  • 10:12

in reincarnation, and in retribution; that is not invented by the Buddha.

  • 10:21

The teaching of retribution, reincarnation existed before the coming of the Buddha.

  • 10:31

But these teachings are based upon the existence of a self.

  • 10:40

The Buddha although he teaches the continuation, life after life,

  • 10:46

his teaching is based on the insight of no self,

  • 10:52

impermanence, and finally, nirvana, no birth and no death.

  • 11:03

That kind of belief, which is not purely Buddhist,

  • 11:09

    can also help.

  • 11:15

There are those who believe that the pureland of Amitabha Buddha

  • 11:20

is not here, but in the direction of the west,

  • 11:26

and you get there only after you die.

  • 11:32

There are those who also have a better, a different view,

  • 11:40

We know that the true pure land is in the here and the now,

  • 11:45

and there is no time to be in the west, or in the east.

  • 11:50

    When your mind is pure,

  • 11:52

then the land is pure also, at the same time.

  • 11:57

That goes more in the direction of right view.

  • 12:05

The spirit of Buddhism is that of tolerance.

  • 12:11

There are those who cannot understand deep Buddhism.

  • 12:16

We have to allow them to embrace a form of Buddhism that is more diluted,

  • 12:26

like medicine with some sugar in it.

  • 12:32

    They help.

  • 12:35

So we are not criticizing them because their teaching, their belief,

  • 12:40

does not go perfectly with the Ultimate Truth.

  • 12:47

    Because we have compassion,

  • 12:52

because we have understanding, then compassion is possible.

  • 12:57

The real true Buddhist is always tolerant, not a fanatic.

  • 13:06

If you are skillful, you can lead them slowly,

  • 13:10

so that they gradually abandon their wrong view,

  • 13:14

and get a better and better view all the time.

  • 13:21

That may apply to all of us.

  • 13:26

In the beginning we have had an idea about the Three Jewels,

  • 13:30

    Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha.

  • 13:34

    After ten years of practice,

  • 13:36

you have a better view of

  • 13:37

    Buddha, Dharma and Sangha,

  • 13:39

and after fifty years, we have a deeper understanding of

  • 13:43

    Buddha, Dharma and Sangha,

  • 13:45

so according to that we learn the lesson of tolerance.

  • 13:51

We should not think that our view is the best.

  • 13:58

    We are making progress,

  • 14:05

we are ready to abandon our present view,

  • 14:09

in order to get a better view.

  • 14:11

That is the practice of non-attachment to view.

  • 14:16

In Buddhism if you have that insight,

  • 14:20

you will be very tolerant and you accept other forms of Buddhism

  • 14:26

    You don't criticize.

  • 14:29

Only you can help people to have, a better view and a better practice.

  • 14:34

That is why there should not be, conflict and war between Buddhist schools.

  • 14:42

    There has been the reality.

  • 14:45

There are so many schools in Buddhism,

  • 14:46

but they never organized any holy war, in order to fight each other.

  • 14:53

We should be able to keep that tradition of tolerance.

  • 14:58

Tolerance, not because you are forced to be tolerant,

  • 15:01

but because you have Right View, that is why your heart is open,

  • 15:07

that is why you can tolerate those,

  • 15:10

who do not have the same kind of view as yours.

  • 15:14

You should try with loving speech, and deep listening,

  • 15:19

to help him or her to abandon their view,

  • 15:23

that may still have fanaticism or things like that in it.

  • 15:36

Here we learn that the present moment

  • 15:42

is not something that can exist independently,

  • 15:48

from the past or the future.

  • 15:53

    You cannot cut and separate,

  • 15:57

    the past, present and future.

  • 16:00

The three times, past, present and future,

  • 16:03

    they inter-are.

  • 16:06

In any one of them, you see the other two.

  • 16:11

That is why if you touch the present moment deeply,

  • 16:14

you touch the past, and you touch the future.

  • 16:21

The past is still available, and the future is only available.

  • 16:30

That is the insight you get,

  • 16:34

when you meditate on the nature, of the inter-being of time.
