Hi everybody, its Mari with dell technologies thank you for joining us

  • 00:03

another video as we continue to explore the power and functionality we get by

  • 00:08

integrating in the Dell client command suite with SCCM. In this video we're

  • 00:13

gonna go over a new feature with SCCM 1806. Microsoft has released the ability

  • 00:18

for us to enable third-party updates directly in SCCM, what that means for us

  • 00:24

is that we now have the ability to natively support Dell BIOS drivers and

  • 00:30

firmware revisions within SCCM. Let's just take one second to talk about the

  • 00:35

efficiency that we can gain from that simple change. Right now enterprise's

  • 00:40

already have a monthly patch cycle in place or maybe a quarterly back cycle in

  • 00:44

place to roll out patch updates from Microsoft.

  • 00:47

We Dell from an enterprise standpoint have a very good handle on all of the

  • 00:52

different drivers, bios and farmer revisions that are out in the

  • 00:55

environment. In today's cybersecurity stage that can become a security problem,

  • 01:01

you know we're constantly giving notification saying hey we need to go

  • 01:05

update virus revision a or we need to upgrade driver release B to make sure

  • 01:09

that we're protected against a new threat. With this integration of SCCM 1806

  • 01:14

and the Dell client commands sweet we

  • 01:16

now as IT administrators have a single process to update all of our Dell

  • 01:22

specific updates and microsoft specific updates using the same exact process so

  • 01:28

that being said let's go ahead and get into it. As you can see I already have

  • 01:32

secm open and if I come into administration updates and servicing you

  • 01:37

will see that I'm already running SCCM 1806 and on the feature sets you will

  • 01:43

already see that we've enabled third-party update support on clients, if

  • 01:47

your third-party support is not enabled all you have to do is just right click

  • 01:51

and select turn on now that we verify that it is enabled let's go ahead and

  • 01:55

make the right setting changes we need so that SCCM knows we want to roll out

  • 01:59

third-party updates. The first thing we need to do is configure our software

  • 02:03

update point so to do that over here in administration we're going to go into

  • 02:08

site configuration, sites we're going to right click our primary site and scroll

  • 02:13

down to configure site components software update point. Okay once that's

  • 02:20

done we're gonna select third-party updates and here we're going to enable

  • 02:24

our third-party software updates feature. Now if anyone remembers back in the day

  • 02:28

with scope you actually had to create a certificate the clients used to validate

  • 02:33

that your third-party updates were signed correctly, one of the cool

  • 02:37

features that Microsoft did with this is actually let SCCM implyin manage its own

  • 02:40

certificates so selecting this radio button and selecting okay. Will enable

  • 02:46

the software update point to roll out third-party software updates and it will

  • 02:51

get us as IT administrators out of the game of having to manage another

  • 02:55

certificate okay. Now that the software update point has

  • 02:58

been configured we need to make one more change this time to the client settings

  • 03:02

so while in the administration tab we're gonna scroll down into client settings

  • 03:06

and we're gonna edit our default client settings, once that's open we're gonna

  • 03:12

scroll down to software updates and if we drop the box down you'll see down

  • 03:17

here that we now have the option enable third-party software updates we're gonna

  • 03:22

go ahead and select yes and okay and with those setting changes SCCM is now

  • 03:28

ready to support third-party updates so now let's go into software library

  • 03:33

software updates and you're gonna see I'll just show you in my all software

  • 03:38

updates I already have seeped down the normal microsoft is that we've already

  • 03:42

deploying right but if I come down a little further to third-party software

  • 03:47

update catalogs you're gonna see that the Dell catalog is here. All we've got

  • 03:52

to do is right-click and say subscribe to catalog. Once it's open you'll see

  • 03:56

here that we're downloading the cat file from dell.com and we get a little

  • 04:01

description here stating that it's supporting system driver BIOS firmware

  • 04:05

and software updates for Dell business clients. So once we verify that that's

  • 04:10

all good we're gonna go ahead and select next, okay it'll download the catalog

  • 04:17

once downloaded and select next again. So before I can actually subscribe to it I

