  • 00:06

The markets are falling but the manufacturers of soaps and various kinds

  • 00:12

of sanitizing substances I think are doing quite well. Why is that? Of course

  • 00:19

because of the onset of the coronavirus, which could become a pandemic.

  • 00:25

What can we do for now? Well, the best advice is to keep washing our hands,

  • 00:31

make sure that we don't touch too many surfaces

  • 00:33

and hope that everything is going to come out okay.

  • 00:38

But as is very often the case when some event like this happens,

  • 00:44

the pseudoscience mongers get into the picture and start with their stories and

  • 00:49

conspiracy theories. So let's stick to the facts. What do we know?

  • 00:55

We know that the virus somehow emerged from Wuhan in China

  • 01:00

it probably came from some sort of animal

  • 01:03

possibly bat droppings, contaminated wild animals sold in a store

  • 01:08

at least that's the theory, and there's some evidence for that

  • 01:14

although not everyone thinks that was ground zero but it certainly could have been.

  • 01:20

There are stories going around about how Wuhan actually

  • 01:25

housed some kind of biological facility where they were testing out viruses for warfare.

  • 01:31

    There's zero evidence for that.

  • 01:35

Then there is the story of eating bats

  • 01:39

and there's even a video going around of someone eating a bat suggesting that

  • 01:44

this is what started it all. That video is actually old and it wasn't taken in China.

  • 01:49

It was taken on some Pacific island where they actually do

  • 01:53

sometimes eat bats but this has nothing to do with the current outbreak.

  • 01:57

And then of course there are all of the potential treatments

  • 02:02

and all of these are are quackery.

  • 02:05

Nobody right now has any kind of treatment for this virus.

  • 02:08

Of course they're e working feverishly to try to find a vaccine

  • 02:11

but that's going to be a long time

  • 02:13

at least a year a year until anything crops up.

  • 02:17

But there are people out there who are telling us that what you have to do is take sesame

  • 02:21

oil, mix it with ground-up garlic and ascorbic acid or vitamin C and that this

  • 02:28

is the cure for for the coronavirus.

  • 02:32

Incidentally, the reason it's called coronavirus is because

  • 02:34

when you look under microscope it kind of looks like it has a crown.

  • 02:38

A virus is just basically some protein and some genetic material.

  • 02:43

We don't really talk about killing a virus because the virus isn't alive.

  • 02:47

It has to infect a cell and it uses the cell's machinery to replicate itself.

  • 02:53

However, it can be washed away from from the hands and it is

  • 02:57

    susceptible to some disinfectants.

  • 03:00

Certainly bleach, a dilute solution of bleach, can inactivate the virus.

  • 03:06

Hydrogen peroxide can inactivate the virus.

  • 03:09

You may have seen trucks going around in China spraying

  • 03:12

I suspect they are spraying a dilute solution of bleach or hydrogen peroxide

  • 03:17

But then there is the quack item known as miracle mineral solution

  • 03:23

this is all over internet now supposing it's the treatment for the coronavirus.

  • 03:30

It's a bleach called chlorine dioxide and you actually make it by mixing

  • 03:36

together two chemicals. Sodium chloride and citric acid can be

  • 03:40

mixed together to make this. Now miracle mineral solution has been around for a

  • 03:45

while with claims of curing every disease that you have heard of

  • 03:49

and now of course they are jumping on this particular bandwagon

  • 03:54

and saying that this is the cure.

  • 03:57

There's absolutely no evidence for it.

  • 03:59

There's no reason to think that swallowing this will do any good whatsoever.

  • 04:03

    This is nonsense.

  • 04:05

Now what about the masks? People are wearing surgical masks like doctors have.

  • 04:10

They don't do much good because air can get in, air can get out

  • 04:16

There is some value in masks, though, especially this kind.

  • 04:21

This is called the N-95 mask because it keeps out particles which are very very small

  • 04:30

and they're generally referred to by microns and 95 refers to that.

  • 04:37

It is not the most comfortable thing when you put it on

  • 04:43

but it's okay and it provides a very good seal

  • 04:49

so that nothing comes out and nothing goes in.

  • 04:52

I don't even know if my sound is coming out now

  • 04:55

    But you can wear this

  • 04:58

and if you are infected it will certainly keep you from coughing any kind of sputum

  • 05:07

and also protects you from inhaling anything from the air

  • 05:11

because it turns out that tiny little particles in the air

  • 05:14

particles of moisture can harbour the organism.

  • 05:18

So anyway, that's what we know for now.

  • 05:20

The N-95 mask is the one that that works.

  • 05:24

    Surgical masks are less effective.

  • 05:28

But at this point all we can hope is that the virus will kind of

  • 05:33

peter out as the spring rolls around as we saw with SARS and with MERS

  • 05:39

But it's also possible that it will develop into a full-scale pandemic.

  • 05:44

Obviously let's hope that doesn't happen

  • 05:48

And for now let's just keep washing our hands as often as we can

  • 05:52

and stay away from large crowds.