  • 04:22

do need to approve that the Dell certificate is valid so to do that I'm

  • 04:26

gonna go ahead forget okay it was issued to Dell by

  • 04:30

Symantec that looks good to me so I'll go ahead and select okay and check the

  • 04:35

box and select next. Okay once I select it next you see here that I have my

  • 04:41

confirmation settings this looks good to me so I select next again. Okay it's been

  • 04:47

completed successfully and I have now been subscribed to the Dell client

  • 04:50

catalog so I'll go ahead and select close. Now that I've subscribed to it

  • 04:55

let's go ahead and seek down the Dell catalog to SCCM so to do that we're

  • 04:59

gonna right click and select sync now. So here we're gonna get confirmation if we

  • 05:05

want to sync the catalog down we're gonna select yes and let that sync. So to

  • 05:10

manage it and to kind of watch it and see where it's going let's go to open up

  • 05:14

the right log file so in file explorer we're gonna browse to our install

  • 05:18

directory of SCCM in this environment it's on c program files microsoft

  • 05:24

configuration manager we're gonna go into logs and we're gonna search for the

  • 05:29

IS Vlog perfect. Let's go ahead and open up the SMS underscore ISV updates

  • 05:38

underscore seek agent log and here you can see that it's starting to download

  • 05:44

all of the metadata for the updates published to the dell cloud so why don't

  • 05:49

we go ahead we're gonna pause the video while the rest of the data is

  • 05:51

downloading and we'll be back in a little bit. Okay we're back so as you can

  • 05:56

see the metadata has seeped down to our SCCM server and again all things in the

  • 06:00

SCCM you're always going to see a little yellow and a little red so I really

  • 06:04

wouldn't worry for this error message what I'm getting out of this is 4240

  • 06:08

updates or seek successfully. So I'm gonna have to close that closed file

  • 06:12

explorer and at this part we now need to go in and configure the software update

  • 06:16

point to synchronize the Dell products into a SCCM so to do that we're going to

  • 06:21

go back into administration, we're going to go into sites and, we're gonna edit

  • 06:28

the software update point by right-clicking our test site going into

  • 06:32

configure site components software update point. When the software update

  • 06:37

point component properties dialog box opens up, we need to go into products and we are

  • 06:43

gonna enable all of the Dell BIOS drivers application and form where

  • 06:47

products in disk up so let's go ahead and select ok, once that's done let's go

  • 06:53

ahead and sync SCCM software updates so to do that we'll go back over to

  • 06:57

software library. This time we're gonna go into all software updates and we're

  • 07:02

gonna select synchronize software updates. Here we're gonna get prompted to

  • 07:07

verify we want to synchronize the updates we'll say yes so just like last

  • 07:12

time we're gonna open up the write log file so we can watch the synchronization

  • 07:15

happen so we're gonna open up file explorer, go back to our install

  • 07:19

directory which in this environment is C-Program Files-Microsoft

  • 07:24

configuration manager. When you go into logs and this time we're gonna open up

  • 07:29

the W sync manager log at the very bottom. Now we're gonna sit watch this

  • 07:34

log but what you'll see here now it's going to go ahead and seat down all of

  • 07:37

the Dell updates into SCCM so we're gonna go ahead and pause the video again

  • 07:41

and we'll be back when the synchronization is completed.

  • 07:45

Okay the synchronization is done so as you can see here in the logs we see that

  • 07:49

it's done its Dink synchronization completed and we get the message here in

  • 07:53

the log this has done synchronizing SMS with WSO server. So now let's go ahead

  • 07:58

and close out and here in SCCM we're just gonna click out and back in to the

  • 08:03

all software updates so it updates the view. Once the view updates you see the

  • 08:09

lot of software updates now so to filter out just the Dell updates we're gonna

  • 08:13

come in to add criteria scroll down to vendor and say vendor is

  • 08:19

Dell and search again. Now that we filtered it down you can see just the

  • 08:24

Dell updates that are in the software updates catalog one thing that I do want

  • 08:28

to call that if you notice all of them are showing up as unknown the reason

  • 08:33

they're showing up as unknown is because we need to deploy the open manage client

  • 08:38

to our Dell systems before they can report back into SCCM and know what

  • 08:43

software updates are needed. So to find that we're going to come up here to

  • 08:46

search and we're gonna type it open manage.

  • 08:52

Once the search is done you're gonna see the dell openmanage inventory agent for

  • 08:56

dell business client systems this is the agent that we have to deploy out first

  • 09:00

before we can deploy software updates so to do that let's right-click and select

  • 09:04

publish third-party software update content, we'll go ahead and select ok

  • 09:10

again and just like last time let's open the log up to watch it so back in our

  • 09:15

logs directory we're gonna go to the ISV updates log. All right now you can see

  • 09:22

here in the log that it actually completed and downloaded the content

  • 09:25

successfully so the next step is to go back into SCCM and manually kick off

  • 09:30

another update synchronization so to do that we'll go back into SCCM let's close

  • 09:36

out of this for a second and we're gonna select synchronize software updates

  • 09:40

again. Here we say yes and just like last time let's go back and open up the

  • 09:47

W sync manager log and just like we did after our first in ization let's watch

  • 09:55

the log and wait until everything's been synchronized. Ok the synchronization is

  • 10:00

done so here you see now that it's synchronized the update Dell Openmanage

  • 10:05

inventory agent back into SCCM so now that's done if we come back into

  • 10:11

SCCM and here in software updates we're gonna search for the open manage client.

  • 10:19

As you can see the icon for the open manager inventory agent has become green

  • 10:22

that green icon means that the data is downloaded and it's actually ready to be

  • 10:27

deployed so all we have to do now is right-click the inventory agent and

  • 10:32

deploy, once that a point was it opens let's go ahead and change the deployment

  • 10:37

name so we'll say Dell open manage inventory agent, we'll browse and deploy

  • 10:48

it to our desktop collection. Well select next again here we'll go

  • 10:54

ahead and say that it's a available update just so that we can actually see

  • 10:58

it in software Center and actually control the install go ahead and next

  • 11:02

again we'll say soon as possible. We'll say display in

  • 11:07

software Center go I just leave the defaults here next again hey over create

  • 11:13

a new deployment package so let's go ahead and give it a name we'll called

  • 11:16

the open manage inventory agent, here we'll store the data on our SCCM server.

  • 11:33

We'll go ahead and say next, well automatically distribute the package out

  • 11:40

to our DP. Well select our distribution point and select ok, let's go ahead and

  • 11:46

select next. Now here's where we specified the source location for the

  • 11:51

software update that you need to download, I know it sounds a little weird

  • 11:54

but you want to leave this on download software updates from the internet as he

  • 11:58

seems gonna realize that the contents already been downloaded and then not

  • 12:01

trying to download it again. So let's go ahead select next again we'll leave our

  • 12:06

defaults, we'll leave the defaults and finish.

  • 12:12

At this point as you see mistaking the Dell Openmanage inventory agent that we downloaded, packaging it up

  • 12:19

and deploying it out. As you can see it's done so let's go ahead and select close.

  • 12:25

With the update deployed it's time to test so let's head over to assets and

  • 12:28

compliance devices and find one of the workstations we deployed the updates you.

  • 12:34

We're now going to connect remotely by right-clicking going to start-remote

  • 12:39

control and logging in remotely. Once we get in we're going to update the

  • 12:45

workstation policies and verify that the open manage inventory agent installs

  • 12:49

successfully. Let's go ahead and launch the Start menu well actually let's go

  • 12:54

ahead and drag this down a little bit first we can see it there we go it's

  • 12:58

going to. Launch the Start menu and then we'll go into control panel, once into

  • 13:03

control panel will open up system and security and scroll down to

  • 13:07

    configuration manager.

  • 13:12

Once there we'll head up the actions tab and we will run a machine policy

  • 13:16

retrieval and evaluation cycle. At this point the workstations gonna check back

  • 13:21

in to SCCM and see if there's any new machine policies for it should also see

  • 13:25

that the new updates earlier and we go ahead and actually open up the log see

  • 13:31

windows SCCM logs and open up the policy agent log and you can see now that it's

  • 13:42

actually getting new policies as we speak. So now that that is done let's go

  • 13:48

ahead and run the software updates scan cycle this will have the workstation

  • 13:52

check-in against the Windows Update and SCCM to see there's any new updates.

  • 13:57

Ok just like last time we go back to the log directory and this time we open up

  • 14:01

the updates deployment scan and we see that there is a software update

  • 14:09

available now for the Dell OpenManage interviewer agent. Now let's run a

  • 14:14

deployment evaluation cycle and at this point we should be getting the

  • 14:22

evaluation for one assignment that is there so let's go into Software Center

  • 14:25

now and see if the patch is there.

  • 14:33

perfect software Center loaded if you come into updates you see that we have

  • 14:36

the dell openmanage inventory agent let's go ahead and say install. Ok as you

  • 14:43

can see the agent is installed it verified that the installation is

  • 14:47

complete and then just to make real sure let's go ahead and open up absent

  • 14:50

features. And here in the installed apps and features list we see the

  • 14:57

Dell Openmanage inventory agent for Dell business client systems. Now that is

  • 15:02

done let's go ahead and close out.

  • 15:11

and restart the workstation. On boot the service will load and populate WMI with

  • 15:17

the necessary information and then immediately close so just to verify that

  • 15:21

the information is populated into WMI successfully after the install I went

  • 15:25

ahead and restarted the workstation. Now that the workstation is back online

  • 15:29

let's come up to file connect and type in the workstation name and perfect or

  • 15:39

log back in again. The Openmanage agent has now been installed and the

  • 15:44

workstation has rebooted at this point the Dell inventory agent has populated

  • 15:50

WMI with all of the information needed for the updates to work so at this point

  • 15:55

all we need to do is go into control panel and kick off an update skin.

  • 15:59

So let's go back into control panel again

  • 16:04

system and security will scroll down into configuration manager hope the

  • 16:13

actions tab and this time we're gonna go back and run an a software updates scan

  • 16:18

cycle again right now perfect and just like last time we're gonna open up the

  • 16:25

right lock so we can see so back in file explorer we'll browse to

  • 16:28

see windows SCCM logs. Alright once it's open we're going to we're gonna scroll

  • 16:38

    down to update handler.

  • 16:46

Okay it was done let's go ahead and send in a software deployment evaluation

  • 16:52

cycle as well and now that information has been put into the SCCM database could

  • 17:00

we come back into software library and we're back in the software updates the

  • 17:07

information is now in SCCM saying what Dell updates are needed by that system

  • 17:12

unfortunately we won't see it here these numbers like required installed do not

  • 17:16

update until the data is summarized to summarize it we're gonna click up top

  • 17:20

and click run a summarization. Here we're gonna select okay so the software

  • 17:27

everyday compliance status runs and just like last time let's go ahead and get

  • 17:31

back into the correct log so in file explorer we're to go back to our SCCM

  • 17:36

install directory on this workstation in this environment that's at c program

  • 17:44

files microsoft configuration manager we're gonna go into logs state system

  • 17:51

    dot log.

  • 18:01

Okay here you can see that the update the status summarizer started and was

  • 18:08

already completed so since it's done let's go back into SCCM that's right

  • 18:14

click and have five to update our view and now the view should be updated so if

  • 18:20

we want to see the updates that are required for environment we use come in

  • 18:23

to add criteria say required and do all updates that were required that do not

  • 18:32

equal zero and search. Now you can see that we came back and show that this

  • 18:39

workstation not only needs Microsoft updates but also needs these Dell system

  • 18:44

driver updates and Dell BIOS provision as well. I hope everyone enjoyed the

  • 18:48

video and is comfortable with with implementing this in your own

  • 18:51

environment just to recap we went through with SCCM 1806 and enable

  • 18:58

third-party update support once that was enabled we went in subscribed the system

  • 19:04

to the Dell epic catalog put the Dell updates into SCCM deployed out the open

  • 19:10

manage client so the instructions back and verify that everything watch is

  • 19:14

expected and we can now create software update groups that contain both

  • 19:19

Microsoft and Dell patches on behalf of Dell Technologies. Thank you for taking

  • 19:24

time to work with us today if you have any questions please feel free to leave

  • 19:28

a comment in the section below you can also go online to www.dell.com\comment.

  • 19:35

For more information about the dell client command suite and also for

  • 19:39

documentation related to the dell command update catalog thanks everybody

  • 19:43

    and have a great day.
